TIM HUGHES // Worship Central & Gas Street Church

Tim leads Worship Central, and has also, along with his wife Rachel, recently pioneered a new church in the city of Birmingham: St Luke’s Gas Street. Tim has written many songs including Here I Am to Worship, Happy Day, The Way and Hope and Glory.

KEYNOTE // ShineJesus says that we are the light of the world, but for many of us we hold back and struggle to step into the enormity of that call on and in our lives. We are called to be a people who shine bringing light and life wherever we go!

WORKSHOP // Encounter CultureWhat are we seeking to achieve in our gatherings; a great experience or an encounter with God? In this session we will look at what it means to develop a culture of expectation and dependency on the leading of the Holy Spirit. Can we pursue both excellence and risk? How do we encourage our musicians and singers to step out in freedom? How can we encourage our congregations beyond simply singing songs? For those wanting to step out of the boat when it comes to leading worship, this is for you.

BEN FIELDING // Hillsong Worship

Ben is the Worship Pastor at Hillsong Church in Australia. Songs he penned include Mighty to Save, Stronger, This I Believe, God is Able, Anchor, and more. He lives in Sydney with his wife Karalee and sons Harper and Leopold.

WORKSHOP // Worship Leading: Obedience & LeadershipWorship leaders need to steward the responsibility to lead but also continue to be led and never lose the wonder of the greatness of God that continues to compel us back to the place of worship. This practical workshop explores the importance of planning a musical journey and removing the distractions in our church services.

WORKSHOP // Journey of a SongwriterWhat makes a song work in church? What songs do we need to be writing? This workshop will explore the attributes of congregational songs and provide insight into the song writing process, including co-writing and re-writing.

KIM WALKER-SMITH // Jesus Culture

Kim has quickly become one of the strongest voices in worship music. She is a passionate worship leader with an anointing to bring an entire generation into an encounter with God. Her heart is to see people transformed by experiencing God’s love and for this generation to see themselves the way God sees them. Kim has been a part of Jesus Culture since the beginning of the ministry and now serves as president of the Jesus Culture Music label. Kim is married to Skyler Smith and together they have two sons, Wyatt and Bear.

WORKSHOP // Worshipping in the Difficult/Dry SeasonsWe all go through difficult seasons: times where our faith and trust in Jesus are challenged and times when we feel dry and burnt out. In this workshop Kim will discuss how to care for our hearts in this time, how to surrender to the season the Lord has us in, and most importantly, how to keep worshipping in the midst of it all.

WORKSHOP // Igniting Passion in Our Own Hearts for Worship1 John 4:19 says “We love because He first loved us”. In this workshop Kim will discuss connecting our hearts to Jesus, allowing His love to change us, and how our own encounters with His love directly alter and ignite our worship of Him.

SPEAKERS

10 11

DARRELL JOHNSON // Carey Theological College

Darrell Johnson has been preaching the Gospel since 1970 and is known as a lover of Jesus and His Good News. He has served as Senior Pastor of a number of Presbyterian churches in California, and of Union Church of Manila during the so-called “People Power Revolution.” In the fall of 2000 he accepted an appointment to the faculty of Regent College, where he taught preaching, worship, pastoral theology and Biblical spirituality. In September 2009 he accepted the call of the historic First Baptist Church in downtown Vancouver, serving as Senior Minister for 6½ years. Granted an Honourary Doctorate of Divinity from Carey Theological College in early 2015, Darrell accepted the invitation to be the Director of the new Centre for Preaching at Carey Theological Institute where he is now helping preachers find their “own voice” for announcing the amazingly good news of the Trinity. He and his wife Sharon have been married 44 years and have raised four children adopted from four different countries.

KEYNOTE // He Did Not ConsiderThis session will focus on the exposition of the text in Philippians 2:5-11, which Professor Johnson considers to be the theological centre of the Bible.

JASON BALLARD // Alpha Canada

Jason is one of the hosts of the Alpha Youth Film Series and works with Alpha Canada to build resources that serve the local church. He is also a pastor at his home church, Christian Life Assembly. Jason lives in Langley, British Columbia with his wife Rachael and his two kids, Hudson (3) and Mary (1). He loves preaching about Jesus, eating chocolate chip cookies and posting pictures of his kids on Instagram. To find out more about him, find him on Instagram: @jasonaballard

KEYNOTE // Intimacy and IdentityKnowing our identity in Jesus is the only way we can curb our propensity towards comparison, performance and shame. These things can creep into our hearts and prevent us from the service we are called to, and the full life we are invited into. How do we cultivate the kind of intimacy with God that causes us to live from the identity we have in Him? The classic spiritual disciplines, marked by moments of silence and solitude with God, feel unattainable when we have a hundred things fighting for our attention in a very busy world. We must follow the path to intimacy with the Almighty so that we do not become a people wide in influence yet shallow in character and faith.

