6.Intensive Interaction

4.How does your engine run? Our bodies are like car engines. Sometimes they run fast and we have to hold on tight! Sometimes they run slow and we might need to get our car serviced. At Yarrabah School we have rolled out the Alert Program across the school classes. It is

about learning to self-regulate (arousal) levels using sensory activities. It is centered around experiential learning sessions that

allow students to trial sensory activities and monitor changes in their alert

This workshop aims to help understand why we see challenging behaviour, especially within the home

environment. We aim to provide some useful strategies to help manage these behaviors at home and when you are out in the community. We will provide strategies that are implemented

within the school that can be transferred to home.

levels and the impact on their attention, behaviour and concentration. The program uses the analogy of our bodies being like a car engine. Students use the visual resource of a speedometer to help identify if their body is feeling 'revved up red' (fast), 'white' (ready to learn), or 'mellow yellow'

(slow) at various times throughout their school day.

5. Futures/Pathways

This session is aimed at families with students in the 13-18 age range Learn about the Futures for Young Adults program, post school options and funding.

We are seeing great benefits with our studentsand would love to share them with you.

In this presentation on the theme of self-compassion Charles will share insights, tips and simple practices in the nature and practice of self-compassion in everyday life with the parents of the Yarrabah School community. The presentation will acknowledge that there are times when all parents feel inadequate, imperfect, challenged

and vulnerable.

2. Useful tips forchallenging behaviour at home

1.Respectful Matters and the Berry Street Educational Model Respectful Matters is a combination of the curriculum based programs, Respectful Relationships and KidsMatter. Their purpose is to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) builds self confidence, enjoyment of learning and minimises fear around learning. It aims to build a new generation of more thoughtful, self-aware students in a radically changing and increasingly more rapid and stressful world.

3.Speech AAC

(Augmentative and Alternative Communication)This workshop aims to help gain an understanding of different communication methods and ways to support the implementation of these systems with your child. This will be a practical and hands on workshop designed to show attendees the experience of communicating throughthe use of AAC.

Intensive Interaction works on early interaction abilities - how to enjoy being

with other people - to relate, interact, know, understand and practice

communication routines. It teaches and develops the 'Fundamentals of Communication' attainments such as: use and

understanding of eye contacts; facial expressions; vocalisations leading to speech;

taking turns in exchanges of conversations; and the structure of conversation.
