ATeachable Moment

In Fall 2010, as part of a marketing internship for my business degree at Concordia, I traveled to West Africa to gain hands-on experience as a volunteer for a non-governmental organization, Women in Progress (WIP). The following is an excerpt from a journal entry that I wrote during my three-month stay in Ghana, West Africa.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My second week in Africa has been enlightening. I’m starting to grow more accustomed to everyday life in Ghana. I’m no longer stressing about how to take a taxi, whether or not there will be cockroaches in the bathroom (although most likely there will be), how much I should bargain when buying items on the street, or where to find the best street food. It no longer feels weird to sleep under a mosquito net or bathe with a five-gallon bucket.

In Ghana, many of the clothes worn by the locals are second-hand from westernized countries, usually distributed through charities and such. Clothing items cost 1 cedi each in the market (1 cedi= $.70 USD). I learned that obruni wawu is Fante (Ghanaian local language) for dead white man’s clothes, because from a Ghanaian perspective, certainly the white men must be dead to be giving away such nice clothing.

Mary taught me to batik this week. Batiking is a dying process practiced in Ghana, and throughout the world, that incorporates beautiful pigments and a special wax stamp used to create custom designs on calico fabric. In Mary’s case, the batiked fabric will later be used to sew authentic, handmade products for export. She helped me batik a stunning teal skirt covered in adrinkra-batiked symbols. Adrinkra is a collection of West African symbols depicting various meanings such as hope, belief, and “accept God.”

Mary is one of the “Global Mamas,” or fair trade employees that benefit from the organization that I’m working for, Women in Progress (WIP). Through sustainable growth of small, women-owned businesses, WIP helps to alleviate poverty and establish mutual understanding among people of diverse cultures, primarily in the developing nation of Ghana. Since its inception, nearly 500 “Global Mamas” have been given the opportunity to make up to fifteen times the Ghanaian minimum wage (less than $2.00 USD per day), buy new equipment for their businesses, hire apprentices and employees, and most importantly, send their children to school.

In the short time I’ve been here, Ghana has provided me with experiences I’ll never forget.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went to Africa to better my education in business and gain experience in my career field. I left with that, and so much more. I worked and lived among some of the most intelligent and compassionate people on the planet and learned so much about Ghana’s fascinating culture. My volunteer trip to Ghana was the single most important thing I’ve ever accomplished and the most enriching three months of my life.

You’ve probably heard the big news by now, that Concordia

University is building a new Athletic Complex so our soccer and

baseball teams will once again have a home field advantage! With

98% of Concordia University’s students, and student-athletes,

requiring financial aid to enroll, most of our students wouldn’t

get the chance to study, play on the new field, or even cheer on

Concordia’s teams without the support of scholarships from alumni

and friends like you.

By choosing to support Concordia University, you will change the

game for our student-athletes and for those that cannot afford

higher education without assistance. Mike Dickman, one of the

2011 Scholar Athletes, was nervous about the cost of private higher

education until he received his financial aid package: “At CU, I

received athletic, academic, and leadership scholarships that made the

school more affordable than attending a state school.”

Please prayerfully consider how you might support student

scholarships and the Athletic Complex.

Together, we can provide high quality education... and bring the teams home!

Since 1905, Concordia University has prepared teachers who make a positive difference in the lives of the children and families they serve. Today, most philanthropic, business, civic, and political leaders recognize that a quality education is essential for our nation’s strength as a democratic society in a highly competitive world. This award is designed to honor one or more of those leaders for their unique and important contributions to significantly improving education. Named after Oregon’s highly esteemed former Governor Victor Atiyeh, for his life-long passion and leadership for education, the award will be presented each year to the leaders whose professional, philanthropic, business, civic, and/or political advocacy has profoundly changed the odds for our children to succeed in school and beyond. At our inaugural event, the award will go to the man himself, former Governor Atiyeh. Join us as we celebrate his legacy.

AUGUST 8 More than 1,500 community members gathered at

Concordia University on Sunday, August 8, 2010 for a stunning performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore ,

during Opera in the Park by Portland SummerFest.

« December 1Concordia’s Inaugural Tree Lighting attracted upwards of 500 neighbors, faculty, staff, and students and

featured a sing along with the choir. Santa also made an appearance.

Concordia University-Portland is ranked #1 for student participation in community service among U.S. universities with master’s programs, according to WashingtonMonthly’s 2010 national universities ranking. The service category measurement reflects both the number of students participating in community service as well as the total number of service hours performed. Both were measured relative to school size. The measure is based on data reported to the Corporation for National and Community Service by colleges and universities in their applications for the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. On average, Concordia’s faculty, staff, and students contribute more than 223,000 hours of practicum,