DAVID TRIVIÑO // Worship Central Ecuador

Originally from Esmeraldas, Ecuador, David has served as the Worship Director for Iglesia Rey de Reyes (King of Kings Church) under the direction of Pastor Claudio Freidzon, as well as the Musical Director for Instituto Canzion (Canzion Institute of Music), both in Buenos Aires, Argentina. David and his wife Jacqueline Payne are blessed with two children, their son Shiloh and daughter Zoie. During their time in Canada, David served as Associate Pastor for Restoration Church in Vancouver and has had the privilege of collaborating with the LCN (Latin Christian Network) based out of Toronto. Currently David and his wife are the founders of Ecuador Adora Jesús (Ecuador Worships Jesus) a worship movement whose sole purpose is to unite denominations, cultures and generations under one name — Jesus Christ.

WORKSHOP // Worship That Heals the EarthWhat is worship that heals the earth? In Psalm 24:7 as it says WE are the doors of healing for the earth. David will discuss how we can live a practical life of worship through personal worship (our intimate relationship with God), family worship (we are the hosts of the presence of God), and public worship (the manifestation of our relationship with God). The result of all of the above would usher in the reconciliation of individuals, families, and ultimately the nations with Jesus Christ.

ERIC DAMEWOOD // Village Church

Eric is the Pastor of Worship Arts at Village Church in the Lower Mainland. Originally from Colorado, he trained and worked there as a composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist. In 2009, he moved to NYC to work on a Master of Theology and later accepted a full-time position leading worship at Apostles Church. Since then he has passionately led and developed a vision to shape other people’s lives-of-worship through music and art. Eric and his wife, Whitney, have been married since 2006. They have two daughters, Odette and baby Daphne.

WORKSHOP // Casting a Vision Your Worship Team Can OwnJon didn’t practice this week. Mary forgot her harmonies. The church looks like a sea of blank stares. These, and countless others, are the challenges Worship Leaders face every day. The solution is to cast a better vision that your team and your church can truly buy into. This workshop will help you establish or strengthen the vision for worship ministry in your church. Topics include: how to build an unbreakable culture, how to get 100% commitment from team members, how to better partner with your Senior Pastor, how to most effectively communicate with your team, and how to inspire your church no matter the size.

12 13

ANDREA YEUNG // Tenth Church

Andrea is the Pastor of Healing Ministries at Tenth Church, and is a Therapist working in both private practice and community services. She has been a Worship Leader and Vocal Coach for over 10 years. Andrea has been involved with Worship Central Canada since its inception. She has helped pioneer programs to equip the church in Vancouver through music and leadership, and has run multiple vocal workshops in Western Canada. Andrea is passionate about empowering individuals to encounter God through worship and to learn to use their voices with both freedom and skill. Her diverse stylistic background allows her to excel in multiple music genres, moving with fluidity between them. She loves opportunities to teach others to learn to do the same.

WORKSHOP // Advanced Vocal TechniqueHave you ever wished for more flexibility in your voice? Sometimes our worship leading can be limited by the extent of our vocal skill-set. Come and learn different techniques to free your range and sing with more strength. This workshop will explore how to create flexibility in tone quality, experiment with vocal plasticity, and how to actively work on increasing versatility in our range. Each of us has a unique voice, and the ability to develop it. Join Andrea to learn practical strategies to improve the way you sing, and to enrich how you experience your voice.

JAMES FAM // Coastal Church

James Fam joined the ministry team at Coastal Church after leaving a successful career as a professional engineer working at Translink. He completed his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and Master’s degree at UBC, and has been active in worship and student ministries for almost two decades. James currently serves in an executive pastoral role by overseeing operations and development of all multisite campuses, special events and small group ministry. He is also passionate about his family: his wife, Michelle, and his two young girls.

WORKSHOP // Leadership Succession: Is There Life After You Give Up The Mic?Let’s face it, many of us live to serve God by leading on the stage, and the better we are at it the more difficult it can be to give up the mic. Having a healthy vision for leadership development will ensure successful transitions, and it’s never too early to prepare for the passing of the leadership baton to the next generation. Learn to avoid some of the common leadership pitfalls and how to best position yourself for God’s promotion so that you can make the best impact for His Kingdom in every season.

