Computers typically consist of two main components: hardware and software.

Hardware can be built into the computer (internal) or attached to the computer using a special cable or wireless receiver (external).

Software is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do and how to do it.

The two most common categories for software are system software and application software. System software provides operation instructions to the computer. Application software allows the user to do specific jobs, like writing a paper, playing a game, drawing a picture, or listening to music. Some hardware, such as printers, requires both system software and application software to operate correctly.

Listed below are types of jobs performed by software. Find the name of the software your computer (or the one you use often) uses to perform the following jobs:

• Spreadsheet

• Entertainment

• Word Processing

• Publishing

• Photo Editing

• Presentations

Knowing the hardware on your computer will help you understand its uses and limitations.

• Visit a computer store for a demonstration or ask an expert to attend a troop meeting to explain and demonstrate these components.

• Identify components to your leader.

Software programs known as anti-virus, anti-malware, or anti-spyware programs help protect you and your computer from malware and spyware.

If you have a home computer, identify the program(s) on your computer that helps protect it from malware and spyware. Learn how to use the program(s) to scan your computer for problems. If you do not have a home computer, research this topic and list the program(s) you would use to protect your computer.

Some types of software can be harmful to your computer. Malware and spyware are software designed to harm or to take control over your computer. Viruses, Trojan horses, and worms are examples of these types of software.

1. IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE PROPER CARE OF YOUR COMPUTER TO ALLOW IT TO WORK PROPERLY AND LAST AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

You must care for both the hardware and software on your computer.

Place a check mark beside the statements that identify ways to take care of your computer.

Deleting or moving system files so you can find them more quickly.

2. GATHER PHOTOS FROM YOUR TROOP ACTIVITIES AND CREATE A DIGITAL SCRAPBOOK FOR YOUR TROOP.

Include some type of graphics and journaling along with your photos. Create at least THREE scrapbook pages and print them or ask your troop leader or corps officer to have them printed.

Keep a copy of your pages in your Girl Guard binder to share with the Review Committee for High Awards. You may want to create other pages and add to this as you complete additional activities and outings or attend camp.

3. USE A SPREADSHEET PROGRAM TO CREATE A BUDGET FOR YOUR ALLOWANCE AND HOW YOU SPEND IT.

Track your expenses for one month. Share your spreadsheet with your leader.

Include graphics and publish at least three separate issues (weekly or monthly).

2. USE A COMPUTER TO CREATE A FLYER INVITING OTHERS TO JOIN YOU AT GIRL GUARDS.

Ask your troop leader or corps officer to have these printed for you. Distribute them to your friends and neighbors or work together as a troop and distribute them in the neighborhood around your corps.

Check with your corps officer to obtain the official Girl Guard logo graphic to use on the flyer. Keep a copy for your Girl Guard binder.

3. PREPARE A SPECIAL PRESENTATION AS A TROOP (SONG, DANCE, MIME, TIMBREL DRILL, ETC.).
