LAST MATCH RECAPBenefiting from defender Liam Ridgewell’s first career Major League Soccer goal and a strong second-half effort, the Timbers overcame a halftime deficit to earn a road point in a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution before 16,409 fans at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. Trailing 1-0 in the 65th minute, Ridgewell intercepted a Revolution pass at midfield and continued to dribble through two New England defenders and into the penalty box before burying a left-footed shot inside the far right post for the equalizer. The Timbers also extended their road unbeaten streak against Eastern Conference sides to four consecutive matches (2-0-2) this season.

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turna-round season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland.

Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33).

Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games.

The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm.

Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Tim-bers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tourna-ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

ABOUT CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Founded in 1962 as the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) tournament adopted its current format in 2008 and crowns the continental club champion among a field of 24 teams representing CONCACAF member associations. The 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League tournament marks the 50th overall edition of the annual international club competition with the winner earning a berth in the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup.

Featuring 24 squads from each of CONCACAF’s three sub-regions - North America, Central America and the Caribbean - the CCL is played in two stages: the Group Stage and Championship Stage. Berths are allocated by country or, in the case of the Caribbean, through a separate qualifying competition.

No club is allowed to be drawn into a group with one from its own country with the possible exception of a wildcard, which would qualify only if a representa-tive from another CONCACAF-affiliated national association could not partici-pate. Additionally, teams from the United States and Mexico are not allowed to face each other in the Group Stage.

Only the group winners advance to the Championship Stage, which consists of a quarterfinal round, a semifinal round and a final round. In the quarterfinals, the group winner that completed the Group Stage with the best record will face the team with the eighth-best record from among the other group winners. In turn, two will play seven, three will play six, and four will face five. In the semifinals the winner of 1-vs-8 advances to meet the winner of 4-vs-5, while winners of 3-vs-6 and 2-vs-7 will square off against each other.

Overall, Cruz Azul is the most successful CONCACAF club champion with six triumphs since 1962, followed by five for Club América and four for Pachuca. No team from MLS has won the competition since the format changed in 2008.

The CONCACAF Champions League champion qualifies for the annual FIFA Club World Cup.

PORTLAND TIMBERS AT ALPHA UNITED FCTUESDAY, AUGUST 19, 2014

SCOUTING ALPHA UNITED

PROVIDENCE STADIUMGuyana’s national stadium, Providence Stadium, is the home field for Alpha United’s CCL matches. It was built to host group stage games of the 2007 West Indies Cricket World Cup.

Guyanese club Alpha United FC qualified for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Cham-pions League by virtue of finishing as one of the top three teams in the 2014 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship tournament in April. Grenada international Kithson Bain scored a pair of goals and Andrew Murray added one in CFU Club Championship wins over Defence Force and Harbour View. Bain played in the group stage of last year’s CCL tournament with Trinidad & Tobago’s Caledonia AIA. Forward Gregory Richardson also has previous CCL experience, scoring seven career goals with the Puerto Rico Islanders. This year’s CCL tournament marks Alpha United’s second appearance in the competition after playing in the preliminary round during the 2011-12 edition. The most decorated club in Guyana, Alpha United has won five consecutive Guyana Football Federa-tion (GFF) National Super League titles, including going undefeated in the 2013-14 season and conceding just seven goals in 15 regular-season matches. Head coach Wayne Dover’s squad netted a league-best 62 goals during the campaign.

LAST MATCH FOR ALPHA UNITED

Alberth Elis struck in the first half to give visiting Olimpia a 1-0 win over Alpha United in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League opener for each club on Aug. 5 at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. The 18-year-old Elis, who scored for Honduras against Panama last month in Central American qualifying for the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, netted the game’s only goal in the 17th minute. Alpha’s best chance of the game came in the 75th minute, when Aldair Paredes’ drive from 25-yards out was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Donis Escober.

LONG DISTANCEPortland leads MLS with 11 goals from outside the penalty box this season, edging out Vancouver (10). Each of midfielder Diego Valeri’s last four goals has come from outside the penalty box. Valeri leads the league in goals from distance, while forward Maximiliano Urruti is tied for second (3).

HITTING THE WOODWORK

With midfielder Will Johnson striking the left post with a shot in the 25th minute on Aug. 9 against Chivas USA, the Timbers lead the league with 14 shots that have hit the frame this season. Toronto FC has hit the woodwork 12 times, which ranks tied for second in the league.

ON THE BOARD FIRSTUnder the guidance of head coach Caleb Porter, the Timbers are 15-2-8 overall when scoring first since the start of the 2013 MLS season.

STRONG FINISHPortland leads MLS with the most goals scored in the final 15 minutes of matches (12) and ranks second for the most second-half goals scored (23).

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SCHEDULE

The Timbers will begin play in Group 5 of the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League tournament on the road against Guyanese side Alpha United FC on Tuesday. Following a tournament-opening road match, Portland will play host to home games against Honduran side Club Deportivo Olimpia on Tuesday, Sept. 16, and Alpha United FC on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Providence Park. Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. (Pacific). Portland concludes play in Group 5 with a trip to face CD Olimpia on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

SCORING RATE

The Timbers have scored 39 goals through 24 matches, the second-best mark in MLS. Portland is on track to score 55 goals this season, which would eclipse the single-season team record (54) set during an impressive 2013 campaign for the club. The Timbers currently rank fourth in MLS with a rate of one goal scored per 55.38 minutes. Only FC Dallas (50.23), Seattle Sounders FC (52.11) and the LA Galaxy (54) have a faster scoring rate this season.

NICE TO SEE YOU AGAINAlpha United forward Gregory Richardson, a Guyana international, had a short period in MLS with the Colorado Rapids in 2009 (one game) before playing later that season with the Carolina Railhawks in the second division. He did make an appearance at Providence Park that year against the second-division Timbers narrowly missing on a bicycle kick that then-defender, now-broadcast analyst Ross Smith headed over the crossbar.

CONSISTENCYMidfielder Rodney Wallace scored his first goal of the season on Aug. 9 against Chivas USA after missing the first half of the year recovering from offseason knee surgery. With the goal, Wallace becomes the only Timbers player to regis-ter a goal in each of the team’s first four seasons in MLS. Wallace has appeared in 79 career matches for the Timbers since 2011, scoring 11 of his 14 career MLS goals with Portland.

BLOCK PARTYThrough 24 matches this season, the Timbers rank first in MLS in blocked shots. Portland has blocked 86 of its opponent’s shot attempts in 2014, two more than FC Dallas (84).
