Welcome to the November Newsletter!

Thanks to everyone that came along and helped make the Halloween special a

great success. A special thanks to Jim who helped with all the setup the night

before and those that stayed on at the end to help tidy up the remains of all

the exploded glow rings that had given the hall a good Halloween splattering

We hope everyone enjoyed it.

Archery GB Membership 2019/20

October marks the start of the Archery GB membership year, so now is the perfect time to consider joining. We’re

now up to 16 full members of AGB and its growing all the time which is great to see. There are a number of benefits

to joining the governing body of your sport which you can find here: https://www.archerygb.org/about-us-structure-

Purbeck Annual 3D Animal Target Field Archery Tournament

On the weekend of October 12th & 13th Rick and Leon visited Purbeck archery in Dorset for their annual 3D target

field archery tournament. What started as a VERY wet day turned into a great day of field archery with a round of 18

animal targets in the morning followed by a special ‘Jurassic Valley’ 18 dinosaur targets in the afternoon. Each target

can be anywhere from 5-70 yards and they are NOT marked for distance so that’s a major challenge! You then have

just 3 arrows to hit the target, moving forwards to designated shooting pegs each time. There were over 100 archers

on the day shooting in a number of bow style categories. Leon won 2nd in the Freestyle category with Rick coming in

a very close 4th.

We are trying to organise another visit to Purbeck to introduce some of our archers to field archery with a view to

them being signed off as safe to shoot and join the national field archery society. If you are interested in this please

let Rick know.

Hall of Fame August 2019

Well done to archers achieving awards and badges this month. (Sorry if we’ve missed anyone below! Let us know!)

Well done to Owen Smith on achieving a new Portsmouth PB of 473 and setting a new Under 14 club record at the same time!

British Archery Postal League 2019/2020

As you may have read in the previous newsletter, Compton Archery have entered several teams in the British Archery Winter Postal League. This, as the name suggests is a national league and has clubs taking part from all over the country! The league consists of 2 separate competitions - an Indoor Portsmouth league and an Outdoor Frostbite league. We have entered 2 senior and 1 junior teams in the indoor league and 2 senior teams in the outdoor league.

Page 3: Compton Archery November 2019 Newsletter · On the weekend of October 12th & 13th Rick and Leon visited Purbeck archery in Dorset for their annual 3D target field archery tournament.

The season will consist of 5 matches in each league over the winter period - 1 match per month - and although we will not actually be shooting with the opposing team, we will have to exchange results, so we will get to shoot against other archers from all over the place. If you would like to take part in the Postal league, the matches will be held on the 1st Archery Friday of every month for the Indoor (Portsmouth) league, so the first match is currently planned for the 8th November, with the first Outdoor (Frostbite) the next day on Sat 9th. All you need to do is complete a full round and submit the completed score sheet to me at the end of the night. If you submit a score sheet, you will be considered as part of the squad. All the club asks is that you pay £2. That’s £2 for the ENTIRE SEASON by the way, not per match. If you want to do the Frostbite league too, it will be £2 per session because we’ll be shooting on a completely separate day and need to cover wear and tear on targets etc. If we have more than 6 senior and 3 junior scores submitted, it will be the highest of those 6 and 3 that get submitted to the league as the match result. And just so you know, junior archer scores CAN be submitted in the senior teams. There will also be no separation between freestyle (with a sight) and barebow score. It is just the highest scores of the match. If you are interested, please come and speak to me the next time you see me at a session, and I will explain it to you hopefully better than I have here. Thank you all. Stu Walker

Equipment changes

We have now got our space back in the outside container so we’ve moved ALL the kit back into that for the winter

months. If we do shoot outside (e.g. for Frostbite rounds) we’ll have to temporarily roll targets over to the field and

then put them back afterwards. We are arranging mats for the hall entrances as we are aware that they get wet and

slippery when it’s raining outside. As always, please take care when moving any of the equipment and always ask if

you’re new to it.

Classifieds

A number of archers have spare kit for sale as a result of upgrades etc. Before you buy something new it’s always

worth having a word with Rick or Leon about potential 2nd hand kit available. Also, if you’re starting out looking at

your own kit also let us know so that we can help you with that and keep a look out for good deals.

Warming up

Like any sport, warming up your muscles beforehand is absolutely key to your performance and prevention of injury.

Here are a few good warm ups to do before you start shooting.