internship, and service learning hours per year, serving more than 10,000 community members, 5,000 of whom are youth. For the past two years, and again this year, Concordia was named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America’s communities. In the overall WashingtonMonthly rankings, two of the ten Concordia Universities nationwide – Portland and Chicago – ranked within the top 100 of over 500 institutions, as numbers 87 and 96, respectively. Socialworkearnsnationalaccreditation More than 100 people gathered at Concordia University on Thursday, September. 9, 2010, to celebrate the national accreditation of the University’s social work program by the Council on Social Work Education. “This national accreditation recognizes that Concordia meets the highest national standards for social work education,” said Dr. Sonja Vegdahl, professor and social work program director in Concordia University’s College of Health & Human Services. Concordia University began the five-year accreditation process in 2005. In addition to the national recognition that accreditation brings to Concordia, it offers Concordia graduates additional credibility in seeking both employment and graduate degrees. “Students who graduate from Concordia’s social work program can now apply to masters of social work programs nationwide with ‘advanced standing,’ which means they can complete their masters program in one year instead of the standard two years,”she said. Any Concordia social work student since 2005 can now apply for advanced standing when entering a graduate program. Current social work students,

alumni, faculty, Social Work Advisory Committee members, and local area community partners all celebrated the program’s accreditation on September 9th in the lobby of the George R. White Library & Learning Center. Concordia’s social work program experienced record enrollment this fall. Concordia offers both bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in social work. Both degrees prepare students to become servant-leaders who work actively towards the transformation of society. The program’s curriculum and learning environment is accessible to a broad diversity of students who will make important and unique contributions in their service to clients, communities, and the profession. “Alwaysdemanding,neverthetyrant,quickwithasmileandhisexuberantlaugh…IwillrememberhimforhisknowledgeandthejoyofsharingChristwithhisstudents…Ifthereeverwasanexampleofserviceleadership,Dr.Reinischwouldbeit.” These and many other similar accolades from faculty, staff, and students begin to characterize Rev. Dr. Richard Reinisch, who died on August 13, 2010. A memorial service was held at his home congregation, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, on August 28th. Rev. Dr. Reinisch came to Concordia from Nebraska, where he served a small rural parish. He soon became a vital part of the educational enterprise here. He was a true and dedicated scholar with three masters degrees and a doctorate degree in Classics. He spiced up classes with his quick wit and varied quips designed to teach, encourage, and remonstrate his students, and he added life and joy to any social gathering. He had deep convictions, particularly in his faith in his Lord. He was always ready to listen and discuss spiritual and other matters with anyone. A student of the Bible, he imparted his faith and knowledge with great zeal in the classroom and on campus.

A fighter in the best sense of the term, he lived this out on the basketball court, the tennis court, the golf course, and in pinochle—in each case leaving his challengers behind “gasping for air” and watching him smile in triumphant victory. He continued to show this fighting spirit so well in his last days. “Dick” Reinisch was a trusted and revered colleague with faculty and staff, open to their ideas and ready to work with and for them. At one time he even volunteered his time to coach baseball. He balanced his time well so that he could fulfill his role as a dedicated family man with a great concern for their welfare now and in the future. Finally, he was a true friend in Christ—loyal and helpful, and a joy to know and love. Concordia has been truly blessed by his presence.

A new partnership between Concordia University, Clark College, Centralia College, and Lower Columbia College was signed on February 17, 2011, to allow Southwest Washington students to apply education credits toward a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at Concordia University. The four college presidents joined a gathering of students, professors, educators, and Head Start advocates for a launch reception and signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU among the four schools will streamline the process for college students who transfer to Concordia’s four-year bachelor’s degree program to continue their education.

The new Southwest Washington early childhood education bachelor’s degree offers Southwest Washington education students a unique opportunity to further develop their passion while also increasing their employment opportunities. The Head Start Reauthorization Act of 2007 requires that at least 50 percent of Head Start teachers have a baccalaureate degree in early childhood education by September 2013. The new degree fulfills that requirement. The program also allows students an opportunity to partake in Concordia’s nationally lauded education program.

$1MillionGiftSupportsexpansion Concordia University received an additional million dollar gift from Boise philanthropist, business, and civic leader George R. White and his wife, Geri White. “George White’s quarter century of service and unwavering dedication to Concordia University’s mission is a tremendous blessing,” remarked Concordia University President Charles Schlimpert. “The White’s are critical contributors to our record expansion - both in terms of the student body as well as the academic programs and infrastructure to support them.” The gift supports the University and the development of Concordia’s future law school in Boise, Idaho. In recognition of this remarkable support, Concordia University will name its new law library the “George R. White Law Library” upon the facility’s completion and opening at 501 Front Street in downtown Boise. The renovated building will seek LEED Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. An earlier multi-million dollar gift from George and Geri White in spring of 2008 marked the first step in Concordia’s expansion plans and helped open the new George R. As a pastor who previously served two campus ministries and who has trained

ministry leaders in 30 states to share God’s love at nearby colleges and universities,

I have seen the profoundly positive impact campus ministry has on college students.

Like much of society around us, campuses across the country are changing rapidly. Therefore, campus ministries, including

those at Christian colleges and universities, also must change in God-pleasing ways to

continue to have a positive impact.

I accepted the call to Concordia University, in part, because it is committed to developing

and implementing new, effective campus ministry models to better serve its students,

faculty, and staff – models that can be shared with other ministries around the

country to help them do the same. You can help us. Please contact me to learn more.

