Orgeln talar många språk och är ett storslaget internationellt instrument. Man kan inte tänka sig musikhistorien i Europa utan ”Instrumentens drottning”. Och knappast något annat instrument bjuder på så mycket av kosmos, kombinerar rymd och klang, rationalitet och känsla, det uttalade och det outtalade.

Orgelns inflytande sträcker sig från antiken, via tidig klostermusik till kyrkor, konsertsalar och stadshus. Och orgeln har även haft en viktig roll i biografer på stumfilmernas tid – i Stockholm finns Skandiaorgeln bevarad i en experimen-tell kärnreaktorhall med katedralliknande akustik. Arkitektoniskt är det unika med varje orgel lätt att se när man beskådar olika orgelfasader, men klangerna är minst lika unika. Vid festivalen blir det goda tillfällen både att se och framfö-rallt lyssna.

Welcome back to OrganSpace Stockholm!The organ speaks in many languages and is a truly international instrument, and the history of European music is hardly imaginable without the contribution of the “Queen of Instruments.” Her influence extends from the earliest monastic music in churches (in fact, even much earlier than that) to concert and town halls and even cinemas - and in Stockholm most spectacularly inside an experimental nuclear reactor hall with cathedral-like acoustics.

The uniqueness of each single instrument can be easily grasped by looking at the various organ facades, but this singularity is even more important on a sonic level. There fore, OrganSpace Stockholm extends a friendly invitation and a unique chance to stop by often and listen to the many recitals featuring a great spectrum of instrumental queens. Hardly any other instrument offers so much cosmos, a so rich combination of space and sound, rationality and emotion, and both the heard and the unheard.

Titulaire of the grand organ at Saint-Eustache Church in Paris, Organist in Residence at Maison de la Radio (Radio France Concert Hall) and recently appointed Harmony Tutor at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP). Thomas Ospital is a young artist who has quickly earned a place amongst the world’s finest concert organists.

A laureate of several competitions, he was awarded First Prize at the 2009 International Competition of Organ in Saragossa, Spain, the Duruflé-Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2012 International Chartres Competition, and Second Prize at the 2013 International Xavier Darasse Competition in Toulouse. In May of 2014, he took the Grand Prize Jean Louis Florentz and the Audience Prize at the International Organ Competition of Angers under the direction of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. And most recently, in November 2014,he was awarded Second Prize, Audience Prize and the Florentz Prize at the International Chartres Competition.

Mr. Ospital is equally at home performing as a solo recitalist and with choir or

orchestra. He is also eager to perpetuate the art of improvisation in all of its forms, including the accompaniment of silent films. His performances have taken him throughout Europe, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Switzerland and Holland. He has also performed in Russia and in North America, where in 2012 he served for six months as Young Artist in Residence at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis King of France in New Orleans, USA.

Born in 1990, Thomas Ospital began his musical studies at the Conservatoire Maurice Ravel in Bayonne, France, completing his studies with Esteban Landart in 2008 (Mention Très bien à l’unanimité). From 2008 until 2015, he was a student at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris where he earned five First Place prizes in organ, improvisation, harmony, counterpoint and fugue. His teachers at the Paris Conservatoire included Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, Thierry Escaich, Philippe Lefebvre, László Fassang, Isabelle Duha, Pierre Pince and Jean-François Zygel.Mr. Ospital currently serves as Titular Organist of the largest pipe organ in

France; the Grand Organ at St. Eustache in Paris. He took up the post in 2015 when he succeeded Jean Guillou. Mr. Ospital is also the newly appointed Organist in Residence at the Maison de la Radio France where he presides over the new concert hall organ built by Grenzing.

Richard Hills is one of the very few musicians truly to have bridged and mastered the divide between the world of the classical organ and that of the theatre organ. Having commenced classical organ studies under William Whitehead at Rochester Cathedral, he became Organ Scholar at Exeter College Oxford, studying with David Sanger. Further organ scholarships followed at Portsmouth Cathedral, where he studied with Rosemary Field and at Westminster Abbey.

He now pursues a freelance career and is Organist at St Mary’s, Bourne Street, London. His career in the theatre organ world has been equally prestigious. He has numerous prizes and awards to his credit, both in the UK and in the USA, where he was named by ‘Organist of the Year’ in 2010 by the American Theatre Organ Society. He has appeared many times on national and international TV and Radio, including solo appearances on pro-

grammes as diverse as Radio 3 Choral Evensong and Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night, and has several recording credits. His most recent solo recording was made on the magnificent dual-purpose Compton organ of Southampton’s Guildhall.

