v v CK Preface Welcome to the MINE 2009 Conference Proceedings! The publication of the Conference Proceedings marks the culmination of a long process involving conference planning, vetting of presentation proposals and, finally, the preparation of the Proceedings. The world economy is facing serious challenges in sustaining the strong development of the last few years. Reduced economic activity of 2008-09 is being symbolized by some experts as an economic downturn for diverse stakeholders in mineral and energy sector. They are skeptical about the impact of this economic scenario and its far-reaching consequences on the performance of the mineral sector. Increasingly, it has been felt by a few scholars in mineral world that the knowledge of new economic spirit can provide the competitive edge to Mineral Sector. The main objective of MINE 2009 is to provide a platform to diverse stakeholders like practitioners, academics, specialists, government of mineral industry to discuss the collaboration, communication and innovative spirit of the new economy and its emphasis on the development of intelligent workforce to understand the essence of its outlook that treats knowledge as the main source of value creation. Technology, as an enabler continues to play a vital role to integrate all the entities in the organization to address the market demand. The Conference will definitely provide an exceptional learning experience for all and meet its primary goals: to enrich the existing domain, to encourage inter-organizational participation and knowledge exchange, and to contribute to critical debates within the broader community. The conference explores the network capabilities of the New Economy to reengineer and bring radical changes in the emerging organizational culture. Technology, as an enabler continues to play a vital role to integrate all the entities in the organization to address the market demand and sustain competitive advantage. The proceedings presented here contain significant thoughts on the new economy related topics. The papers will guide and stimulate readers toward adding to the body of knowledge with regard to technology, learning, and performance. Much of the works of authors carried out behind the scenes often go unacknowledged; the main purpose of the proceedings is to bring all the knowledge out for the benefit of the industry. We are especially grateful to the conference technical committee for that. The most difficult tasks in any refereed process are that of reviewers. The reviewers for MINE 2009 were very conscientious and did excellent work…for that, a most heartfelt thanks!
