Software is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do and how to do it.

The two most common categories for software are system software and application software. System software provides operation instructions to the computer. Application software allows the user to do specific jobs, like writing a paper, playing a game, drawing a picture, or listening to music. Some hardware, such as printers, requires both system software and application software to operate correctly.

Listed below are types of jobs performed by software. Find the name of the software your computer (or the one you use often) uses to perform the following jobs:

• Spreadsheet

• Entertainment

• Word Processing

• Publishing

• Photo Editing

• Presentations

Knowing the hardware on your computer will help you understand its uses and limitations.

• Visit a computer store for a demonstration or ask an expert to attend a troop meeting to explain and demonstrate these components.

• Identify components to your leader.

Software programs known as anti-virus, anti-malware, or anti-spyware programs help protect you and your computer from malware and spyware.

If you have a home computer, identify the program(s) on your computer that helps protect it from malware and spyware. Learn how to use the program(s) to scan your computer for problems. If you do not have a home computer, research this topic and list the program(s) you would use to protect your computer.

Some types of software can be harmful to your computer. Malware and spyware are software designed to harm or to take control over your computer. Viruses, Trojan horses, and worms are examples of these types of software.

1. USE A COMPUTER TO PUBLISH A NEWSLETTER FOR YOUR CORPS OR TROOP.

Include graphics and publish at least three separate issues (weekly or monthly).

2. USE A COMPUTER TO CREATE A FLYER INVITING OTHERS TO JOIN YOU AT GIRL GUARDS.

Ask your troop leader or corps officer to have these printed for you. Distribute them to your friends and neighbors or work together as a troop and distribute them in the neighborhood around your corps.
