Renewable Futures and Green Energy Awards 2018

Renewable Futures: The next wave of the energy transition

09.00 Registration, exhibition and networking

09.30 Chair’s introduction: Merlin Hyman, chief executive officer, Regen

09.40 Energy leader interview: Cathy McClay, head of future markets, National Grid System Operator

10.10 On the cusp of the next wave of the energy transition?

Seismic technological shifts are transforming the energy system. Billions of pounds are being invested in renewables, storage, electric cars and smart systems.

However, ten years after the Climate Change Act, the recent International Panel on Climate Change report is a sobering reminder of the scale and urgency of the challenge. With the UK considering a ‘net-zero’ target: where will policy focus, what impact will the ambition of cities and localities have and what will these policies mean for the next wave of energy investments and business models.

Speakers include: Katie Black, director of policy, National Infrastructure Commission Johnny Gowdy, director, Regen

11.00 Break and networking

11.30 Discussion session: Emerging disruptive business models

A complex and rapidly changing energy system creates opportunities for disruptors and innovators. This session brings together leaders at the cutting edge of disruptive innovation looking at flexibility, EVs and smart systems to debate what are the next wave of business models that will capture value?

Speakers include: Toby Ferenczi, director of strategy, Ovo Ed Simpson, partner, Downing Erik Nygard chief executive officer, Limejump Clem Cowton, director of external affairs, Octopus

12.10 Capturing value in a smart and flexible system

This session will hear from businesses playing a leading role in developing solar, storage and EV charging projects on what models are investable and the practical challenges they face to develop and deliver projects.

Speakers include: Bridgit Hartland-Johnson, lead origination and investment manager – solar and storage, Ørsted Matt Allen chief executive officer, Pivot Power Marek Kubik, market director, Fluence

13.10 Lunch and networking

14.30 Energy leader interview

Ben Watts, innovation and solutions director, Engie

15.00 Rethinking the energy system

Focusing on individual technologies is no longer enough, the scale of technological change requires addressing heat, transport and power and thinking about the whole system from the bottom up. The role of national and distribution system operators and the development of local energy systems will be central to managing this complexity and to determining the business models that can capture value.

Speakers include: Stewart Reid, head of DSO and innovation, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Cathy McClay, head of future markets, National Grid System Operator Chris Clarke, energy strategy director, Wales and West Utilities Afsheen Kabir Rashid, co-founder and chief executive officer, Repowering London

16.00 Conference ends

18.00 Drinks reception followed by the Green Energy Awards

Dear colleague,

The energy system is undergoing system wide change at an unprecedented rate. Investments are shifting from traditional generation and supply models to flexible assets and strategies that can capture value in a volatile market.

The aim of this year’s Renewable Futures is to explore this next wave of the energy transition. We have brought together the leaders and disruptors shaking up the energy sector to discuss the emerging business models that will unlock value in a decentralised, decarbonised and digitalised energy system.

I hope you enjoy the day and leave feeling informed and inspired.