Dear Concordia Universityalumni and friends,

2009. The 74,000 sq. ft. LEED Gold certified building provides a critical intellectual and cultural resource for the campus and local community, already having issued more than 1,300 free library cards to neighbors in our community. George and Geri White reside in Boise, Idaho, where Mr. White is founder and president of National Bark Sales. He joined Concordia University’s Board of Regents in 1992. He served on numerous committees and taskforces, and chaired the Regents during a critical transitional period for the University. White was instrumental in the expansion and development of the Concordia University Foundation Board of Directors and served as chairman of the Board of Directors for nine years.

weidenweberearnsdoctorofletters Concordia University presented an honorary Doctor of Letters degree to Sigrid Weidenweber in December 2010, in recognition of her significant contributions to literature and history. In particular, she is an advocate force for Volga German people and their unique history, and provides ongoing support and promotion of Concordia’s mission and vision. Ms. Weidenweber of Santa Rosa Valley, Calif. is an extraordinary

example of a humanitarian, Christian, and published author who has always been an advocate and spokesperson for people without a voice. Born in Germany in 1941, Ms. Weidenweber remembers firsthand the horrific aftermath of Fascism. At the end of the war, she found herself living under Communism. Both of these totalitarian regimes had a dramatic impact on her life and work. After the Berlin Wall was built, she finally escaped this repressive environment with the help of friends and a French passport. Sigrid holds degrees in medical technology and psychology. Her first book, EscapingtheTwilight, deals with aspects of medical anthropology in an Islamic culture. Her wide range of interests led to the writing of the trilogy, TheVolgaFlowsForever, published by Concordia Press. Concordia University’s Center for Volga German Studies (CVGS), housed in the George R. White Library & Learning Center, owes a great deal of its success to Ms. Weidenweber’s efforts as a speaker, spokesperson, and author. Her work has done much to further friend-raising and fundraising for Concordia and the CVGS. In addition to Concordia and the CVGS, Ms. Weidenweber has shared her gifts and talents with a wide variety of non-profit community benefit organizations.

With the opening of the Concordia University & Community Athletic Complex on the horizon for the fall of 2011, the University has announced the signing of a partnership with Northeast United/Alameda Soccer Club as its primary youth soccer partner. The five-year agreement ensures that Northeast United (NEU) has a home field for games, training and

tournaments. The club will have access to the field at least 500 hours per year over that stretch, with first priority for use of field hours outside of Concordia use. “It’s wonderful that we will build a first-class facility not only for our athletes but to be able to share with our neighbors in the community,” CU Athletic Director Matt English said.

NEU has both competitive, recreational, and development academy soccer programs for youth ages 6 – 14. Current plans involve co-sponsoring charity tournaments, creating community involvement with Concordia athletes serving as coaches for club teams, and increasing involvement with underrepresented groups. Local club coaches with Concordia soccer ties have included Georgie Christensen, Scot Perkins, Carli Godard, and Angelina Turner. The partnership will bring recent Concordia alums back to campus while giving current student-athletes a greater opportunity to get involved in coaching. “This gets to the heart of what Concordia is about,” English said. “It will be a great dynamic to have all levels of soccer playing on this field.”Athletes ranging from six years of age to college students will have the opportunity to call the new field their home turf, creating a stronger bond between the campus, its athletes, and the community. “It will be great to see these kids have the opportunity to be ball boys and girls for top-notch collegiate teams and turn around the next day and play on the very same field,” English said. “Not only will it inspire them to be the best they can be on the soccer pitch, but it will give them early experiences being on a college campus.”

Concordia University and Trillium Family Services convened 37 leaders from the business, nonprofit, education, judicial, and human services sectors in Spring 2011 to consider one key question: How can we better prepare ourselves today to serve Oregon’s most vulnerable families in the future? At the three-day summit, participants examined current conditions that impact Oregon’s most vulnerable families. Participants agreed that those conditions have worsened significantly over time, and they are getting worse. Yet, even a strong economy will not fix the systemic issues plaguing the state’s public, private, and nonprofit safety net for vulnerable populations—major innovation at the institutional level is needed. Summit findings are published in a full report, and participants agreed to continue meeting to carry on the work of creating a better future for Oregon’s most vulnerable families. To read a copy of the full report, contact Jason Hagen at 503-493-6532 or [email protected], or go online at www.cu-portland.edu/Trillium.

Feature Story

“How can I better prepare my students for the

job market when they graduate?”

This question has been on Dr. David Tucker’s mind since

he took over Concordia’s accounting program in 2008.

With unemployment hovering between nine and ten

percent and studies showing employers are hiring fewer

recent college graduates, Tucker is not alone among his

Concordia colleagues.

While there is no guarantee of employment for all of

Concordia’s future alumni, discussions across campus

have professors and administrators devotedly working to

connect and empower students to have a leg up in today’s

job market.

When Kelsey Green ’08 arrived at Concordia in 2006

with her associate’s degree from Southwestern Oregon

Community College, she knew she wanted to be a high

school counselor but didn’t know how to get there. As the

first member of her family to go to college, she didn’t have

anyone to help explain how to turn her academic studies

into the career she wanted…that is, until she met Dr. Jane

Graves Smith, chair of the psychology department.

