Martin Åkerwall – Biography Martin Åkerwall is known to practice leadership with enthusiasm and excitement.

He has proven himself to be a highly qualified and inspiring conductor with a steady and clear technique of conducting. His wide knowledge and “cultura” allow him to reach in a deep and complete way the message of an orchestral score. Danish-Swedish conductor Martin Åkerwall studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen (percussion, piano, composition) and became part of the Finnish conductor tradition with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Sakari Oramo studying orchestral conducting with Jorma Panula at The Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Åkerwall made his first professional appearances as a conductor with Danish symphony orchestras while still a student in 1989. A remarkable debut with Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, Copenhagen in 1991 gained Martin Åkerwall a positive and firm reputation as one of Denmark´s most promising talents. Furthermore he was awarded with several distinguished Danish prizes.

Martin Åkerwall – Biography

Åkerwall began his career at German theaters as solo-rèpetiteur, principal coach and 1st Conductor before he enjoyed positions as opera and ballet conductor at prominent theatres such as the Bern State Opera in Switzerland, The Royal Danish Theater and The Finnish Opera. In this respect his artistic level has been praised by the press as well as world-class artists such as Dimitri Kitajenko, Giancarlo Andretta, Miguel Gomez Martinez, Michael Schønwandt, Rodion Shchedrin and Henryk Gorecki. Martin Åkerwall has regularly worked with the Scandinavian symphony orchestras and ensembles. He has appeared in concerts with orchestras in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, USA, France, Singapore, Prague, Germany and Switzerland. Martin Åkerwall has a keen interest in the development of young talent in music. He has worked with several youth orchestras in Europe and Asia. Over a period of three years as artistic director of The Tivoli Boys Guard he refined its culture and brought the youngsters to a high artistic level while serving as Chief Conductor of the Royal Life Guards Band. Martin Åkerwall spends his free time composing and kayaking. In the course of his life, he has practiced yoga and meditation.

Bona Nuova 3 Italy I met Martin Åkerwall for the first time few years ago when he was my assistant for a Rossini´s “Viaggio a Reims” new production at the Royal Opera of Copenhagen. I started immediately to respect Mr. Åkerwall. After that collaboration I had again several opportunities to know him better. I saw his ballet-performances at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen; I saw some of his compositions, scores that I recommended to different orchestras as for example the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna or the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Many times comparing our studies and experiences I enjoyed his large knowledge and sensitive humanity. Mr. Åkerwall owns a steady and clear technique of conducting and his wide knowledge, “cultura” allow him to reach in a deep and complete way the message of an orchestral score. Recommendation for the conductor and composer Martin Åkerwall It was for me an astonishing and unforgettable experience when Mr. Åkerwall conducted my “Carmen Suite” at The Finnish National Opera in 2003. He conducted my music in a highly professional and musical manner and managed to reveal new sides of my score that not even some of the greatest legends of conductors who have conducted my music before have discovered. Martin Åkerwall gave my positive impressions from Helsinki further solidity when I saw him again conducting my ballet “Anna Karenina” at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen April and August of 2004. His rhythmic sense for the music is beyond any doubt very secure, his phrasing complete organic. The orchestra played precise and tight under his clearly readable hands. He gained well-deserved noticeable sympathy and respect from everybody involved with these ballet performances, including myself. As a composer Martin Åkerwall stands for me on an equally high level. He owns a highly developed sense for structure and drama and yet he composes with his heart. His concert for piano and winds “Arlequin” reveals a fabulous inventive richness in colour, ideas and instrumentation. The most interesting music for tuba I have seen for years is his powerful piece for tuba and piano “Iceflower”. This music is exquisite original, profound and beautiful.
