The Humanity of Jesus

• He learned obedience through hissuffering

 – Heb 5:7-8: In the days of His flesh, He offeredup both prayers and supplications with loudcrying and tears to the One able to save Himfrom death, and He was heard because of Hispiety. Although He was a Son, He learnedobedience from the things which He suffered.

The Humanity of Jesus

• He had a human soul – Matt 26:38: Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply

grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keepwatch with Me."

 – John 12:27: "Now My soul has become troubled; andwhat shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour '?But for this purpose I came to this hour.

 – John 13:21: When Jesus had said this, He became

troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Truly, truly, Isay to you, that one of you will betray Me.“

 – The significance of this point will become apparentwhen we address the history of Christology

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

The Humanity of Jesus

• He had the full range of human emotions – Matt 8:10: Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled

and said to those who were following, "Truly I say toyou, I have not found such great faith with anyone in

Israel.” – John 11:33, 35: When Jesus therefore saw [Mary,

the sister of Lazarus] weeping, and the Jews whocame with her also weeping, He was deeply moved inspirit and was troubled….35Jesus wept.

 – Heb 5:7: In the days of His flesh, He offered up bothprayers and supplications with loud crying and tearsto the One able to save Him from death, and He washeard because of His piety.

The Humanity of Jesus

• The people closest to Jesus saw him asmerely a man

 – Matt 8:27: The men were amazed, and said,"What kind of a man is this, that even thewinds and the sea obey Him?"

 – Matt 9:8: But when the crowds saw this, they

were awestruck, and glorified God, who hadgiven such authority to men.

The Humanity of Jesus

• The people closest to Jesus saw him as merely a man

 –  Matt 13:53-58: When Jesus had finished these parables,He departed from there. He came to His hometown andbegan teaching them in their synagogue, so that they wereastonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdomand these miraculous powers? Is not this the carpenter'sson? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers,James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And Hissisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man

get all these things?" And they took offense at Him. ButJesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor exceptin his hometown and in his own household.“ And He didnot do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

The Humanity of Jesus

• Jesus was sinless

 – Now you might see this characteristic assomething that would indicate that Jesus wasnot fully human

 – But this would be to forget the condition inwhich man was created

 – Eccl 7:29: Behold, I have found only this, thatGod made men upright, but they have soughtout many devices.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled,

separated from sinners and exalted above theheavens.

 – 1 Pet 1:19: …but with precious blood, as of alamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of

The Humanity of Jesus

Its Necessity

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 20/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be the successful representative for a

new humanity

 – 1 Cor 15:45:

So also it is written, “The firstMAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL.” Thelast Adam became a life-giving spirit.

 – 1 Cor 15:47: The first man is from the earth,

earthy; the second man is from heaven.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 21/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be the successful representative for a

new humanity – Rom 5:18-19: So then as through one

transgression there resulted condemnation toall men, even so through one act ofrighteousness there resulted justification oflife to all men. For as through the one man's

disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One themany will be made righteous.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 22/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be the successful representative for a

new humanity

 – Phil 3:21:

…who will transform the body ofour humble state into conformity with the bodyof His glory, by the exertion of the power thatHe has even to subject all things to Himself.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 23/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be the successful representative for a new

humanity

 – 1 Cor 15:23: But each in his own order: Christ the

first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at Hiscoming.

 – 1 Cor 15:42-44: So also is the resurrection of thedead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised animperishable body; it is sown in dishonor, it is raisedin glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; itis sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. Ifthere is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 24/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be the successful representative for a new humanity

 –  Heb 2:6-10: But one has testified somewhere, saying, "What isman, that you remember him? Or the son of man, that you areconcerned about him? You have made him for a little while lower

than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, and have appointed him over the works of your hands; you haveput all things in subjection under his feet." For in subjecting allthings to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But nowwe do not yet see all things subjected to him. But we do see Himwho was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely,Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and

honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death foreveryone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, andthrough whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, toperfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 25/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To sympathize with our weaknesses

 – Heb 2:18: For since He Himself was temptedin that which He has suffered, He is able tocome to the aid of those who are tempted.

 – Heb 4:15: For we do not have a high priestwho cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all thingsas we are, yet without sin.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 26/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be a substitute sacrifice

 – Heb 2:16-17: For assuredly He does not givehelp to angels, but He gives help to thedescendant of Abraham. Therefore, He had tobe made like His brethren in all things, so thatHe might become a merciful and faithful highpriest in things pertaining to God, to make

propitiation for the sins of the people.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 27/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be the one mediator between God and

men

 – 1 Tim 2:5:

For there is one God, and onemediator also between God and men, theman Christ Jesus.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 28/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be our example and pattern for living

 – 1 John 2:6: …the one who says he abides in Himought himself to walk in the same manner as He

walked. – 1 John 3:2: Beloved, now we are children of God,

and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. Weknow that when He appears, we will be like Him,because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone

who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, justas He is pure.

The Humanity of Jesus:

Its Necessity• To be our example and pattern for living

 – 1 Pet 2:21-22: For you have been called forthis purpose, since Christ also suffered foryou, leaving you an example for you to followin His steps, who committed no sin, nor wasany deceit found in his mouth.

The Humanity of Jesus

Was Jesus able to sin?

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 32/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Impeccability• The Bible does not answer this question

directly

• What we do know directly is that Jesus, infact, never sinned…

• And that Jesus was tempted in all ways aswe are

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 33/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Impeccability• The Bible does, however, seem to suggest that it

was impossible for Jesus to sin

 – Jas 1:13: Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am

being tempted by God"; for God cannot be temptedby evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

 – Since Jesus is also fully God even as he is fully man,it seems that we must conclude this about the God-man as well.

 – The union of Jesus’ two natures in one personprevents him from doing any unrighteousness.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 34/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Impeccability• How, then, can we say that his

temptations were real?

 – Jesus never relied on his divine nature toperform any act of righteousness;

 – He relied as a man solely on theempowerment of the Holy Spirit.

 – This is what makes his being tempted as weare, temptation as we are.

 – The classic example of this is Matthew 4

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 35/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Impeccability• How, then, can we say that his temptations were

real?

 – “Imagine a strong man who performs at a state fair by

bending bars of steel. The first bar he picks up is ahalf inch in diameter. He bends it to a ninety degreeangle and it breaks. Then he picks up an inch-thickbar and bends it until the ends of the bar touch, butstill it does not break. Which bar endured the most

pressure? The obvious answer is the second bar. Itabsorbed the full force of the man’s strength and didnot break.

8/6/2019 Condensed Theology Lecture 22

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/condensed-theology-lecture-22 36/59

The Humanity of Jesus:

Impeccability• How, then, can we say that his temptations were

real?

 – “On earth, Christ was like that second bar. Because

he never gave in, because he did not run away, because he never went where temptation would lead, but stood strong until that moment of temptation wasover, he endured the full power of temptation. Christendured stress, pain, suffering, and sacrifice of an

intensity that we will never face because he did notbreak. He stood strong against sin for us. Heendured everything the world could throw at him.”
