Monday – Catechesis

Catechesis Reimagined for a New Generation by Fr. Dave Dwyer, CSPPanel of Writers Presenting Their White Papers: Studying Catechetical ProcessesPanelists will be addressing White Papers submitted on the topic: ….. Based on your experience and setting, describe a renewed vision, a mission, and the essential components of a catechetical process that can equip and inspire those who are attending to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

Father Dave Dwyer, CSP, is Executive Director of Busted Halo®, the Paulist Fathers’ ministry and media outreach to Catholics in their twenties and thirties.

Tuesday – Care of God’s Creation- Catholic Social TeachingResponding to the Cry of the Poor and the Cry of the Earth: The Essential Role of Catholic Social Traditions in Faith Formation. by Joan RosenhauerCaring for those in need has been a part of the Christian tradition since its inception. It’s as ancient as the Old Testament call to care for widows, orphans and aliens, as compelling as Christ’s command to love our neighbor as ourselves and as current as Pope Francis’ new encyclical, Laudato Si. It can also be a life-giving and unifying experience for our faith communities, especially for young people who bring exceptional passion and hope to this mission. Understanding the foundational principle of Human Dignity and all of the themes of Catholic social teaching that flow from it can equip Catholics to bring their faith into

Wednesday – Intercultural Focus Do You See What I See?: Intercultural Lenses for Catechesis and Leadership by Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSPIn our quest to balance unity and diversity between and among all cultural groups, more recent tools have emerged from the area of intercultural competence. This presentation will consider some of the cultural lenses that could be applied to catechetical training and leadership. Topics of interests will include: parameters for interacting with other cultural groups; leadership styles for intercultural ministry; and the promotion of ecclesial integration and inclusion.

Rev. Ricky Manalo, CSP, Ph.D. is a Paulist priest and a liturgical composer, currently teaching at Santa Clara University. He also serves as the main facilitator of the Cultural Orientation Program for International Ministers/Priests (COPIM) of Loyola Marymount University.

Thursday – Evangelization

Learning to Fish by Bishop Michael J. ByrnesMost of our experience in pastoral ministry centers around the dynamics of shepherding. After all, that’s what “pastoral” means. We know how to care for our flock through teaching, service, sacraments, and the like. At the same time, we are all coming to embrace the reality that evangelization also needs to be part of our ministry. But for that, Jesus used a different image, fishing. Even a less than rank amateur fisherman like me knows that fishing requires a different set of assumptions, attitudes, and skills than shepherding. So, we’ll take a look at some of those things. In the end, it will be my hope that we can all come to the key conviction that any evangelist/fisherman needs: “Knowing Jesus is the best gift that any person can receive; that we have encountered Him is the best thing that has happened in our lives, and making him known by our word and deeds is our joy.” (Aparecida, 29)

Bishop Michael J Byrnes, Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit

everything they do. In light of our understanding of the intrinsic dignity of every person, our Holy Father has challenged us to seek an authentic and deep meeting with the other, as he has modeled so often, and to recognize the integral nature of our relationships with each other and with all of creation. Pope Francis reminds us that there are members of the global community across the U.S. and around the world who are suffering from poverty, violence and the impact of environmental degradation. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, it is all the more important to help Catholics of all ages appreciate the rich tradition that informs our response to our brothers and sisters in need and to God’s gift of creation. By encouraging the Catholic community to bring this teaching to life, catechetical leaders can help Catholics renew and enrich their faith as true disciples of Christ.

Joan Rosenhauer, Executive Vice President, U.S. Operations, Catholic Relief Services

Daily Capstone Presenter Sr. Maureen Sullivan, O.P.

Sr. Maureen Sullivan, O.P. is a Dominican Sister of Hope from New York. She received her M.A. in Theology from Manhattan College in the Bronx and her Ph.D. from Fordham University, also in the Bronx. She is Professor Emerita of Theology at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire.

The National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL) is attended by:• academics • evangelization leaders• adult faith formation directors • parish catechetical leaders• corporate & publishing partners • students• diocesan directors and staff • youth ministers

When you tweet about the conference, don't forget to use #NCCL2016.

NCCL415 Michigan Ave Suite #110Washington, DC 20017www.nccl.org

Dear Colleagues in Ministry:

As members or affiliates of the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL) you know the importance of our annual meeting. Apart from the opportunity for prayer, rejuvenation, and formation, our gathering will provide us with the best opportunity to come together as catechetical professionals for networking. We are the nation's experts (diocesan, parish, academics, and resource providers) on evangelization and what makes NCCL an extraordinary organization is that it brings together the full complement of ministry collaborators.

We are ramping-up for May's annual meeting and so I want to share with you how this conference will be unique. The theme for our gathering is "Dynamic Discipleship: dare. lead. innovate." The planning concept is based on the Second Vatican Council wherein the Church embraced an aggiornamento moment. The Church fathers gathered daily for prayer and relevant presentations that were followed by significant time discussing the implications for ministry in various venues and forums. Our upcoming conference will emulate this spirit.

The Conference will feature:- General session prayer and keynotes- Daily Mass and an interfaith prayer opportunity- Learning and networking sessions- Forum and Committee gatherings- Membership meetings- Sponsored meals and receptions- A daily theological/pastoral capstone presentation- Access to experts, vendors, and colleagues- And, YOUR contributions as a catechetical ministry professional

One particular element that we will integrate this year is our new Living Room Innovation Area. This space provides us with various kinds of gathering areas (informal to semi-formal) wherein committees, forums, showcases, conversations, and brainstorming can occur. In fact, we plan to schedule a brief time or two for each NCCL Committee or workgroup to meet there to interact with members and to discuss the work each does on behalf of the organization. The Living Room Innovation Area replaces the NCCL Booth and underscores that the primary benefit of NCCL is its ability to facilitate relationship-based networking among catechetical professionals. If you chair one of our committees or task-groups, please contact our conference planner to schedule a timeslot. Others may also want to use the space for province meetings or conversation. Should your network desire a more private meeting location, please review the Master Schedule for available meeting room space and times. This is available on a first come/first serve basis, and final requests are due by February 28. Please contact Ms. Terry Wessels, our conference planner, via email at: [email protected].

When we gather for NCCL 2016 we will be in the place where Catholicism's first entered our nation some 450 years ago (Diocese of Saint Augustine – Jacksonville, FL). Just as it was a kairos moment for Church's discipleship-making almost five centuries ago, we expect that NCCL 2016 will be a clarion call for all of who endeavor as evangelizers of this millennium. Dynamic Discipleship: dare. lead. Innovate.

On behalf of the entire organization, we look forward to you joining us!

Sincerely, Dennis L. Johnson, Jr. Secretary for Laity, Family, and Life Secretario de Laicado, Familia, y Vida [email protected]