In their first meeting of what would prove to be a

fruitful relationship, Dr. Smith helped guide Green

towards focusing on psychology with an emphasis on

child and family development. More importantly, she

urged Green to consider graduate school and laid out the

most direct path to help her get there.

Green credits Dr. Smith, along with Dr. Kevin

Simpson, with giving her the confidence to thrive during

her time at Concordia and beyond.

“Going to a small school like Concordia, where I could

develop those relationships, is really what motivated

me to continue my education,” Green said. “It was

definitely a very welcoming, personal relationship with

my professors that made the difference. I knew I could

come to them with any questions or fears about going to

graduate school.”

Green graduated with her bachelor’s degree in

psychology two years later, then started graduate school

two days later. She earned her master’s degree two years

later. Now, she is a counselor at her almamater, Roosevelt

High School in North Portland.

Green’s strong relationships with her professors is

typical of how Concordia students tackle the job market,

according to Megan Bouslaugh, Concordia’s associate

dean for student development. Bouslaugh oversees the

University’s career services and runs seminars, counseling

sessions, and classes aimed at preparing students for

interviews, networking, and anything else that will help

them land a great job.

While students take advantage of the offerings, she

said most students rely on the personal relationships they

build with professors in their majors in order to learn

how to best approach the job market.

“By the time students are in their upper division

classes, they’re really getting connected to the professors

in their field,” she said. “Those professors are helping

students understand what is going to be required of them

in the job market and how to network.”

Networking and getting practical experience in their

respective fields are more important than ever in today’s

hyper-competitive market, according to Bouslaugh.

In response to the growing importance of work

experience, many academic programs now require that all

Concordia graduates have worked or served in their field.

Concordia students are required to learn more

than what their textbooks tell them, whether it’s a

nursing student completing an extensive one-on-one

preceptorship with a nurse in a clinical setting, an

accounting student tackling tax returns, or a Concordia

biology student summer interning at Oregon Health &

Sciences University (OHSU).

“The idea is to get them out of the classroom and get

them doing something related to their field of interest,”

said Dr. Charles Kunert, dean of the College of Theology,

Arts, & Sciences. “Those experiences are really giving our

students advantages in entering graduate schools and

applying for jobs.”

Like many of his fellow professors, Dr. Kunert is closely

involved in helping students find challenging and fulfilling

internships.

Three years ago Dr. Kunert forwarded an application

to student Katy Lawson ’09, then a Concordia biology/

pre-med major. The application was for a summer

research position at OHSU. She landed it, and that

summer’s work helped Lawson realize her true passion

and crystallize her career path.

“It opened doors to see what research was,” she said.

“I was positive that I was going to go straight to medical

school, but when I experienced a lab environment I

thought, ‘hey, I really like this, I can do this.’”

Lawson is currently in a two-year molecular biology

and genetics program at Harvard studying hematology

and oncology. She still plans to apply to medical school,

but she will focus on research. She thanked Dr. Kunert

and her Concordia professors for preparing her so well.

“When you go to a place like Harvard, you kind of

think everyone’s base of knowledge is going to be so high,”

she said. “I was pleasantly surprised that, not only could

I compete, but I was more prepared than a lot of people I

work alongside.”

“Our best compete with the best,” says Dr. David

Tucker, professor of accounting, to whom this comes as no

surprise.

Since taking over the accounting program, Dr. Tucker

has worked to build connections that will lead to fruitful

internships for his students. This year, one of his students

will be interning for Ernst & Young, one of the most

prestigious and difficult to land internships in the country.

18 concordia connection

As valuable as internships and practical experience

are in securing a job, Dr. Kunert—Concordia’s longest

tenured faculty member—suggested that the University’s

emphasis on service leadership is likely even more

important.

Recent articles in the ChronicleofHigherEducation,

TheWallStreetJournal,Businessweekand TheHarvard

BusinessReview have all raised the question of where

tomorrow’s leaders are

going to come from and

suggested that America

is suffering a crisis in

ethical leadership.

While some

universities begin to offer

degrees in leadership,

Concordia’s integrated

focus on developing

servant leader’s figures to

reap rewards for its future

graduates.

“No matter whether

you’re going to be a

scientist, a business

person, a teacher, or a

counselor, fundamentally

our philosophy at

Concordia is that your life

is to be a life of service,”

he explained.

In addition to

developing the leadership

qualities employers are

looking for, service work

and volunteering can be

a good way to get a foot

into difficult-to-come-by jobs.

Bouslaugh said she has seen a definite up-tick in

students looking into a year of service such as Teach for

America, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps. She counsels

interested students to try and match up their service

efforts with their areas of career interest.

“The best thing I have to offer is helping students think

strategically about what they need to do next to get where

they want to go,” she said. “We’re looking for what we can

do to point students in a direction that will help them

achieve career goals.”

Months removed from learning and applying all of

these principles to her own job search, Kelsey Green is

now passing them on to

students as a counselor at

Roosevelt High School.

When Roosevelt students

come for counseling, they

will no doubt see her

Concordia degree hanging

alongside her degrees

from community college,

graduate school, and the

very high school they are

attending.

She said that the

Concordia banners

are hanging there as a

reminder that if they

believe in themselves, rely

on the people who care

about them, and aim high,

they too can achieve their

dreams and work in their

dream jobs.

