Transcript of Computer animation
Computer Animation or CGI animation is the process used for generating animated images by using computer graphics. The more general term computer-generated imagery encompasses both static scenes and dynamic images, while computer animation only refers to moving images. Modern computer animation usually uses 3D computer graphics, although 2D computer graphics are still used for stylistic, low bandwidth, and faster real-time renderings. Sometimes the target of the animation is the computer itself, but sometimes the target is another medium, such as film.
TECHNIQUES OF
ANIMATION
There are mainly three types
of animation:-
1. Traditional Animation
2. Stop motion Animation
3. Computer Animation

TRADITIONAL ANIMATION
Traditional animation (also called cel animation or hand-drawn animation) was the process used for most animated films of the 20th century. The individual frames of a traditionally animated film are photographs of drawings that are first drawn on paper. To create the illusion of movement, each drawing differs slightly from the one before it. The animators' drawings are traced or photocopied onto transparent acetate sheets called cels, which are filled in with paints in assigned colors or tones on the side opposite the line drawings. The completed character cels are photographed one-by-one against a painted background by a rostrum camera onto motion picture film .
Examples of traditionally animated feature films include :-
1. Pinocchio
2. The Lion King
3. Akira
STOP MOTION ANIMATION
Stop-motion animation is used to describe animation created by physically manipulating real-world objects and photographing them one frame of film at a time to create the illusion of movement. There are many different types of stop-motion animation, usually named after the medium used to create the animation. Computer software is widely available to create this type of animation; however, traditional stop motion animation is usually less expensive and time-consuming to produce than current computer animation.
Examples of stop motion animated feature films
include :-
1. Dragonslayer
2. Jason and the Argonauts
3. King Kong
COMPUTER ANIMATION
Computer animation encompasses a variety of techniques, the unifying factor being that the animation is created digitally on a computer. This animation takes less time to produce than previous traditional animation. 2D animation techniques tend to focus on image manipulation while 3D techniques usually build virtual worlds in which characters and objects move and interact. 3D animation can create images that seem real to the viewer.
2D Animation 2D animation figures are created and/or edited on the
computer using 2D bitmap graphics or created and edited using 2D vector graphics. This includes automated computerized versions of traditional animation techniques such as interpolated morphing, onion skinning and interpolated rotoscoping.
2D animation has many applications, including analog computer animation, Flash animation and PowerPoint animation. Cinemagraphs are still photographs in the form of an animated GIF file of which part is animated.
Examples of 2D animated feature films include :-
1. The Jungle Book 2
2. Thor: Tales of Asgard
3. Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo
3D Animation 3D animation is digitally modeled and manipulated by an
animator. The animator starts by creating an external 3D mesh to manipulate. A mesh is a geometric configuration that gives the visual appearance of form to a 3D object or 3D environment. The mesh may have many vertices which are the geometric points which make up the mesh; it is given an internal digital skeletal structure called an armature that can be used to control the mesh with weights. This process is called rigging and can be programmed for movement with keyframes.
Other techniques can be applied, such as mathematical functions (e.g., gravity, particle simulations), simulated fur or hair, and effects such as fire and water simulations. These techniques fall under the category of 3D dynamics.
Examples of 3D animated feature films include :-
1. Kung-Fu Panda
2. Ice Age
3. The Adventures of Tintin

SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Toy Story 3 is a 2010 American 3D computer-
animated comedy-drama film, and the third
installment in the Toy Story series. It was produced
by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt
Disney Pictures. It is also the highest-grossing
animated film of all time. Toy Story 3 became the
first ever animated film in history to make over $1
billion worldwide. It is currently the 11th-highest-
grossing film of all time. Toy Story 3 earned
$1,063,171,911 worldwide.
DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. is an American
animation studio based in Glendale, California that
creates animated feature films, television programs,
and online virtual worlds. They have released a total of
twenty-six feature films, including the franchises of
Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train
Your Dragon.
As of June 2013, its feature films have made $11
billion worldwide, with its $430 million average
gross surpassing all other studios besides Pixar
($595 million). Three of DreamWorks Animation's
films—Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever
After—are among the 50 highest grossing films
of all time, and sixteen of the films are among
the 50 highest-grossing animated films, with
Shrek 2 being the fourth all-time highest. Even
though the studio also made traditionally-
animated films earlier, all of their films now utilize
computer-animation. The studio has so far
received two Academy Awards along with
numerous Annie & Emmy Awards; as well as
multiple Golden Globe & BAFTA nominations.
