Concrete supporting details
Example Statistics Quotations
The most common are used in concrete supporting details :
1. Example
There are 2 cautions you should keep in mind if you use examples for support :
First, remember that in formal academic writing – research paper, theses and the like personal examples are considered
weak support ,so use them infrequently
Second,be sure that your examples really prove your point
Language and PerceptionAlthough we all possess the same physical organs for sensing
the world – eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, noses for smelling, skin forfeeling, and mouths for tasting-our perception of the world depends toa great extent on the language we speak.Scholars have discoveredthat we cannot perceive things that we have not named. Each languageis like a pair of eyeglasses through which we “see” the world in aparticular way.A classic example of the relationship between languageand perception is the world snow.In the English language, there is onlythat one word to describe all of the possible kinds of snow.In Eskimolanguage, however ,there as many as thirty-two different words forsnow. For instance, the Eskimos have different words for fallingsnow, snow on the ground, snow packed as hard as ice, slushy snow,wind-driven show, and what we might call “cornmeal” snow.Incontrast, cultures that rarely experience cold weather and snow mayhave only one word to express several concepts that are differentiatedin English. The ancient Aztec languages of Mexico, for example, used onlyone word to mean snow, cold, and ice.
2. Statistic
World population GrowthThe world’s population has been increasing
dramatically.According to a United Nations chart ofworld population growth, the world’s populationsuddenly multiplied in the nineteenth and twentiethcenturies. At the beginning of the Christian era, theestimated world population was 200 to 300 million.Ittook more than 1800 years for the population toreach one billion. Then in less than one hundredyears, the figure doubled to two billion by 1930.By1975,when it reached four billion,it had doubled againin less than fifty years. The united Nations hasprojected an increase to more than six billion by theyear 2000.
There are 3 steps to using stastics :
Decide what main idea the graphs illustrate and write this
idea as a topic sentence.
Write five to eight supporting statements, using the statistical
information shown in the graphs.Be sure the mention
the source of your statistics in your paragraph
Ask a classmate to check your paragraph against the Peer Editing
Checklist at the end of the chapter before you hand it in.
Conclusion
Use concrete supporting details toprove your points
Don’t use opinions for support Use examples, extended examples,or
statistics as support