“Concordia helped me

to think big and think

about how I can give back

to others, how I can serve

others, and what kind of

professional I wanted to

become,” she said. “I realized that I wanted a job where

I was influencing other people’s lives and helping other

people achieve the dream that I had been fortunate

enough to accomplish.”

Following eight weeks of tutoring, 13 third graders from Faubion

School in Northeast Portland, joined their “reading coaches” at a local bookstore for an end of semester field trip. The third graders rode in Concordia University vans and arrived at a local bookstore to shop for their very own books. The third graders, identified and selected by their classroom teachers based on reading needs, received one-on-one reading coaching from Concordia University student-volunteers. The effort was part of

Concordia’s participation in a $200,000 national grant to help struggling readers. The grant, awarded to Elon University in North Carolina, by Switzerland-based Oak Foundation, was spearheaded locally by Concordia University College of Education Professor Dr. Lynn Keyne-Michaels. “Third grade is a critical time to develop solid reading and comprehension skills that are important for students’ future academic success,” said Dr. Keyne-

Michaels. “Concordia University was thrilled to partner with our neighborhood public school, Faubion, to provide an extra boost to these emerging readers.” Concordia master of arts in teaching candidate Jackie Blair was one of a dozen students who volunteered to serve as a reading coach. “Being a reading coach was

empowering for me as a learner, to be studying with a child one-on-one to help them get comfortable in the language,” said Blair. “I learned how much adults can benefit from spending one-on-one time with a child, and also how much the children thrive with the care and attention they receive from an adult mentor.”

“Our professors, Lynn Keyne-Michaels and Jane Koivisto, served as great resources to us (reading coaches) along the way. They were our ‘master teachers,’ available to answer questions and to bounce ideas off of, making sure our third graders made progress.” First, the reading coaches received training on how to support young readers. Then, once a week, the third graders were escorted by their reading tutors from Faubion School to the adjacent George R. White Library & Learning Center and the Jody Thurston Northwest Center for Children’s Literature, where they were provided one-on-one reading support. Each third grader participated in ongoing assessments to determine their reading progress. Another important component of the grant involved parents. The third graders’ parents were invited and welcomed to attend and participate. Several parents applied for Concordia University library cards and plan to bring their children to the library in the future. Any community member can receive a free library card by bringing their ID to Concordia University’s George R. White Library & Learning Center. More than 1,300 free library cards have already been issued to members of the local community since the library opened in summer 2009.

Faubion School teacher Reshawn Brown claps her hands to get the attention of 20 kindergartners. It’s about 10 a.m., time for the children to clean up for “Brain Break.” As they settle into stations to draw and play with blocks, one pig-tailed 6-year-old slides to the edge of a table where a Concordia University student sits waiting. Melissa Lum, 19, opens a picture book and begins reading. For the child who follows Lum’s finger across the pages, the benefits of this one-on-one attention are priceless. She gets personalized instruction and a mentor, an invaluable asset in any school, but especially important at Faubion, a public school with an 80 percent poverty rate. Meanwhile, Ms. Brown, a kindergarten teacher without an assistant, can focus on other students. In a hyped-up world of test scores and expectations, where Brown says “kindergarten is the new first grade,” extra hands in the classroom make a difference.

concordia’sBasketballprograminstilling the Necessary Work ethic

For players in the National Basketball Association, road

games can mean flights to Milwaukee or Oklahoma City. For former Concordia men’s basketball player Alex Hartman ’07, road games mean traveling around Asia and Europe and visiting places most Americans will never have a chance to see. “Basketball has helped me see the world in a way I never would have imagined possible,” Hartman said. Hartman has starred for Indonesia in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Basketball League as a two-time Most Valuable Player. He has also played abroad in Germany, Japan, and Romania since graduating from Concordia. He credits the CU basketball program with instilling the work ethic necessary to reach this point. “Concordia recruited several players at my same position,” Hartman said. “My only choice was to go into my first year of college and try to work twice as hard. I worked every day in the weight room and tried my hardest in the classroom.” Hartman entered college as a 6'4," 170 pound freshman, and he found that the pressures of college could be difficult to handle. “College was very physical, very fast, and totally overwhelmed me,” Hartman said. “It took extra time in the gym and the weight room to turn into a team contributor and go-to guy for the Cavaliers. Coach (CU head coach Brad Barbarick) constantly pushed me to work harder than I ever had before. By my senior year, Coach was a father figure to me and the basketball team was my family.”

Barbarick called Hartman “the most focused player that I’ve had. He had a relentless work ethic.” It was this focus, aided by continued growth that allowed Hartman to reach 6'7," 215 pounds by his senior season, that allowed him to improve each season and finish his CU career as one of the top players in the University's history. Hartman ranks third in CU history with 1,442 career points and 1,104 field goal attempts. He ranks fourth in blocks (89) and minutes (2,934) and is tied for fourth with 115 games played. “Alex made a goal for himself very early on in his college career that he wanted to play professionally,” Barbarick said. “He did everything in his power to pursue that, from changing his diet to his weight-lifting habits. He was one of the best athletes in the conference by the time he was a senior.” “I felt that basketball was my calling,” Hartman said.