When not on the bench, Richard serves as Musical Advisor to the Cinema Organ Society and maintains a practical interest in organ building.

Giovanna Fornari obtained her diploma and subsequently her second-level degree in organ and organ composition under the guidance of Francesco Tasini, in the Conservatories of Parma and Ferrara. She also took a diploma in harpsichord, and went on in her study of basso continuo and the French repertoire at the Conservatory of Toulouse, obtaining the “Premier Prix d’orgue” with the“Congratulations of the jury” and the “Prix de Perfectionnement” in harpsichord under the guidance of Jan Willem Jansen. Then she specialised in the romanticrepertoire for organ at the Hochschule of Bern. Moreover she earned a degree Cum laude at the Faculty of Arts (musicological course) of the University of Parma.

Her first work (composed by her at the age of fifteen), “Tanzteather project” for synthesizer, dancer, and electronic equipment, was selected to be performed at the “Welt Musik Tage” Festival of Contemporary Music of Frankfurt, Germany, together with works by Luca Lombardi, Mario Garuti and Marcella Mandanici.

Giovanna Fornari is also working on an innovative project that uses the exploitation of the timbres of ancient organs in the field of modern techniques of composition and sound research.

Since 2007, she is the artistic director of the Accademia Organistica of Parma, and is furthering the rediscovery of the historical organs of the city, the organisation of guided tours, and the realisation of the Festival Organistico Città di Parma, in close collaboration with the Verdi Festival.

Giovanna Fornari collaborates actively with several record companies as a harpsichordist and organist, both as a soloist and as a basso-continuo and chamber-music performer. She is the official organist of the monumental Tamburini 1928 organ of the Abbatial Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma. She is professor of harpsichord at the A. Peri Musical Institute of Reggio Emilia.

Ryan Kennedy

Ryan Kennedy was an aspiring physicist and amateur pianist when he first heard the organ at age fifteen, and was fascinated by the prospect of playing all his favorite music on a new and fascinating instrument. Two years later, he was accepted to Juilliard as an organ major.

Since then, he has become an increasingly busy concert organist with an increasingly international concert diary. A background in piano and opera accompaniment has manifested itself in the form of many transcriptions, both of virtuosic piano works like Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor, and of orchestral music like Strauss’ Alpine Symphony and Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. Ryan’s recordings have been broadcast on NPR, WQXR, and BBC3, most notably his interpretation of Milton Babbitt’s rarely-played Manifold Music.

Competition credits include the American Guild of Organists’ Regional Competition (winner), the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition (semi-finalist), and the AGO’s NYACOP (semi-finalist).

He has recently attained a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School, studying with Paul Jacobs, and is currently a doctoral student at Yale School of Music. He is the associate organist at Christ Church Bronxville in New York.

Tomas Willstedt, organist at the Cathedral of Lund 1976-2016, has been active as an artist and teacher in Sweden as well as abroad. He has played more than 1000 concerts at Lund Cathedral.

In 1992 he won the International Organ Improvisation Competition in Haarlem, Holland, after that followed invitations from all over the world. Willstedt is also active as a composer with the intention to put aside the established aesthetics and academic stereotypes.

Furthermore he has written a textbook on improvisation.

Tomas Willstedt var organist i Lunds domkyrka mellan 1976 och 2016, och han har en gedigen karriär som lärare och konstnär både i Sverige och utomlands. År 1992 vann han första priset i prestigefulla Internationella orgelimprovisationstävlingen i Haarlem, Holland. Tomas Willstedt är även aktiv som tonsättare och har skrivit flera böcker och artiklar om orgelimprovisation.

Péter Kováts was born in Pécs, Hungary, in 1979. He started his musical studies in Nagyatád at the age of five. During this early time he won several prizes on regional competitions.

His first organ teacher was József Kárpáti from 1992 to 1994, thanks to his preparation he won two special prizes in the 1994 National Organ Competition in Salgótarján, including the one for the best Bach performance. In 1998, he was admitted to the Organ performing artist and Organ teacher faculty at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he graduated with honours in 2004.

