Day and evening classes in your neighbourhoodAs well as our Tottenham and Enfield Centres, The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London also delivers teaching and learning out in the community. We offer a range of long and short courses for adults in many venues around Haringey and Enfield. Classes are held in venues such as community centres, church halls and local schools, at flexible times of the day and evening.

Learner Support CentreOur Learner Support Centre provides information and advice on a range of issues including financial support.

Help with study skillsOur experts can also help if you have a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia. This service operates from the Centenary Learning Centre.

Career choicesWe provide advice and information about a range of future career and study plans, whether you are applying to university, preparing for interviews or finding the right job. The team also works closely with Connexions advisers.

Connexions Personal Adviser If you are under 20 years of age, they can help you with support, information and advice about courses, money, jobs, housing problems, health and much more.

Juggling study and childcare We have nursery facilities for children of pre-school age. We also work in partnership with local nurseries, after school clubs and Ofsted registered childminders to help learners manage their childcare needs for their study time at College. We may also be able to help you meet the cost of this care.

The College also administers Care to Learn and free childcare for Training and Learning for Work schemes to support eligible learners.

Students’ Union Our local branch of the National Union of Students (NUS) represents student views on college issues. We also take an active role in organising student social events. The NUS membership card gives discounts at a wide range of shops and entertainment venues across London.

Funding your studyThere are no fees to pay if you are 16-18 and meet certain residency and immigration conditions. If you are 19 or over you will have to pay fees on most courses (you’ll find more information about the fees for UK and overseas learners on page 138 of this guide). If you do need help, however, you’ll find the staff in our Learner Support Centre very helpful. These key staff assess your individual circumstances and match you to any financial support that you are eligible for. You may be able to get help with course and exam fees, materials, equipment or childcare.

Our Employer Training Solutions (ETS) team consists of qualified and experienced training staff from a wide range of industries. We have partnered with over 500 organisations, from household names such as BT, Metroline and the Royal Mail, right through to new businesses. We also work with a wide range of boroughs across London so you can be sure that we have significant experience in identifying training needs.

Train to Gain funding to support your businessThis government-backed initiative helps employees gain valuable skills, while employers improve the efficiency and productivity of their businesses. The initiativehelpstrainemployeestoachieveafullNVQLevel2/3,anditiscompletely free at Level 2, and with substantial subsidies at Level 3, providing your employees meet some basic eligibility criteria.

How it works Our ETS team works with you to provide flexible, customised training solutions to suit your particular business needs. We can deliver training throughout London and the Home Counties, either at your company’s premises or here at the College.

A member of our ETS team meets you to talk through your organisation’s needs. We will then develop a training plan for your organisation. For example:

Taster sessions – short courses that introduce learners to a subject

We offer courses in a range of subjects including employment rights, equality, negotiating, health and safety, and union organising for union officers, stewards, safety reps and Union Learning Reps. Our teaching staff share a determination to make science an interesting and exciting subject for learners at all levels.

Science is for everyone with an interest in their immediate surroundings and the universe. We offer a range of vocational courses to suit your needs. They include vocational science pathways in forensic and medical science and access courses in biological science and engineering.

Many courses lead to university or employment. All full-time courses include key skills such as communications and information technology, which help to improve your performance in coursework and employment.

SCIENCE

Science BTEC Introductory Certificate Level 1

Course code: IC1MSCN1

This course provides the basic knowledge for starting a career in science for people who have not studied before. It includes the study of life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes. You do a set of eight units with a test, assignments and experiments in each.

Requirements: You will need to pass a test when you come for interview. You will also needa referee to comment on your previous studies.

APPLIED SCIENCE

Applied Science BTEC First Diploma Level 2

Course code: FD2MAPS1

This course is designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification in science. You will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for employment or further study at Level 3.

Requirements: You will need at least four GCSE subjects achieved at grade D or higher.

APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENCE

Applied Medical Science BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MEDS1

This course is ideal if you want a career in the field of medical sciences. It is made up of 12 units for the certificate and 18 units for the diploma. Two of the units are set and marked by examiners. The others are marked by tutors and moderated by the examiners. The qualification is equivalent to two subjects at A Level.

Requirements: You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including maths and science or a BTEC First in Science at merit grade. You will need to pass an initial assessment. You will also need a reference on your ability to study.

FORENSIC SCIENCE

Applied Forensic Science BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MAPS1

This course is ideal if you want a career in forensic science. It is made up of 12 units for the certificate and 18 units for the diploma. Two of the units are set and marked by examiners. The others are marked by tutors and moderated by the examiners. The qualification is equivalent to two subjects at A Level.

Requirements: You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including maths and science or a BTEC First in Science at merit grade. You will need to pass an initial assessment. You will also need a reference on your ability to study.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION

Engineering – Access to Higher Education Diploma Level 3

This course is great for those without formal academic qualifications who would like to progress to a higher education programme (such as an Honours Degree, a Foundation Degree, a Certificate of Higher Education or Higher National programme) at a university. Modules covered include maths, physics, electronics and ICT.

Requirements: You must be over 19 years of age and be able to provide evidence that you have the necessary background and motivation to succeed.

Art and Design BTEC First Diploma Level 2

Course code: FD2MArD1

This course is for those who are at the start of their careers and who need a broad vocational introduction to art and design. It aims to develop design skills including painting and drawing, contextual studies, sculpture, 3D graphics /digital imaging, time based media and key skills, textiles, sculpture and 3D design products, and a variety of 2D media.