“I knew I had the skills to play at the next level. I just really didn’t know how to break into the market.” He began his professional career in the International Basketball League (IBL), playing for the Vancouver Volcanoes semi-pro team, a job that “hardly paid the bills.” Hartman was not content and pushed for a bigger opportunity.

He entered his name into a pre-draft camp for China

basketball. “I knew that I had to reach a larger base of people, including

agents and coaches,” Hartman said. Among 250 camp attendees, only 20 were selected to travel to Hawaii for the official

China basketball draft. Hartman was the youngest

player to receive an invitation, although he was

not selected to play in China. His first overseas opportunity came soon after, in Stuttgart, Germany, where he played for

four months and led his team in points, rebounds, and assists. At

the conclusion of the season, he returned home and again planned to play with the Volcanoes.

Two games into the Volcanoes’ season, however, Hartman received his big break – an invitation to play for Indonesia in the ASEAN Basketball League, which included teams from several Southeast Asian countries. It was there that Hartman began to make his mark, winning the tournament MVP and leading his team to its first-ever championship. Between seasons in Indonesia, Hartman played in the Romanian League, traveling around Eastern Europe as his team finished third in the league. After returning to Indonesia for another season, Hartman led the league in scoring and finished third in assists as his team reached the

championship game. Local fans began to

take note of his success. “That was the season when my fan base grew tremendously in Asia,” Hartman said. “I was able to travel to many countries, take vacations to Bali and meet a lot of future connections.” Hartman has since played with the KL Dragons, Malaysia’s top

team, earning MVP honors and leading his team to the league championship. He then flew to Japan to play with the Vancouver Volcanoes on an international tour before again returning to Malaysia

for another opportunity in the ASEAN Basketball League. Basketball has offered Hartman the chance to play the game he loves, while seeing the world. Once his career is over, Hartman plans to use his business administration and marketing degree to work with NIKE, but, until then, he will pursue his next opportunity in the game. The experience has required sacrifice and few guarantees of job security, but Hartman says it has all been worth it. “It has been very hard for me to be away for such long periods of time from my friends and family back home,” Hartman said.“But I would not trade it for anything.”

At the conference level, eight CU players earned all-CCC honors. Orr was named the CCC’s Defensive Player of the Year by a vote of the conference coaches. Sophomore Adrienne Lommasson was named Newcomer of the Year and Grant Landy shared Coach of the Year honors. Orr, Peterson, Hendrickson,

and Tebbs also received CCC first-team honors. Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Talbutt, sophomore defender Lauryn Helmers, senior midfielder Sami Andrews, and sophomore forward Alex Thomas were named to the second team.

Men’SSOccer After falling to Concordia-Irvine 3-1 in its season-opening contest, the 2010 men’s soccer team embarked on a 16-1-1 stretch that featured 14 shutouts, allowing their opponents just four goals. The 14 shutouts set a new single-season University record en route to a CCC championship.

Concordia’s only loss during the conference season was a bitter 1-0 defeat at the hands of cross town rival Warner Pacific College. The Cavaliers would avenge that loss in the conference championship game with a 2-1 comeback victory. Head coach Dan Birkey earned his 300th career win on October 23rd when the Cavaliers defeated Northwest University 1-0. Birkey became just the 15th NAIA men’s soccer coach to attain 300 career victories. Following the conference championship, the Cavaliers traveled to Liberty, Mo. for the opening round of the NAIA national tournament. Making their fifth appearance at the tournament, the Cav’s season came to an end in the opening round as they fell 3-1 to seventh-seeded William Jewell College. The 2010 season provided accolades to a number of individuals on the team. Facundo Dipascuale was named CCC Player of the Year and seven Cavaliers earned all-conference recognition. Shaunovan Wilson earned Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Dipascuale and Wilson went on to be named to the NAIA All-American Honorable Mention list.

wOMen’SSOccer The women’s soccer team opened its season with 11 straight shutouts and climbed to a No. 1 ranking in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Coaches’ Poll for the first time in the program’s history. The Cavaliers maintained its ranking throughout the season, remaining the only undefeated team in the country to earn the No. 1 seed at the national tournament. After capturing the team’s 11th straight Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) crown, CU went on to win the CCC tournament championship. The Cavs earned a tense 2-1 win over long- time rival Simon Fraser University on November 20 to advance to the NAIA national championships in Decatur, Ala. Concordia saw its undefeated season come to an end in game one in Decatur, falling to the eventual national runner-up Hastings College, 2-1. Junior defender Brittany Orr highlighted a group of four CU players who earned NAIA All-American Honors. Orr was named to the first team for the second straight season, while fellow junior defender Jenna Peterson earned second-team