From 2004 to 2008, he did postgraduate and improvisation studies in France with Pierre Mea in Reims and Pierre Pincemaille in Paris, acquired an unanimously awarded Gold Medal in improvisation in 2008.He achieved significant success in several international competitions: In 2007 as finalist in improvisation at Paris Interna-tional Organ Competition, and in 2009 as the only participant in both categories interpretation and improvisation in the Competition in St. Albans, England.

In the Liszt Memorial Year in 2011, he won the International Bach-Liszt Organ Competition in Weimar, Germany.Audiences have had the opportunity to listen to his performances in the major Hungarian churches and concert halls on numerous occasions.

In summer of 2010, he played at the inauguration ceremonies of the organ in Zamárdi, built in French Baroque style.He also gave concerts abroad as in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Slovakia, and France. His 2012 concert in Nuremberg was recorded and broadcasted by Radio Bavaria.

He composed film music, too, for the nature film series Jelfák (Sign Trees) by the famous cinematographer Tamás Szabados in 2002, which was shown several times on Duna Television. Since summer 2012, Péter Kováts has been the organist of the Primatial Cathedral of Esztergom beside István Baróti, and became his appointed successor in 2014.

Dominik Susteck (born in 1977) studied Church music at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Cologne, and Saarbrücken with an emphasis on music theory and composition. He completed his education with a concert degree in organ. He was held a lecturer’s position for music theory and organ at the School for Sacred Music in Essen, which he used for the dissemination and inclusion of contemporary music in church activities. He has also served as a lecturer at the Folkwang University in Essen, the Rob-ert Schumann Hochschule in Düssel-dorf, and at the Franz Liszt Hochschule in Weimar. Of particular importance to him is work with young people, with whom he has worked on projects dedi-cated to compositions by György Ligeti, Kurt Schwitters, John Cage, and Terry Riley, among others.

Since 2007, he has been the successor to Peter Bares as composer and organ-ist at St. Peter’s Art Station in Cologne, where his improvisation concerts have attracted particular notice. Susteck has played numerous premiere perfor-mances of works by composers includ-ing Peter Bares, Erik Janson, Johannes

S. Sistermanns, Stefan Froleyks, and Peter Köszeghy. His concerts have been broad-cast by various German radio networks (among them Deutschlandfunk, WDR, and Saarland Radio).

Dominik Susteck is the director of the International Organfestival “orgel-mix-turen” and has been guest at festivals for contemporary organ music in Berlin and Frankfurt. As a composer and organist,

he has been awarded a number of prizes (among them the first prize in the Aeolian Trio Composition Competition in 2004, the Klaus Martin Ziegler Prize in 2008 in Kassel, and the first prize in composition in the “organ plus” competition at the music conservatory in Mainz in 2010. In 2012, he was awarded a prize for con-temporary sacred music in Schwäbisch Gmünd, and most recently the German Record Critics’ Award.

Wolfgang Zerer, born 1961 in Passau, received his first organ lessons from cathedral organist Walther Schuster. He studied in Vienna, organ with Michael Radulescu, harpsichord with Gordon Murray, conducting with Karl Österreicher and church music. Further studies led him to Amsterdam where he studied harpsichord for Ton Koopman and organ for Ludger Lohmann in Stuttgart.

He has won prizes at various organ competitions, e.g. in Bruges and Innsbruck. After teaching assignments in Stuttgart and Vienna he was appointed professor for organ at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in 1989.

Jean-Pierre Leguay served as titular organist at Notre-Dame-des-Champs in Paris from 1961 to 1984. In 1985, he was appointed titular organist at Notre-Dame de Paris until he became titular organist emeritus four years ago. He has won many awards for organ, improvisation and composition, e.g. at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, in addition to international competitions in Lyon, Nice, Haarlem, and Erding.

In addition to his work as a teacher at different conservatories in Dijon and Paris, Jean-Pierre Leguay’s numerous recordings span repertory from the 17th- to the 21st century. Constantly exploring the “alchemy of sound,” the composer’s catalog comprises more than seventy works for various instrumental and vocal ensembles, including Etoilé (harpsichord and quintet), Sève (alto saxophone and piano), Souffle (fourteen instruments), Azur (piano), Aube (organ and chamber orchestra), Cendres d’ailes (tenor and piano) and a string trio and quartet, Jubilus (six instruments), Sonnantes (piano for four hands).

