Class Objectives:
Basics
Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate the following abilities:
Fundamentals in: Computing Concepts, Windows, and the Internet.
Basics of Word: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Basics of Excel: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Basics of Access: 1 and 2.
Basics of PowerPoint: 1 and 2.
Basics of Publisher
Basics of non-MS Office software
One of the most effective ways that students learn basic computer software is by using it. This
course is designed to actively involve the student in using the basic software through homework
and lab assignments. This is a four-credit, four hours per week course. Students are expected to
spend two hours outside of class working on the material for every hour in class.
On-line students are welcome to attend lectures on-campus, if you so desire. This is not so for
the labs, as lab space is limited.
You are responsible for knowing for the exams all material presented, discussed, or assigned.
Software
This course focuses on the use of the Windows version of the Microsoft Office suite of products:
Word,
Excel,
PowerPoint,
Access, and
Publisher.
This software is available to students in the CWU laboratories as well as on computers
throughout campus.
IMPORTANT: Students who do not have access to these CWU facilities will need to gain access
to the MS Office software on their own. It is your responsibility to have this software available
for your use, whether you are an on-campus or off-campus, on-line student. For further help,
please contact Tech Services at 509-963-2001.
Several topics, free software packages outside the MS Office Suite, and skill sets will be
introduced, as well.
Use of Products Other Than MS Office
There are other products that are similar to the MS Office suite, such as Google Docs and
OpenOffice, and these software packages often allow for saving in Microsoft formats. The use
of these software packages is not recommended, as:
their use does not meet the objectives of the course,
submissions may not be viewable to grade, or
there may be inconsistencies or a lack of features that will result in the loss of marks on
assignments.

Grading Note
The laboratories are an integral part of the course. Students MUST PASS this portion of
the class to PASS the class. Laboratory attendance is mandatory; Parts of many lab
assignments will be graded in class only.
Lab Assignments Policy:
If you work with another student, ensure that your work is uniquely your own.
Check Lab open and closed times to schedule your work.
Most assignments will be submitted via Canvas.
Grades will be posted in Canvas.
It is your responsibility to check your grades often.
Any grading questions should be directed to your grader, then to instructor if necessary.
Late Assignments:
Assignments will be accepted for five (5) days after their due dates for 50% credit. After
that, the assignment will be graded as 0.
It is highly recommended that you do not skip an assignment, as many assignments
build on each other and/or are interrelated.
Freebies
Each student will get one ‘freebie’ per half-quarter. That is, a late assignment will be
‘marked up’ as if it were not late. The first one will apply to assignments from the first
half of the quarter and the second one to the second half. These ‘freebies’ must be turned
in within 5 days of the due date (except at the end of the quarter) to qualify for this
treatment. You do not need to select the assignments for your freebies. All students will
have their late freebies raised at the same time (after the midterm and after the final exam).
If a student has no late assignments, a ‘re-do’ on one lab assignment will be considered,
at the discretion of the instructor.
Waivers
If there are extreme extenuating circumstances, late charges can be waived. However, you
must contact me 24 hours prior to the due date of the assignment. A notification via
Canvas is best, or e-mail me directly, or come in during office hours. Documentation
supporting the situation is often required.
Absences due to military obligations, CWU sponsored events where the student’s
attendance is required, or CWU athletic events where the student is an active team member
may be excused if valid documentation is secured from an appropriate source
(commanding officer, director of CWU event, or coach, for example). The student’s name
must be included in the documentation.
Student Work and the Honor Code:
Work for the course basically divides into three areas: exams, labs, and assignments. With
respect to the labs and assignments, students may consult the instructor, the TA's, and each other.
The point is to understand the material enough to complete that assignment.
However, all work turned in is to be the work of the student alone. No two submissions
should be the same. Students may not work together and print out multiple copies of the same
work with different names put on each printout or copy.
Any deviation from this policy is an honor code violation and will be treated as such if detected.
All work turned in for credit, including exams and all
components of all activities, are to be the work of the student
whose name is on the exam or assignment.
Student can receive assistance from individuals other than the
instructor and TA’s only to ascertain the cause of problems.
Thus you can get help if you need it to figure out why something
doesn't work. All assignments turned in for credit are to be your
own individual work and should demonstrate your skills, not
someone else's (i.e., do not use work from either a classmate,
another student, the internet, publications, or any other source,
published or not).
Plagiarism
TurnItIn is used to determine the originality of work. A high score (30% or
higher) will be considered an academic offense. In cases where it is hard to
determine who committed the offense (i.e., who copied from whom), both students
will be considered to have committed the offense.
Students found committing an academic offense will be handled in the following
way:
First violation: Students will receive no credit (a 0) for the
assignment and a report sent to the Office of Student
Success.
Second violation: Students will receive no credit for the
assignment, a report sent to the Office of Student Success,
and an incident letter will be placed on file in the Computer
Science Department.
Third violation: The student(s) will be removed from the
course, a report sent to the Office of Student Success, an
incident letter will be placed on file in the Computer
Science Department, and the student will receive a failing
grade.
Attendance: Attendance will be taken periodically and randomly and may be taken during lecture or
lab at any time during the class.
Missing class is no excuse for missing or late labs or assignments, missed quizzes or
exams, or not getting information you need.
If you have an excused absence, it is your responsibility to get the information you
missed and do the work. It is also your responsibility to make arrangements to get missed
work completed and submitted.
The syllabus and schedule are subject to change. It is your responsibility to keep
track of all work covered and changes to the syllabus and schedule.
Early exams and makeup exams are not given except in cases of dire emergency.
ADA Statement: Students who have special needs or disabilities that may affect their ability to access
