Conditions of Sale
The CMS welcomes items of cricket memorabilia for its auctions. There will normally be just two auctions in the year - March and October. The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged etc., or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia to all its members (including overseas) and only CMS members are eligible to bid for items. Members are welcome to send postal bids which should be in writing/e-mail before the auction. Bids will normally start at 60% of the bid unless there is a higher reserve price or other postal bids. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will usually be sent by recorded delivery. Postage will be paid by the successful postal bidder. The CMS will be responsible for the items sent for auction while they are in the possession of the CMS. The CMS welcomes items of particular and unusual interest for the auctions. Non-members can send items for auction but we would discourage large quantities of books, magazines etc. A list of prices realised at an auction will be included with the next magazine due for publication after the auction.
Remember - it is the only cricket auction with no buyers premium!

38. ‘Punch’ cartoon by Bernard Partridge. ‘On the bat’s back I do merrily fly after the Ashes

welcome the Australian Cricket Team. Framed and glazed, 10” x 12”. VG Est. £10/15
Sir John Bernard Partridge (1861 – 1945) joined ‘Punch’ in 1891 and in 1910 became their chief
cartoonist. He also produced caricatures for ‘Vanity Fair’, but not any of the cricketers.
39. Framed print entitled ‘Surrey Cricket Ground’. An attractive coloured print depicting a match in
progress. Many of the players/umpires are clad in top hats. There is a sizable gathering round the
boundary, including spectators on horseback. There is a white pavilion, which looks more like a fine
house and other buildings to the background. VG Est. £8/12
Evidence suggests that this shows a match from 1848, the picture from which the print is derived
having been produced in 1896.

litho technique: (1) ‘Inspecting the Wicket’ umpires are in a rowing boat with the top of the stumps
just visible, gasholder to the left, pavilion to the right with fish and seagulls; (2) ‘Getting the bird’
batsman is bowled as duck flies over his head, grisly umpire with raised finger is at the other end.
Both 11” x 14”, one portrait, one landscape. As new in protective film Est. £5/10
41. Mounted print entitled “Last Man In”. A mounted print measuring 12”x10” depicting an older
player instructing a young lad before going in to bat. In the background the wicket is broken and a
batsman trudges off. The lad has a cap several sizes too big, pads which reach his waist and a bat

had a disagreement with the committee. His non stop humour earned him the name “Cricket’s
Comedian”.