JON VELASQUEZ // Jon Vez Audio

Starting as a musician at a young age, Jon began learning about worship and what it meant to work as a team. As he progressed into studying audio and production, he now utilizes all these tools to bring mixes to life in the live worship scenario or studio.

WORKSHOP // Advanced Audio EngineeringThis workshop will focus on advanced compression techniques (such as parallel compression and multi-band compression) and FX (reverb types and uses, and delay times and how to use them). We will be building on the two previous sessions Jon ran last year, one at Worship Central Conference 2015, and another for Training Day early 2016 (brief recap provided). There will be interactive time for Q/A throughout.

JONATHAN MITCHELL // Chapel Vancouver

Jonathan is the founder of Chapel, a movement committed to uniting the Church and kindling faith in the youth and youth leaders in the Lower Mainland. He oversees multiple chapters of Chapel in various regions, ensuring the mission stays true and the network continues to knit more and more leaders into the fold. Jonathan also serves as the Student Ministries Director at Every Nation Vancouver.

WORKSHOP // Worship in the Youth Context: Wielding the Double Edged Sword of ExperienceThe stakes are as high as they’ve ever been in the area of performance for leaders tasked with leading this next generation in worship. Teenagers today were born into a world where everything is competing for their attention in increasingly interactive ways. Worship leaders for youth may often feel like a YouTube ad with 5 seconds attention span before they click skip. Countless testimonies credit watermark moments of engaging with Jesus in an immersive worship experience as turning points in their faith. So what does it look like to create a space that sees Jesus lifted high rather than the space itself? In this workshop we’ll be exploring how scripture provides a powerful lens that we can look through to help us balance these tensions.

14 15

VANIA LEVANS // Regent College

Vania is a pastor, teacher, musician, and spiritual director. She is a Faculty Associate at Regent College, and was their Worship and Music Coordinator from 2011-2014. She most recently served as a Neighbourhood Co-Pastor at Artisan Church, Vancouver, BC. She earned her Master of Divinity at Regent in 2006 and her Bachelor of Church Music at Canadian Bible College in Regina, Saskatchewan. Vania is passionate about encouraging and nurturing sanctification — the life-long process of maturing in Christ — and sharing the good news of Christ with others. One of the items of corporate worship she continues to study and teach is how to lead Christ-centered corporate worship so that it better reflects the diversity and beauty of the body of Christ.

WORKSHOP // Sending Out God’s PeopleThis workshop will begin with a focus on the Abrahamic blessing from Genesis 12, and will explore some of the practical ramifications of what it means for the people of God to be a blessing in the world. It will discuss corporate worship, and explain that one of the primary aims of a worship service is to send the people of God out, empowered and equipped to join God in His work. It will end with a short teaching on benedictions, and then provide an opportunity for workshop participants to write a benediction after listening to a brief, seven-minute talk.

JON BULLER // Vernon Alliance Church

Jon Buller is Pastor of Worship and the Arts at Vernon Alliance Church, and the founder of the LEVITE SUMMIT, an annual worship arts equipping conference in Kelowna, BC. He is also a Juno-nominated recording artist, who loves to lead people in musical worship experiences.

WORKSHOP // Exploring Prophetic WorshipIn this workshop Jon will explore the Old Testament roots of prophetic worship, and a New Testament theology for a sometimes misunderstood idea of what it means to be prophetic through music in our day.

COURSE

The Worship Central Course is one of the major ideas we’ve poured all our efforts into developing. The course looks at the theological and practical issues around leading worship: including topics such as the role and importance of worship, leadership and team dynamics, and releasing creativity. Since its launch, over 4000 courses have run in more than 100 countries. Best of all: it’s free, with all seven sessions filmed and talk transcripts available online. Our hope is that through the course your worship team will grow in learning what it means to give, to serve and to worship.

Register for your course today at worshipcentral.org

TEAM DISCUSSION

We encourage you to spend some time with your team during the dinner break and debrief about what God is speaking to you today, both personally and as a group. Below are some questions to guide your discussion, but feel free to converse where God leads you.

Q: WHAT IS A KEY IDEA FROM THIS CONFERENCE THAT REALLY IMPACTED YOU TODAY? // HOW DOES THAT IMPACT YOU IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE AS A WORSHIPPER OR LEADER?

Q: WHAT IS THE VISION AND MISSION OF YOUR WORSHIP TEAM? // HOW CAN YOU BE MORE MISSIONAL IN THE WAY YOU WORSHIP, AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS A TEAM?