VOlleYBall In her second season, head coach Melanie Hambelton and the Cavaliers headed in the right direction. Following a 16-10 record in 2009, Hambelton guided the Cavs to nearly 20 wins in 2010 with a 19-9 overall mark and a third-place result in the CCC standings. Opening the year at a rugged three-day tournament in Montana with a 1-4 record against top-ranked teams provided experience for the young CU squad. They would go on to win 18 of the next 22 matches. Going 14-4 in league play with their only losses against top-25 teams Southern Oregon University

and College of Idaho, the Cavaliers earned the No. 3 seed in the CCC tournament, where they battled the No. 13-ranked College of Idaho Yotes to a 26-24 loss in the opening set before being swept. Capping a stellar career, senior hitter Raluca Dinca became just the third Cavalier to record 1,000 career digs and kills. By the end of the season, Dinca found her way into the top 10 in several all-time CU lists as she finished No. 3 on the school’s all-time kill chart and No. 4 all-time in digs. In addition, fellow senior Erika Doremus rounded out her four- year career in the Navy & White rankings as No. 9 all-time with 746 kills. Dinca went on to become one of three CU players to earn first-team all-CCC honors and was also named to the AVCA NAIA All-Northwest Region team. Freshman setter Lindsay Mangan and junior middle blocker Clair Thiel joined Dinca on the CCC first-team, with Doremus receiving honorable mention. Mangan was named the conference’s ‘Newcomer of the Year.’

crOSScOuntrY The 2010 season proved to be another groundbreaking year for the cross country programs. Alice Taylor earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year, leading the

women to their first ever CCC championship and a CU-best eighth-place finish at the NAIA national championships. Marcus Nelson became the third Cavalier cross country All-American at the national meet, helping Concordia finish 25th nationally. Taylor and Nelson opened the season on a strong note, posting the top individual times at the Lewis & Clark Pioneer Open on September 11th where the men’s and

women’s squads placed second overall. The following week, the CU women won the CCC Preview, paced by Taylor in second, Samantha Robert in fourth, Junia Limage in sixth, and Lauren Moran in seventh. The men took second behind Eastern Oregon University in the same meet. November 6th brought the CCC Championships, and Taylor’s second-place finish helped the Cavaliers break through for their first conference championship after runner-up finishes each of the last two years. Nelson placed 15th, helping the men to place fourth at the conference meet, behind three schools that would place in the top 13 squads at the national meet two weeks later.

On November 20th Concordia co-hosted the NAIA national meet at Fort Vancouver, Vancouver, Wash. for the second consecutive year. Taylor’s 19th-place finish was the second-highest in CU history, behind only her own 13th-place finish at last year’s national meet. Nelson also posted the second-best finish for CU, with his 21st-place rank behind only Erick Burck’s sixth-place finish at the 2008 national meet.

record for points in a game. He connected on 14 of 22 shots from beyond the three-point line to establish a CCC record for most three-pointers in a game, a total that ranks second in all of NAIA Division II history. Hiebert came off the bench to score 24 points in each half, finishing 17-of-27 from the field overall. He would go on to become Concordia’s all-time leader in career three-pointers.

Men’SBaSketBall After a tough midseason stretch threatened Concordia’s spot in the CCC tournament, the Cavaliers finished the regular season on a 6-4 run to clinch the final seed in the tourney. A loss to top-seed Oregon Institute of Technology in the CCC quarterfinals ended the season, as the Cavs finished the 2010-11 campaign with a 12-18 record. Junior point guard Gage Aker and freshman forward, Adam Herman, earned first-team All-CCC honors. Aker led the conference with 4.5 assists per game in conference contests and Herman posted a .665 shooting percentage in conference games, second-best in the CCC. In all games played, Herman led all of NAIA Division II with a .641 shooting percentage. Aker posted the first conference triple-double in three years on December 30th, when he tallied 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in a game against Eastern Oregon University. He nearly pulled off the feat again in a home contest against College of Idaho on January 28, falling just short with 21 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists. Dustin Hiebert posted one of the greatest games in Concordia history on January 18th against Multnomah University, when the senior forward scored 48 points to establish a school

wOMen’SBaSketBall Picked to finish sixth in the conference pre-season poll, the Cavaliers clinched a share of the CCC regular season championship and won the conference tournament title to earn Concordia’s second-ever trip to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. But those accomplishments alone would not prompt more than four million people worldwide to view a clip of a CU basketball game. Senior forward Danielle Clauson finished her prominent Concordia career with flair, inbounding the ball off the back of a defender to sink the game-

winning shot with less than a second remaining in the CCC Championship game against the College of Idaho. Clauson’s shot earned nationwide acclaim, as the video made it to ESPN and was listed as the nation’s ‘Top Play of the Day.’ Local news affiliates in the Portland area – as well as in Sioux City, Iowa, home of the NAIA National Tournament – produced features about the shot and Concordia’s trip to the tournament. As special as that shot may have been, Clauson was no one-shot wonder in her time at CU. She finished the season with 664 points, the second-highest total in school history, was named CCC Player of the Year, and is Concordia’s first-ever first-team NAIA All-American. Clauson leaves Concordia after four years, as the third-most prolific scorer in school history. Concordia reached No. 15 in the national rankings and won 11 games in a row at one point in the season. Junior guard Rachel Scarpelli established a new single-season school record for three-pointers and also became the career leader in three-pointers at Concordia. Junior point guard Courtney May was named CCC Newcomer of the Year and earned first-team all-CCC honors. She posted a triple-double during the November 23rd win over George Fox University with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists against the Bruins. The Cavaliers picked up a six-seed in the 32-team NAIA tournament, but fell to third-seed, Black Hills State University, 66-59 in the tourney’s opening round.

