Department of Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, University of Delhi is one of the

prominent institutions working in the field of Lifelong Learning & Extension. It has its

beginning in 1976 as a cell & was upgraded in 1982 as the Centre for Adult, Continuing

Education & Extension. It became a full-fledged department in 1985 under the aegis of Faculty

of Social Sciences. It offers Masters degree in Lifelong Learning & Extension, M. Phil, Ph. D,

various short term courses along with a number of field interventions like Community Learning

Centers for different vulnerable groups.

The University-Grants Commission in its landmark decision in 2007 issued the new guidelines

on Lifelong Learning & Extension (2007-2012) in lieu of Adult, Continuing Education &

Extension in higher education. Lifelong Learning has been considered as an important milestone

of learning society and recognized as an important programme of the Government of India. The

micro-analysis of the UGC Guideline published during the XI Plan specified five selected areas

of intervention in the University-system. The components selected are as follows:

1. Teaching, Training and Research

2. Lifelong Learning/Continuing Education

3. Extension including student Counselling & Career-Guidance

4. Material Development

5. Population Education

University of Delhi is dedicatedly working to effectively promote lifelong learning since

decades. Various other Indian universities, such as University of Pune and Tata Institute of

Social Sciences (TISS) also organized workshops to strengthen Lifelong Learning in India.

Initiatives taken by University of Delhi for Professional Development in

Lifelong Learning & Extension

The Department of Adult, Continuing Education & Extension of the University of Delhi

organized Two-Day International Workshop on Professional Development in Lifelong Learning

& Extension. The Chief-Guest Padmashri, Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor, University

of Delhi, stated that Adult & Lifelong Learning should be an integral approach of the university.

Dr. Alisher Umarov, Chief of Education, UNESCO apprised about the status of education in

South Asian Countries.

During the workshop, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor inaugurated “VISTAAR” - A Lifelong

Learning initiative by the University of Delhi to promote the third dimension of higher education

- Extension in the XII plan to extend knowledge beyond classrooms by involving students and

the teachers under extension & Community outreach (refer Professional Development in

Lifelong Learning & Extension; 2014)

Prospects of Lifelong Learning & Extension

Learning from the ongoing projects, development in the national and international arena, the

Departmental Council is conducting a Two-Days Workshop on the Prospects of Lifelong

Learning & Extension on 20-21 Oct. 2014. It aims to explore Lifelong Learning & Extension

as a discipline and as a field of practice, especially in the Indian context. The report on

Community Learning Centre (CLC) under Vistaar and Capacity and Life skills building under

YUVA will also be presented and released by the Chief Guest.

1. Lifelong Learning: Global Perspective (Prof. Soren, Denmark as Chair)

2. Lifelong Learning & Extension as a Discipline.

3. Lifelong Learning & Civil Society.

9. Lifelong Learning for Scheduled Caste, Schedules Tribes and the Minorities.

10. Lifelong Learning and Accreditation Validation & Recognition of prior learning.

Organizing Committee

Teachers, guest faculties and research scholars of the department constitute the organizing

committee. The office will facilitate in accounts.

Deadlines for Submission of Paper

Last Date for the Abstract submission: 30th September 2014

Last date of Full Length Paper submission: 10th October 2014

Inaugural Function

The Vice-Chancellor, Chief of Education, UNESCO, DG(NLMA) and Additional Secretary,

Ministry of Social Justice are invited. Professor, Soren August Elerish, Danish Institute of

Education, Denmark will deliver the keynote address.

Registration Amount

Rs. 250/- for the students and non-scholarship holders

Rs. 750/- for teachers/JRF holders/NGO Representative and Corporate sector

Research Scholars, Teachers of the Department and invites/Chair, Co-Chair will not pay

registration amount. The former Research Scholars and Guest Faculties will also be

exempted from the registration amount.

The Registration fee may be sent by Demand Draft (D.D.) in favour of ‘The Registrar,

University of Delhi’ by State Bank of India only.

Expected Outcomes

The final outcome will be published in the form of a book as per the University norms.

Journal and the Lifelong Learning Association will be reported in advance to the

Registrar, University of Delhi.

The printing materials developed will be used for strengthening teaching and research

programmes in higher education.
