Comrades Medal on the CV - It Speaks Volumes Each year you reach a point in your training where you live constantly in a Valley of Fa- tigue. You ask why am I doing this? Bruce Fordyce eloquently gives us the answer "The good that Comrades does is not only restricted to those who have won. Thou- sands of runners have had their lives positively changed and enhanced forever. On the one hand we each earn the badge of courage. Regardless of our time or position, the words ‘Comrades Marathon’ on a C.V. tell us much about the person. Here is someone who is a disciplined achiever, someone with endurance who can see a project through to its conclusion. Here is a win- ner." “I am privileged enough to be involved in the Comrades Marathon Panel Talks, and each year the promise is made ‘You will never be the same person, nor will you view life in the same way once you have run this race.’ I have made that promise of- ten now, and I have made good to each and every one I have made that promise.” "On the one hand, the Com- rades brings with it tremen- dous health benefits. The Comrades runner is slimmer, stronger and a healthier per- son than his or her counter- part. I believe that the great- est gift the Comrades runner receives is that of enhanced self-esteem and knowledge that we can truly control our own destinies. In a world of- ten characterized by confu- sion and chaos, Comrades runners learn they can estab- lish their own order and bring about control in their lives. In a world full of spectators, Comrades runners are some of the very few players. After all the runner who can force tired legs to battle up 45th Cutting after running 80 kilo- meters, can do so much with life's other challenges." “Distance running is a very special sport. It can be done and mastered by almost any person. The time taken is not really that important, not as important as the distance covered. Each one of us emerges a better soul for the effort. Every time I run, I feel a small part of me grows a little bigger. I am a runner, and that makes all the difference." Weather predictions point to a nice cool day with a bit of rain. From your committee and fellow runners we wish you a fan- tastic day and hope that you achieve everything you set out to do but most importantly enjoy what is arguably the most beautiful race in the world. On a note of safety, Ladies PLEASE run in groups. Liz Chelin and co were attacked before dawn on Saturday morning. It is getting dark early now and with you all out training for Comrades it is an ideal time for criminals to take ad- vantage of runners running alone. Fortunately as we know Liz has a loud voice and her screaming and shouting attracted a fellow runner and a passer by who came to their rescue. Talking of dark, once again a gen- tle reminder to wear reflector gear whilst running in the dark. It is for your own safety.

Each year you reach a point in

your training where you live constantly in a Valley of Fa-

this?

gives us the answer

"The good that Comrades does is not only restricted to

those who have won. Thou-sands of runners have had

their lives positively changed and enhanced forever. On the

one hand we each earn the badge of courage. Regardless

of our time or position, the words ‘Comrades Marathon’

“I am privileged enough to be involved in the Comrades

On the light side:

2. and I didn’t. 3. I used to have a handle on life—but it broke.

4. You just jealous because the voices only talk to me. 5. I’m not a complete idiot……….. Some parts are missing.

6. Being “over the hill” is much better than being under it. 7. A hangover is the wrath of grapes

8. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a cash advance 9. They call it PMS because Mad Cow Disease was already taken

10. I smile because I don’t know what the heck is going on. 11. It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee machine.