Concordia’s athletic trainers, Emily Kosderka and Scott Crawford, have been a part of thousands of Cavalier

events and reveled in countless championships and titles. But just as they are among the first to celebrate the good times, they are also among the first on the scene when tragedy strikes. Kosderka and Crawford have not only handled, but have thrived in their challenging roles for a combined 16 years at Concordia, serving as the athletic trainers for more than 250 student-athletes in 15 varsity sports. As good as they are at bandaging, icing, and taping up Concordia’s student-athletes, what sets this pair apart is how they treat athletes beyond the physical wounds, injuries, and what the fans see from the bleachers. “The athletic trainer-player relationship is very important,” women’s soccer head coach Grant Landy said. “Our athletic trainers have done a fabulous job creating an environment where players feel comfortable. The players can trust in the treatment and rehabilitation, and that trust plays a huge role in any successful team.” Their athletic training headquarters, located at the intersection of corridors in the heart of the gymnasium,

has become the place where student-athletes come to talk about other concerns related to being an overwhelmed college student. Kosderka and Crawford help students balance the books and the bruises. “We often joke that about 80 percent of what we do is from the neck up,” Kosderka said. “We enjoy that critical piece. Whether it’s an injury that will keep someone out for days, weeks, or a full season, a lot of what we do is goal-setting. Coaches teach lessons through losses. We teach through preventing and overcoming injuries or setbacks.” Both athletic trainers agree that the toughest part of the job is seeing a season-ending injury, especially if the student-athlete is a senior, as it often means the end of a career and the end of an identity that this person has carried for so long. However, treating the day-to-day nagging aches and pains can get just as complicated. It’s under those circumstances when other parties—from parents to peers—offer what they think is useful advice.

“The first question we get asked by a student-athlete is ‘When can I get back out there?’” Crawford said. “Every step along the way, we are doing all that we can to get them back on the field, while staying keenly aware of what is best long-term for the student.” Whether it’s an athlete overexerting to come back to competition too early or an athlete lingering on the sidelines when they appear to be healthy, athletic trainers have a subtle sense of when something is off-kilter. They can be tending to a player on the opposite end of a basketball court and blindly see an awkward fall due to the sudden hush of the crowd. They take an immediate glance and within seconds they can make early assessments that can make the difference between icing or a trip to the emergency room.

“There is a special energy on game day, but we hope to be nice and bored during the game,” Kosderka said with a smile. “Part of our job is to be ready for anything and to control the chaos when someone goes down.” They hope to take in the match like a typical fan, only with better seats. But once the final seconds tick away, their role clicks back into caretaker mode and soon the line of competitors make their way over for post-game treatment. While the games and the seasons go by, many of these same student-athletes find their way back as graduates. And when they do, the talk always turns to sharing those same stories about the best of times and the worst of times.

It seems like every time we open a paper, check the news, or get an email alert, the world of work is painted with a dismal brush. In recent years, we have seen historical levels of unemployment and under-employment. In this context, career planning has become more of a challenge as students and families expect that a college education will lead to an immediate job—preferably one that pays well. Statistics from the federal government state that current college graduates will change careers (not just jobs) five to seven times in a forty-five year career. This means that many people will have as many as fifteen different jobs. All of these numbers can be a little scary, and some are left wondering about the value of an undergraduate degree. Against this cultural backdrop one might ask the question: “Why pursue a liberal arts-based education?” A liberal arts-based education from Concordia actually prepares students precisely for this unsettled future. We are about educating, training, and mentoring students who are thoughtful, mature, self-starters who enter the world of work as servant leaders to transform society. In fact, our mission statement audaciously states this very fact. We aim to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and worldview that will enable them not only to succeed in a fast changing world but to thrive in this environment. Every faculty and staff member at CU works to develop Christian leaders who will transform society. We infuse the idea of servant leadership in and out of the classroom. Academically, we seek to transform our students into life-long leaders who possess the requisite skills to shift adroitly to whatever new opportunities present themselves. Many of our professors have succeeded in the working world and translate these experiences into engaging curricula for our students. Every major at Concordia is designed around a

hands-on, intensive, and practical capstone project, whether it be an internship, practicum, or research-based thesis. Every major is erected upon the foundation of a liberal arts education which compels the learner to explore their values and beliefs, develop their own worldview, reject the idea of intellectual limitation, open avenues of critical inquiry, and foster a nimble mind which will enable them to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world. Concordia exposes students to a life of service and community engagement to which faith-based institutions are so uniquely called. Students learn through service to others, and this component is interwoven through the curriculum in the classroom. Moreover, these service events expose students to a world beyond the walls of academia. Many students translate these experiences into careers of service in the fields of education, social work, nursing, non-profit leadership, etc. Both their academic and co-curricular experiences prepare them for a multiplicity of approaches to life beyond Concordia. The Concordia experience prepares our students as leaders who apply their knowledge, skills, and servant hearts to bring a healing salve to a broken world. The skills of nurture, grace, and humility that are internalized through the journey of Lutheran education serve our graduates well as they become the next generation of professionals who will transform our society.
