This is based on the fact that pure water will usually have very few ions present. Ions will conduct. Low ionic content = low conductivity. Note that conductivity is NOT a quantitative measurement of any or all impurities. Specifically, conductivity does not reflect the quantity of bacteria, pyrogens, or non-ionized solids present. For example, measure the conductivity of 100 ml of deionized or distilled water. Then add one gram of glucose and remeasure. What happened? If everything was clean, the conductivity stayed about the same, and the TDS is 10,000 mg/l! The same will hold true if bacteria were added. Therefore, a low conductivity DOES NOT GUARANTEE good water, but a high conductivity pretty much assures that you will have problems. No conductivity meter we know of is capable of measuring TDS. They all apply a factor to convert the conductivity that they measure to calculate a number they call TDS. In most cases, TDS is expressed as “mg/l as KCl”. This is how it is expressed in Standard Methods. However, a few meters express TDS as “mg/l as NaCl”, or even some other terms. Be careful about this. If you are using your conductivity meter to determine TDS, you MUST know in what terms your meter expresses TDS, or you WILL get the wrong answer. You will also need to use the same type of standards to check your meter. All NCL conductivity standards are made according to Standard Methods, using KCl traceable to NIST. Specific conductance takes the cell path into consideration, and one cm is used as a standard path length. The terms “microsiemens/cm” and “millisiemens/cm” are used. 1 microsiemen = 1 micromho/cm 1 millisiemen = 1 millimho/cm The following chart gives some additional conversions: Resistivity is the inverse of conductivity. Pure water has a LOW conductivity, and therefore, a HIGH resistivity. Resistivity is measured in ohms. For lab pure water, the typical resistivity is in the Megohm range (1 Megohm = 1,000,000 ohms). Conductivity is often used as an indication of water purity. This is based on the fact that pure water will usually have very few ions present. Ions will conduct. Low ionic content = low conductivity. Note that conductivity is NOT a quantitative measurement of any or all impurities.