He became “Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur” in 2013.

Christoffer Holgersson har diplomutbildning i kördirige-ring vid Kungl. Musikhögskolan i Stockholm. Han har jobbat som musiklärare vid Adolf Fredriks musikklasser, som dirigent för Adolf Fredriks Gosskör samt Stockholms Kammarkör. Han är för nuvarande kyrkomusiker i Adolf Fredriks församling.

Kören grundades år 2000 som en ungdomskör och är idag en blandad kör som består av drygt 30 korister i åldrarna 18 – 35 år. Kören är knuten till Adolf Fredriks församling och sedan år 2011 är Christoffer Holgersson körens dirigent och konstnärlige ledare. Koristerna kommer från olika musikaliska sammanhang och musi-ken är för många av medlemmarna huvudintresset eller yrkesin-riktningen. Utöver sin verksamhet inom Adolf Fredriks församling har kören genom åren medverkat vid internationella körtävlingar och vunnit många priser. Senast kören tävlade var i april 2018 då kören vann Fleischmann International Trophy Competition när de medverkade i Cork International Choral Festival, Irland.

Per-Ove Larsson är organist i Adolf Fredriks kyrka sedan 30 år tillbaka och bedriver en stor konsertverksamhet. Tidigare i år tilldelades han S:ta Ceci-liapriset, och i motiveringen framhålls särskilt att Per-Ove lever musik! Priset syftar till att främja musiken i Stockholms stifts församlingar.

One of America’s leading concert organists, David Higgs is also Chair of the Organ Department at the Eastman School of Music. He performs extensively throughout the United States and abroad, and has inaugurated many important new instruments including St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Vienna and St. Albans Cathedral in England. For over twenty years he performed annual holiday organ concerts at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco and at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. His performances with numerous ensembles have included the San Francisco Symphony, the Orpheus Ensemble, Chanticleer, and the Empire Brass.

Mr. Higgs performs, teaches, andadjudicates at festivals and competitions throughout the world, including the Leipzig Bach Competition and the Gottfried Silbermann Competition in Freiberg. In England he has appeared several times at the Oundle- and St. Albans Festival, in France at the Xavier Darasse Competition in Toulouse; and in Japan at several venues. In 2018 he performed several concerts in France, including a solo recital at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris,

and was a guest teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. His performances for colleagues include national, regional and pedagogy conventions of the American Guild of Organists, as well as national conventions in the US.

A native of New York City, Mr. Higgs held his first position as a church organist at age ten; as a teenager, he performed classical music as well as rock, gospel, and soul music. He earned the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at the Manhattan School of Music, and the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. He was Director of Music and Organist at Park Avenue Christian Church, and later Associate Organist of the Riverside Church, where he also conducted the Riverside Choral Society. After moving to San Francisco in 1986, he became Director of Music and Organist at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley, Director of Church Music Studies at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, and Organist/Choir Director at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco.

In addition to his significant performing career, Mr. Higgs has distinguished himself

as a pedagogue. He was appointed to the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music upon graduation from that institution, and has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music since 1992. His students have won prizes in prestigious international competitions, and hold im-portant positions in leading academic and religious institutions.

Stefan Therstam är professor och ämnesansvarig i orgel vid Kungliga Musikhögskolan i Stockholm där han undervisar sedan 1985 med improvisation som specialitet. 1988 vann han den legendariska Internationella orgelimprovisationstävlingen i Haarlem, Holland.

Sedan 1999 är han or ganist in Engelbrektskyrkan i Stockholm. Stefan konserterar regel bundet inom och utom landet, har internationella juryuppdrag, föreläser samt medverkar i radio och TV.

Kira Lankinen är diplomorganist och har utbildat sig i solistiskt orgel spel vid Sibeliusakademin i Helsingfors för professor Kari Jussila samt kyrkomusik vid Högskolan för Scen och Musik vid Göteborgs Universitet där hon avlade organistexamen (Master of Church Music) år 2007.

Kira har spelat solokonserter förutom i Finland, Sverige och Nor ge även i Polen och Tyskland samt arbetat som kyrkomusiker i Sve rige, Norge och Finland. Sedan september 2016 arbetar Kira Lankinen som musikkonsulent i Västerås stift och är ledamot i Svenska orgelsällskapet samt Svenska kyrkans musikråd.
