About IAME & The ConferenceThe Interna onal Associa on of Mari me Economists – IAME was founded in 1992. What ini ally started out as a small venture has since then developed into a prominent academic society of scholars interested in mari me economics, including ports, shipping and hinterland transport. IAME currently has a membership of over 300 individual members from all around the world and more than 10 corporate members, making the associa on a truly interna onal one.
IAME’s aim is to promote and facilitate the dynamic exchange of knowledge, research, informa on and experience on economic issues with respect to the mari me sector among academics, professionals and policy makers. And the means to do that is the main event for the Associa on; its Annual Conference that brings together researchers and professionals from all over the world. Greeti ngs from the Conference Chair
Dear IAME 2019 Conference par cipants,It is with great pleasure and honour to welcome you to the 27th Annual Conference of the Interna onal Associa on of Mari me Economists (IAME), hosted by Athens University of Economics and Business, and organized by the Laboratory for Interna onal Shipping, Finance and Management and the MSc program with the same name. From the outset, the Conference has been put under the auspices of H.E., the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Prokopios Pavlopoulos. As a country that is renowned for its strong mari me industry, Greece can be considered as a “natural” choice for hos ng this pres gious conference. It is the largest ship-owning na on in tonnage terms and a major world Mari me Centre. More than 700 shipping companies are located in A ca, with satellite companies following and serving them, including ship-brokerage, insurance, banks, law, classifi ca on socie es and other mari me sector-related companies; it is es mated that around 200,000 people are employed by the Greek shipping industry. The entrepreneurial philosophy of Greek shipowners, their strategic planning and investment prac ces, their a tude to cost-eff ec veness, crew management and social responsibility, have proved, among others, prudent strategies that have helped them maintain a strong global mari me industry, and at the same me allowed them to survive during the diffi cult mes of mari me cycles. The IAME2019 Conference aims to provide an interna onal forum to academics, researchers and industry prac oners for discussion, exchange of ideas, networking and collabora on on cri cal issues and developments related to mari me transporta on worldwide. During the Conference, plenary sessions with prac oners and policy makers are organized, covering areas such as ‘Mari me regula on and policy issues’ and ‘Shipping fi nance and its prac ces’. Nine (9) special sessions are being organized by academic colleagues during the Conference, focusing in key areas of concern to the industry, such as ‘digital transforma on in shipping’, ‘sustainable shipping’, ‘shipping markets’, ‘shipping fi nance and investments’ and others. Six (6) pres gious shipping related academic journals are publishing special volumes, with papers presented in the conference. Nine (9) research awards are off ered by academic journals, academic ins tu ons, research ins tutes and postgraduate academic programs, aiming to encourage excellence in research in the areas of mari me economics and business. More than 250 academic papers and extended abstracts will fi nally be presented in the conference, with more than 300 authors from 48 countries around the world joining IAME2019. Moreover, at least 100 prac oners will par cipate in the various events of the conference during its four day ac vi es. As hosts of IAME2019 in Greece, it is considered essen al that delegates experience not only a high-quality conference but also the country itself – its history, culture, people, landscape, gastronomy, entertainment and hospitality. Thus, apart from the academic-scien fi c part of the program, a number of cultural and social ac vi es are organized, aiming to provide a unique experience for par cipants. These include events at Aikaterini Laskaridis Founda on and Mari me Museum, Onassis founda on, Acropolis Museum, Yacht club of Greece, and Hellas Liberty Ship Museum. In order to put together such a seamless, rich academic and social-cultural program, in less than one year a er given the opportunity to organize IAME conference in Athens, it was necessary to obtain sponsorships. I feel grateful to shipping companies, banks, clubs, founda ons and academic programs that have generously provided assistance and support for the conference. It allowed us to organize events in pres gious venues around Athens and Piraeus, to present academic-research excellence prizes, but also the opportunity to off er substan ally lower conference fees for PhD student presenters and par cipants, with the aim to help the young mari me academic community to enhance their research experience through presenta ons and par cipa on in the conference. Special thanks are due to the local organizing commi ee, the interna onal scien fi c commi ee and fi nally to the secretariat team for their me, in helping in the various tasks of conference organiza on. I hope that IAME 2019 Conference will let you sa sfi ed and that along with the cultural ac vity program enriching, conference delegates will be able to me travel from modern to ancient Greece to discover, contemplate, be inspired and create wonderful memories.

