• Office apps name files for you– Word: Document1– Excel: Book1– Power Point: Presentation1
• Don’t use these names!• Use descriptive names

File Types
• File name gives clues, but…• Extension (in Windows) tells the
type– .bmp for bitmap files (pictures)– .doc and .docx for Word document
files
• Double-click a .doc (or .docx) file to open the file and Word at the same time

Opening a File
• From within an application– Office Button | Open– Office Button |
Recent
• From Documents– Double-click the
icon– Right-click and
select Open with

Saving Files
• Saving existing file– Office Button |
Save– [Ctrl + S]
• Save as– Opens Save As
dialog box– Enables you to
make changes

• Change location– Up One Level
button– Click Documents
in the Favorite Links task pane
– Click Computer in the Folders pane to pick a different drive

folder– Click OK, then double-
click the folder– Click OK to save your
