DIVINE SERVICE, SETTING ONE

Opening Hymn: “Baptismal Waters Cover Me” LSB 616

Sacrament of Holy Baptism for Nolan Kevin Steffens (Sat.) LSB 268-271

Invocation, Confession & Absolution LSB 151

Introit Ps. 74:1–3; antiphon: Ps. 69:9

P: For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who

reproach you have fallen on me.

C: O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against

the sheep of your pasture? P: Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have

redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you

have dwelt.

C: Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed

everything in the sanctuary!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in

the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: For zeal for your house has consumed me,

C: and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

Kyrie LSB 152

Hymn of Praise (omitted in Lent)

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you. P: Let us pray.

P: O God, You see that of ourselves we have no strength. By Your mighty power

defend us from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil

thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our

Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

forever.

C: Amen.

Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 26:8–15 8And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him

to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid

hold of him, saying, “You shall die! 9Why have you prophesied in the name of the

LORD, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate,

without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of

the LORD. 10

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the

king’s house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New

Gate of the house of the LORD. 11

Then the priests and the prophets said to the

officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death, because he

Page 3: Concordia Lutheran Church...2 The Second Sunday in Lent Sunday, March 17, 2019 DIVINE SERVICE, SETTING ONE Opening Hymn: “Baptismal Waters Cover Me” LSB 616 Sacrament of Holy Baptism

3

has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.” 12

Then

Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The LORD sent me to

prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13

Now

therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your

God, and the LORD will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. 14

But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to

you. 15

Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent

blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD

sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

Gradual P: [O come, let us fix our eyes on] Jesus,

C: the founder and perfecter of our faith, P: who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame,

C: and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Epistle Reading Philippians 3:17—4:1 17

Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to

the example you have in us. 18

For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell

you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19

Their end is

destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on

earthly things. 20

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the

Lord Jesus Christ, 21

who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body,

by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. 1Therefore, my

brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord,

my beloved.

Common Alleluia (omitted in Lent)

Holy Gospel Luke 13:31–35 31

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to [Jesus], “Get away from here,

for Herod wants to kill you.” 32

And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I

cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish

my course. 33

Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day

following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ 34

O

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent

to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her

brood under her wings, and you would not! 35

Behold, your house is forsaken. And I

tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of

the Lord!’”

The Power of Baptism – Third – “How can water do such great things? Certainly not

just water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. For without God’s word the water is plain water and no Baptism. But with the word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit, as St. Paul says in Titus, chapter three: “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying.” Titus 3:5-8

Announcements A Word of God to chew on this week:

14Since therefore the children share in flesh and

blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

15and deliver all those who through

fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. Hebrews 2:14-15 (ESV) Think about it. Talk about it. Memorize it. Take this wonderful food from God, and let it strengthen you. We have a starting list of 11 candidates that will be contacted by phone this week to see if they are available for a call. The committee will meet again this Tuesday, March 19, to go over the results of these phone calls. We are using our vacancy survey and our ministry description for Concordia Lutheran Church as our guideline for this process. Please keep the committee members in your prayers through this process. Thrivent Choice Dollars! Since the Choice program began in 2010, Concordia,

Frohna, has received a total of $102,375 from Thrivent! This is the most important quarter to direct Choice Dollars, as you can capture everything received for the year 2018 that was not previously directed. Thrivent members need to direct their Choice Dollars prior to Sunday, March 31, 2019, in order to capture any remaining 2018 Choice Dollars. This is free money; please don’t let it go to waste. If you have any questions, please contact your Thrivent Representative or talk with Carol Duggan. (FYI – also since the program began, Saxony Lutheran High School has received $104,428, UCLS - $32,675, and The Lutheran Heritage Museum - $10,366.) A Note from the Treasurer: As you look at designating Thrivent Choice Dollars, if you designate them to Concordia Lutheran Church, please remember that unless you choose otherwise, your Choice Dollars are donated to the General Fund. If you wish to have your dollars go to a specific area/fund, you can either get a form from Carol Duggan to designate the funds, or you can contact the church treasurer, Derek Miesner, at [email protected]. The Altenburg Zone LWML Spring Rally will be Sunday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at Concordia.
