1 CONTENTS AND AIMS
A river is not merely a riverbed but a whole watershed system. It is, indeed, a complex
system formed by many geomorphological and demographical elements which in turn
keep a delicate equilibrium with each other. Hence the necessary multidisciplinary nature
of any teamwork intervening in such complex scenarios. Such cross-functional team
works comprise practitioners with different expertise areas and approaches but all
working together and keeping in mind the population who live in and by the river system.
Nowadays, there is a sound conviction all over Europe about recovering a good
ecological state of our rivers. This implies not only restoring water quality but also river
morphology and a river functioning compatible with both fluvial ecosystems (flora and
fauna) development and flood risk control activities. In the end, the fluvial space
restoration is proposed and for suitably embrace that aim it is clearly essential a close
collaboration with the river system inhabitants who originate and suffer the
consequences of such river system space occupation.
Along with the morphological, hydrological and ecological restoration, the need for emphasizing the social restoration is gaining strength and this
means to achieve the ordinary citizen involvement with the fluvial system and, in doing so, allowing the citizenship to better understand the fluvial
system functioning and to actively participate in both the management and the decision making processes. This is why it is so crucial working both at
a cultural level and at a social awareness level. Furthermore, a empowering people strategy is a process as complex as the very river system and it
necessarily engages knowing the river needs, raising awareness about the river identity and knowing its evolution throughout history.
In the course of the 2016, the AEIP and the EFIB have carried out a series of activities framed in the Donosti2016 European Cultural Capital schedule
with the fluvial bioengineering playing a leading role. As a key outcome, both organizations have made a joint effort in the International Soil
Bioengineering Conference organization which will be held on November 2016

The conference will have a duration of three days. The first day will be dedicated to the water and the river. Watershed management, fluvial
restoration and fluvial intervention in urban environments will be the central issues of the event and the most relevant works and interventions
related to the former fields will be presented.
. In the second day, other bioengineering works not limited to fluvial scenarios will be presented. Finally, during the third day, there will be a visit to
Urumea river watershed. Particularly, the fluvial bioengineering works built throughout the Donosti 2016 Cultural European Capital bioengineering
workshops will be visited and in situ analyses of the outcome of such interventions (Goizueta, Astigarraga and Hernani) will be carried out.
Furthermore, the conference will also be a suitable platform to analyse projects related to other sectors connected to soil and water bioengineering
such as landscape ecology and ecological restoration.
The 11th AEIP conference coincides with the 10th EFIB conference and the 20th EFIB anniversary.

2- SPEAKERS, PARTICIPANTS AND THEMATIC AREAS
A scientific committee comprising National and European practitioners specialised in different expertise areas will be in charge of selecting both
the invited speakers and sixteen oral communications that will be presented in the 11th AEIP conference.
The conference invited speakers will be European experts with a sound background in using bioengineering techniques at different scales. Some of
them have already confirmed their participation. Other well represented group will include Spanish specialists who have remarkably contributed to
the development of soil and water bioengineering techniques in Spain and whose communications and works have been essential motivations within
the sector over the last 20 years.
It has been 20 years since the EFIB foundation in Vienna. We would like to celebrate this anniversary along with the most prominent professionals of the
Federation such as:
• Florin Florineth (Vienna University, BOKU) with more than 30 years in both academic and project elaboration and implementation background.
He will give the perfect finale to the conference by giving a bioengineering workshop in San Sebastian.
• Eva Hacker, president of the Gesellschaft für Ingenieurbiologie (Germany) and professor in the University of Hannover.
• Giuliano Sauli, president of the AIPIN (Italian Association of Soil Bioengineering).
• Paolo Cornelini, AIPIN vice-president, he has a broad academic and project elaboration background. He participated in the Astigarraga
bioengineering workshop.
• Bernard Lachat, Hydraulic engineer, biologist and Swiss fluvial restoration specialist.
• Giovani de Cesare. Hydraulic engineer. President of the Verein für Ingenieurbiologie (Swiss Bioengineering Association).
• Rolf Johansen (Ehrfurt University). He is author of different linear infrastructure restoration works in Germany (roadways and highways).
• Giola Gibell. She is an architect and landscape designer. President of the Italian Assosiation of Landscape Ecology.
• Freddy Rey. Forestry engineer (IRSTEA), President of Agebio (French Bioengineering Association).
• Carlo Bifulco. President of APENA (Portuguese Landscape Engineering Association).
• Anita Drexel. Head of the Bioengineering Institute in BOKU (Vienna).