Requirements: You will need three GCSEs at grade D or above including English, or a Level 1 vocational qualification plus a relevant Level 1 literacy qualification. You must show a strong interest in art and design and will need to provide visual evidence by either presenting a portfolio of work or completing a project set by the College at interview stage.

Art and Design (Art and Design Pathway) BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MArT1

This is a broad art and design course aimed to give you relevant vocational skills in a variety of art and design disciplines. You will study digital graphic design, fashion textiles, fine art and 3D during the first year.

In the second year you will be able to choose options from fine art, sculpture, product design, textiles, fashion and graphic design. These options will be linked to work placements and assignment briefs will be tailored to meet industry standards. After completing this course, most students progress to a specialist art and design related degree programme.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C including English or a Level 2 vocational qualification at merit level plus a relevant Level 2 literacy qualification. You must show a strong interest in art and design and will need to provide visual evidence by either presenting a portfolio of work or completing a project set by the College at interview stage.

Art and Design (Fashion Pathway) BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: BNCMFTP4

In this specialist course you will learn fashion-related industry skills. You will develop and build a strong portfolio which will cover pattern cutting, garment construction, design illustration and textiles. You will either progress to a junior industry role or to a specialist fashion related degree programme.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C including English or a Level 2 vocational qualification plus a relevant Level 2 literacy qualification. You must show a strong interest in art and design and will need to provide visual evidence by either presenting a portfolio of work or completing a project set by the College at interview stage.

Art and Design BTEC Foundation Diploma Level 3

Course code: ND3MFNs1

This course is for those who intend to study a specialist art or design course at degree level. You will study graphic design, fashion textiles, fine art and 3D during the first term before specialising in the second term.

Requirements: You will need a Level 3 qualification or a strong art and design portfolio.

This course has been designed by City & Guilds to provide basic training in construction skills for those seeking employment in the construction industry. Requirements: The course is suitable for 16-18 year olds who have no previous experience or knowledge of the construction industry.

This is an introductory course for anyone whose second language is English. Study is split into 50 percent ESOL classes and 50 percent construction theory and workshop activities. Construction theory is based on health and safety best practice, starting work in construction, and personal effectiveness. Three written assignments are set during the one year course. On this course you will study three main themes:

Designing the built environment: learning how it is designed and constructed, how it impacts on people and communities, and how history, politics and economics affect it. Creating the built environment: developing a range of skills and knowledge needed in different industries – for example, using tools and understanding modern construction methods and materials. Valuing and using the built environment: analysing the need for good management and continuous maintenance, and understanding the importance of good design, workmanship and teamwork.

There are 11 optional units which allow a variety of routes for candidates to follow and subject areas in which to specialise, to complete the diploma.

This course is suitable for anyone who is seeking a recognised qualification as a personal trainer in a fitness gym or freelance. It covers theory (anatomy and physiology), exercise nutrition, training in different environments and producing a business plan. Sport and Active Leisure Apprenticeship Level 2

This Apprenticeship contains pathways that cover many aspects of sport and leisure, from professional sport to exercise instruction and playwork, including work in leisure centres, gyms, swimming pools, stadiums and private sports clubs, as well as outdoor activity centres and adventure playgrounds.

The opportunities in the Apprenticeship are very broad if you enjoy working with people; you could instruct swimming classes, lead outdoor activity trips, or help gym visitors reach their fitness goals. Apprentices in this area need to be able to communicate with a broad range of people in order to motivate and instruct them.

Requirements: You will need to be in employment in the sports industry and have an EU passport to be considered for this course.

Sport and Active Leisure Advanced Diploma Level 3

This course will focus on three main areas: The individual – explore how important an active and healthy lifestyle is, as well as how the body works. The industry – learn all about the sport and active leisure industry, and who works in it, including sports clubs, specialist colleges, commercial sponsors and funding agencies. The community – find out why the sport and active leisure industry is described as ’people-centred’, developing the all-important customer service and relationship building skills you’ll need to succeed in it.

We offer a safe and supported environment for learners with a range of learning difficulties. We aim to help you reach your full potential both in work and life.

During a detailed induction we will work with you to design a personalised programme of study and other activities to meet your needs and aspirations. There will be part-time and full-time options and opportunities to try out various vocational tasters and work experiences.

Our programmes focus on preparation for life and work and include communication, literacy, numeracy and information technology as well as developing independent living skills. Some study may lead to a qualification at Entry Level.

FEES AND FINANCIAL HELP

Some of our courses are free, but most have tuition, exams, materials and equipment costs. Whether you pay fees, and how much you pay, will depend on the kind of course you do, your age and personal circumstances.

Residence, home fees and international learnersMany of our courses are funded by the government and students who are settled in the UK, and have lived here for at least three years, will normally pay home fees (the standard rate). Home fees are also paid by other groups, such as residents of the EU/EEA and refugees. You’ll find details of home fees below.

Students who are visitors to the UK, or who do not meet the residence requirements, pay a higher international (overseas) rate of fees. International learners are required to study at least 15 hours a week and on a Level 3 course as part of their visa requirements.

FINANCIAL HELP WHILE YOU LEARN

In addition to the concessions in the table overleaf, there are a number of ways that learners may get help with fees and the costs of study.

Learner Support FundThe Learner Support Fund provides eligible learners with help towards the cost of course fees, materials, equipment, exam fees and childcare. You need to apply early – as soon as you enrol – as funds are limited.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)If you are aged 16 to 18 and studying on a full-time course, you may be eligible for an EMA of up to £30 a week. For an application form visit www.moneytolearn.direct.gov.uk or pick one up at the College when you come in for interview.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)With an ALG you could get up to £30 a week during term time – that is around £1,000 a year.
