Learner Support CentreOur Learner Support Centre provides information and advice on a range of issues including financial support.

Career choicesWe provide advice and information about a range of future career and study plans, whether you are applying to university, preparing for interviews or finding the right job. The team also works closely with Connexions advisers.

Connexions Personal Adviser If you are under 20 years of age, they can help you with support, information and advice about courses, money, jobs, housing problems, health and much more.

Juggling study and childcare We have nursery facilities for children of pre-school age. We also work in partnership with local nurseries, after school clubs and Ofsted registered childminders to help learners manage their childcare needs for their study time at College. We may also be able to help you meet the cost of this care.

The College also administers Care to Learn and free childcare for Training and Learning for Work schemes to support eligible learners.

Students’ Union Our local branch of the National Union of Students (NUS) represents student views on college issues. We also take an active role in organising student social events. The NUS membership card gives discounts at a wide range of shops and entertainment venues across London.

Funding your studyThere are no fees to pay if you are 16-18 and meet certain residency and immigration conditions. If you are 19 or over you will have to pay fees on most courses (you’ll find more information about the fees for UK and overseas learners on page 138 of this guide). If you do need help, however, you’ll find the staff in our Learner Support Centre very helpful. These key staff assess your individual circumstances and match you to any financial support that you are eligible for. You may be able to get help with course and exam fees, materials, equipment or childcare.

How it works Our ETS team works with you to provide flexible, customised training solutions to suit your particular business needs. We can deliver training throughout London and the Home Counties, either at your company’s premises or here at the College.

A member of our ETS team meets you to talk through your organisation’s needs. We will then develop a training plan for your organisation. For example:

Our teaching staff share a determination to make science an interesting and exciting subject for learners at all levels.

Science is for everyone with an interest in their immediate surroundings and the universe. We offer a range of vocational courses to suit your needs. They include vocational science pathways in forensic and medical science and access courses in biological science and engineering.

Many courses lead to university or employment. All full-time courses include key skills such as communications and information technology, which help to improve your performance in coursework and employment.

Science BTEC Introductory Certificate Level 1

Course code: IC1MSCN1

This course provides the basic knowledge for starting a career in science for people who have not studied before. It includes the study of life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes. You do a set of eight units with a test, assignments and experiments in each.

Requirements: You will need to pass a test when you come for interview. You will also needa referee to comment on your previous studies.

APPLIED SCIENCE

Applied Science BTEC First Diploma Level 2

Course code: FD2MAPS1

This course is designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification in science. You will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for employment or further study at Level 3.

Requirements: You will need at least four GCSE subjects achieved at grade D or higher.

APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENCE

Applied Medical Science BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MEDS1

This course is ideal if you want a career in the field of medical sciences. It is made up of 12 units for the certificate and 18 units for the diploma. Two of the units are set and marked by examiners. The others are marked by tutors and moderated by the examiners. The qualification is equivalent to two subjects at A Level.

This course is for those who are at the start of their careers and who need a broad vocational introduction to art and design. It aims to develop design skills including painting and drawing, contextual studies, sculpture, 3D graphics /digital imaging, time based media and key skills, textiles, sculpture and 3D design products, and a variety of 2D media.

Requirements: You will need three GCSEs at grade D or above including English, or a Level 1 vocational qualification plus a relevant Level 1 literacy qualification. You must show a strong interest in art and design and will need to provide visual evidence by either presenting a portfolio of work or completing a project set by the College at interview stage.

Art and Design (Art and Design Pathway) BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MArT1

This is a broad art and design course aimed to give you relevant vocational skills in a variety of art and design disciplines. You will study digital graphic design, fashion textiles, fine art and 3D during the first year.

In the second year you will be able to choose options from fine art, sculpture, product design, textiles, fashion and graphic design. These options will be linked to work placements and assignment briefs will be tailored to meet industry standards. After completing this course, most students progress to a specialist art and design related degree programme.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C including English or a Level 2 vocational qualification at merit level plus a relevant Level 2 literacy qualification. In this specialist course you will learn fashion-related industry skills. You will develop and build a strong portfolio which will cover pattern cutting, garment construction, design illustration and textiles. You will either progress to a junior industry role or to a specialist fashion related degree programme.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C including English or a Level 2 vocational qualification plus a relevant Level 2 literacy qualification. You must show a strong interest in art and design and will need to provide visual evidence by either presenting a portfolio of work or completing a project set by the College at interview stage.

Art and Design BTEC Foundation Diploma Level 3

This course is for those who intend to study a specialist art or design course at degree level. You will study graphic design, fashion textiles, fine art and 3D during the first term before specialising in the second term.

Requirements: You will need a Level 3 qualification or a strong art and design portfolio.

Music Technology BTEC First Diploma Level 2

Course code: FD2MMus4

This course provides an introduction to a specialist work-related programme of study focusing on music production and the music industry. You will study sequencing, live music recording, and soundtrack production for TV and film. This course covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in these areas.

Requirements: You will need three GCSEs at grade D or above including English, or a Level 1 vocational qualification plus a relevant Level 1 literacy qualification. Relevant experience in the field of study will be taken into consideration for adults returning to education.

Music Technology BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MMus4

This course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the areas of music technology and production. You will study advanced sequencing, sampling, live music recording including the use of a full recording studio. You will undertake music video production and score writing for film. You will also study the roles and requirements for work in the music industry. You will either progress to a junior music industry role or to a specialist music/audio related degree programme.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C including English or a Level 2 vocational qualification at merit level plus a relevant Level 2 literacy qualification. Relevant experience in this field of study will be taken into consideration for adults returning to education.

Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC National Certificate Level 3

Course code: NC3MPAr4

This course provides essential skills and training for anyone wishing to pursue a career in acting. This highly practical course enables you to work and develop your skills in devising, storytelling, script writing, improvisation and voice. You will learn how the acting industry works and how to find employment as an actor in theatre and film. The course also teaches you essential technical skills in lighting and sound. Once completed most learners progress onto university or drama school.

From Level 2 and 3 you can go into employment. From Level 3 you can also go on to higher education at Levels 4 and above, such as HNC/D, NVQ 4 and 5, foundation degrees, honours degrees and professional qualifications.

Entry requirementsYou should always check the specific entry requirements for the course you are applying for. We may ask you to do an initial assessment when you come for interview. Your levels of English and maths are important, and we ask for a reference.

Vocational coursesThe names of some qualifications differ to those shown in the table alongside because they are awarded by different organisations. For example, a qualification in childcare will be awarded by CACHE, whilst others may be given by City & Guilds.

FEES AND FINANCIAL HELP

Some of our courses are free, but most have tuition, exams, materials and equipment costs. Whether you pay fees, and how much you pay, will depend on the kind of course you do, your age and personal circumstances.

Residence, home fees and international learnersMany of our courses are funded by the government and students who are settled in the UK, and have lived here for at least three years, will normally pay home fees (the standard rate). Home fees are also paid by other groups, such as residents of the EU/EEA and refugees. You’ll find details of home fees below.

Students who are visitors to the UK, or who do not meet the residence requirements, pay a higher international (overseas) rate of fees. International learners are required to study at least 15 hours a week and on a Level 3 course as part of their visa requirements.

1. If you are under 19 on 31 August 2010 Tuition is free. Exam and material costs are free. You pay for any equipment and books that you keep.

2. If you are 19 or over on 31 August 2010 You pay tuition, exam and materials fees at the start of your course, unless you are eligible for a concession, or studying for your first qualification at a specified level.

3. If you are 19 or over on 31 August 2010 and get an income-based benefit, such as Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, or Working Tax Credit (depending on level)

You get a concession – your tuition is free. You pay a fee for materials, equipment and exams.

4. If you are aged 19 or over on 31 August 2010 and studying on a full Level 2 course for the first time (or a Level 3 course without having a Level 2 qualification)


5. If you are aged 19 – 25 on 31 August 2010 and studying on a full level 3 course for the first time.

• FullcostcoursesThe College runs courses for people in work who want to improve their skills and for personal development. In some cases these courses have no government funding, which means that learners pay the full cost and there are no concessions.

• HigherEducationFeesThere are different fee rates for higher education courses (HNC/HND and foundation degrees). For information about help with fees (student grants and loans) check out the website www.direct.gov.uk/gotouni

• TraintoGain–discountsforemployees Train to Gain is a Government programme designed to help businesses improve the skill levels of their workforce. If you are employed, working as a volunteer, or self-employed, you may be able to benefit from this scheme. Training is free for people studying for their first full Level 2 qualification and subsidised for the first full Level 3 qualification. There are Apprenticeship schemes for young people and adults. There is also help available for people who need to improve their basic literacy and numeracy. To find out more, call our Employment Training Line on 0800 678 3000.

Ways to PayYou must pay your fees at the time you enrol. You can pay in cash, by cheque or credit/debit card.

For most courses, you can pay in four equal monthly instalments if your fees are over £25 (your first instalment must be paid at the point of enrolment). Different rules apply to International Learners – see our website for more information. We make every effort to ensure that information about courses and fees in this guide is accurate. The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London reserves the right to make changes to courses and fees due to demand and other factors.

FINANCIAL HELP WHILE YOU LEARN

In addition to the concessions in the table overleaf, there are a number of ways that learners may get help with fees and the costs of study.

Learner Support FundThe Learner Support Fund provides eligible learners with help towards the cost of course fees, materials, equipment, exam fees and childcare. You need to apply early – as soon as you enrol – as funds are limited.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)If you are aged 16 to 18 and studying on a full-time course, you may be eligible for an EMA of up to £30 a week. For an application form visit www.moneytolearn.direct.gov.uk or pick one up at the College when you come in for interview.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)With an ALG you could get up to £30 a week during term time – that is around £1,000 a year. You must be 19 or over and studying 12 hours a week or more, for your first full Level 2 or first full Level 3 qualification. THE FIVE STEPS TO APPLYING

Great, you have found the course that is right for you, so now you need to apply to join us.

Step 1: ApplyYou will find a form in the back of this Guide. You need to provide a reference as part of your application.

Step 2: AcknowledgementWe will write to you to acknowledge your application. If you have not heard from us within three weeks then please get in touch to check that we have received your form.

Step 3: InterviewWe invite you to come in for an interview, and these are usually held between January and June, for courses starting in September. For many courses you will take an initial assessment as part of the interview process. This will help us in offering you a place on the right course.

Step 4: Course OfferWe offer you a place on a course. This may be a conditional or unconditional offer. Any conditions attached to your offer will be explained to you at your interview.

Step 5: EnrolWe invite you to come in to enrol. For courses starting in September enrolment is in late August or early September. Remember, your place is not secure until you have completed the enrolment process.

IMPORTANT: for courses starting in September 2010 enrolment begins on 23 August 2010. You will receive a letter with a date and time for you to come in to the College to complete yourenrolment.Pleaseavoidtakingholidaysatthistime.