Athens University of Economics and Business is known for excellence in the subject areas of its focus. For the past years, one such area of focus for us is mari me economics, business and fi nance. The reason is simple: Greece is, and has always been, a mari me based economy. Our people’s es to the sea go back millennia, have remained unbroken since, and one
can reasonably expect, based on past experience, that the future will hold even more such es. However, the strength of the Greek mari me industry, now more than ever, depends not only on our na on’s signifi cant past experience with the sea, but more importantly on the systema c study of the discipline, with mari me economics, business and fi nance playing a pivotal role, in order for the industry to cope with modern challenges and exploit new opportuni es. As the discipline of mari me studies has gained in breadth and scope over the past decades, Athens University of Economics and Business has stood at the forefront of educa on on mari me economics, fi nance and management in Greece, but also interna onally. Our reputa on as a leading University in Economics and Management in Greece, with high caliber teaching and research members of academic staff in the fi eld of mari me fi nance, management and economics and our highly esteemed “MSc in Interna onal Shipping, Finance and Management” program have a racted a number of highly qualifi ed students from both Greece and abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, Dis nguished guests of the 27th Annual IAME Conference,It is a great honor for our city the holding of this event, as it places Athens at the center of the global mari me audience, and presents the global mari me academic and business communi es a unique opportunity to interact with the Greek Shipping Community, sharing knowledge and expanding the horizons of coopera on.Athens is transforming its self and its role in the broader area, becoming one of the most important European metropolises. The mari me industry has always been a vital ally to our city’s prosperity and growth. The last few years, Athens is enjoying remarkable benefi ts in its tourism, that derive not only by our targeted strategy and successful co-opera ons with the private sector, but also because of, the transforma on of our city’s closest port, Piraeus, the investments made in Athens by the hotel industry, the Athens Airport mul plied connec ons and services, and of course and the investments in cruise tourism and the mari me industry in general, made by your sector. I strongly believe that all the above developments combined, present unique opportuni es for the local economy growth and the introduc on of new jobs that will aff ect posi vely the city’s capabili es. Our city, now more than ever before, can be established as the most prominent tourism des na on and commercial connec on center providing state of the art transporta on connec ons and swi services, thus maximizing its compara ve advantages as the capital city of the most important port in the Mediterranean, Piraeus. To achieve that, the mari me and the eco systems that operate around, including the new tech economy and fi nance sectors, needs to fi nd groundbreaking ways to further exploit such opportuni es that arise for Athens. To that direc on, your contribu on in the research and promo on of innova ve solu ons that meet the needs of todays economy across the sum of areas that are aff ected by the Mari me sector is invaluable.I am wishing you a great Conference!

It was Onassis’ appointment as Greek Vice-Consul in Buenos Aires in 1931 that sparked his interest in shipping. A man in perpetual mo on who divided his life between Paris, Buenos Aires, Monte Carlo and Montevideo, Onassis fi nally se led down in 1942 in New York, where his shipping business would be based. Later, in 1952, he set up Olympic Mari me in Paris to manage his shipping assets from Europe.
In 1953, Olympic transferred its offi ces to Monte Carlo, where it remained un l 1977. In 1990, Olympic Mari me was renamed Olympic Shipping and Management SA.
The company has now assigned the technical management of its tanker fl eet to Springfi eld Shipping Co. Panama SA, while Olympic Vision Mari me Inc. manages its dry bulk fl eet. Today, the fl eet comprises 32 vessels. In accordance with Aristotle Onassis’ will, the Onassis Founda on was established in 1975 in two parts, one dealing with Business the other with Public Benefi t.
The Business Founda on operates primarily in shipping and investments, and every year forwards 40% of its net annual profi ts to the Public Benefi t Founda on to fi nance projects and ini a ves to the benefi t of Health, Culture, Educa on and Cultural Diplomacy in Greece. This model is unique but effi cient: by unifying and capitalizing the eff ort, work, thought, knowledge and ac vi es of the Business Founda on, the benefi ts can ul mately be spread across society in the form of services, support and inspira on.
From Shipping to Public Benefi t
What started out as a struggle against the elements on the seven seas should return to Greece as social benefi t.
This was the vision of Aristotle Onassis as he expressed it in his will.

Under the generous sponsorship of the Interna onal Propeller Club of the United States, in the evening of Friday, June 28th, a er the Closing Ceremony of the Conference, IAME2019 delegates and guests will enjoy an on-board cocktail recep on at the renovated historical ship-museum “Hellas Liberty”, one of the three remaining Liberty ships in the world. These were ships build en-mass by USA to deliver supplies to destroyed Europe during World War II. The Greek shipping industry is alleged to have based its resur-rec on a er W.W.II, on 100 of these ships bought in favorable terms from the USA government.
The symbolic name of “Liberty” was given to a class of cargo ship of about 10,000 tons which was orig-inally conceived in Great Britain and massively produced in the United States in order to cover the in-creased transporta on needs of the Allied forces, following the enormous losses caused by enemy ac- on. Over 2,720 of these ships were built in the U.S. over the course of four years. A produc on rate that
could not be matched even with today’s advanced technology.
SS Hellas Liberty is Liberty class ship launched in 1943 by ST. John’s River Shipbuilding Company. She was converted into a pipe carrier in 1944 and used in the construc on of a fuel pipeline under the English Channel following the Normandy landing. A er the war she was laid up. She was chartered by AT&T in 1956 and converted into a cable ship. In 1957 she was transferred to the US reserve fl eet un l 1964. Lat-er she was classifi ed as a barge and again laid up at the James River in 1983. A er that many components including the rudder were removed and used as spare parts for the SS “JOHN W. BROWN”.
Today only three Liberty ships survive: two in the U.S. and the SS HELLAS LIBERTY in Piraeus.
