6 The architect Mies van der Rohe is widely regard-

ed as one of the pioneering masters of modern-

ism. His influential style is stated with extreme

clarity with buildings made of modern materials

such as steel and glass. He called his buildings

“skin and bones” architecture. He strived towards

a minimal framework of structural order balanced

against the implied freedom of free-flowing open

spaces. He sought a rational, dedicated work ap-

proach that guided his creative process of design.

He famously said, “God is in the details.”
