1. GENERAL1.1. Scope

1.1.1. This specification describes the TLM requirements for centrifugalcompressors conforming to API Standard 617 as modified herein.1.2. General1.2.1. All requirements of this specification are additions to those of API

Standard 617, fifth edition, unless otherwise qualified as a substitution

for the API Standard. From Section 2 of this specification onwards, thetitles and numbering follow those of API 617. As a result of this gaps in

numbering may occur.1.2.2. Unless otherwise specified, the compressor vendor shall be responsible

for the coordination of the design and for the satisfactory functioning of the complete unit, ie. compressor, driver and ancillaries. In cases wherethe compressor vendor supplies equipment that he has not

manufactured, he shall be responsible for ensuring that the designs of these items are compatible with each other and with his own equipment in all respects and they shall be included in his guarantee. In particular they shall be compatible dimensionally, in performance, in control and in

vibration, such that a fully integrated unit is achieved.1.3. Applicable Regulations, Codes, Standards and Specifications

1.4. Other Regulations, Codes and Standards1.4.1. All centrifugal compressors shall comply with the latest editions of the

following:. API 617 - Centrifugal Compressors for General Refinery Service

. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code . A5TM A350 - Footings, Carbon and Low Alloy Steel, Requiring NotchToughness Testing for Piping Components

. ASTM A352 - Steel Castings, Ferritic and Martensitic, for PressureContaining Parts, Suitable for Low Temperature Service1.4.2. Conflict Between Specification, Codes and Standards

. Where a conflict occurs between this specification and anyspecification, regulation, code or standard which has been specified

far a particular service or item of equipment, then TLM shall beconsulted and a ruling in writing shall be obtained before any work is

started. . Where regulatory codes or regulations conflict with this specification,the more rigid specification shall govern.

2. BASIC DESIGN2.1. General2.1.1. In addition to the requirements of API 617 Noise Limits shall comply to

the requirements of GS 406 Noise Control.

. Compressors having variable speed drives shall, whenever possible,be designed to meet all specified operating conditions, by speedchange alone. For those operating conditions that (cannot be met inthis manner, alternate methods shall be stated in the vendor's

proposal and shall be subject to approval by TLM prior to order placement.. Direct coupled units shall be used where practical to avoid the use of

gears.

2.1.2. Where single shaft gas turbines or constant speed electric motors areused for compressor drivers, Contractor shall verify that the turndown

ratio (through the use of inlet guide vanes, throttle valves, etc.) isadequate for ambient air temperature variations and/or anticipatedpartial load operations. Two shaft gas turbines drives shall be specified

where necessary.

2.1.3. In applications there parallel operation of compressors is expected, the

Vendor shall specify the minimum acceptable slope of the compressor curve (% rise from normal operation point to surge).

2.1.4. The compressor Vendor (or gas turbine Vendor when driver is a gas turbine) shale provide factory representatives to supervise the initial

installation and initial operation. The initial and normal startupprocedures shall be prepared by the Vendor.2.2. Casings2.2.1. For casing design temperatures below -29C casing material shall have

the impact strength required by ASTM A350 or A3S2.2.2.2. The compressor Mendor shall determine the maximum casing working

pressure in accordance with the requirements of ASME Code Section VIII. The Thickness of the casting shall include at least a 3mm corrosion

allowance.2.3. Interstage Diaphragms and Inlet Guide Vanes

2.3.1. Diaphragms for horizontally split compressors shall have provision forjacking and lifting to permit removal without damage.2.3.2. Diaphragm cooling-is unacceptable.

2.4. Casing Connections2.4.1. For horizontally split casings, all main process piping connections, and

as far as possible other connections, shall be located in the lower half ofthe casing.

2.4.2. Seal welding of threaded connections is not permitted.2.4.3. All lube and seal oil lines downstream of the main filters shall be welded

Type 18-8 stainless steel. Valves shall be carbon steel with stainlesssteel trim, flanged or socketweld type.

2.4.4. Instrument and controls shall be installed with suitable insulation to permit removal of the device while the system is operationaL.

2.4.5. Depending on the application and the compressor design, thecompressor may be required to withstand forces and moments higher than those quoted in API 2.5.1. The figures to be used shall be subject to approval by TLM.

2.5.1. All components subject to axial thrust shall have positive axial locationon the shaft.

2.5.2. The compressor Vendor shall, jointly with the driver Vendor, establish

the maximum transient torques that will occur in the shafting systemunder start-up, running, and fault conditions. All components, including

the coupling, and the fit of the coupling hub on the shaft, shall besuitable for at least 115% of this figure.

2.5.3. On sour services as defined in ES1.v1 01, riveted impellers shall beused only with the approval of TLM.2.6. Bearings and Bearing Housings2.6.1. Radial Bearings

. Bearings shall be capable of full speed, full load operation. They shall also withstand reverse rotation for a period of time without damage.2.6.2. Thrust Bearings. Bearings shall be fitted with embedded temperature sensors to detect

metal surface temperatures.. Thrust bearings shall be capable of operating in reverse rotation, at

maximum continuous speed and with full load, without damage, for a period of time.2.6.3. Bearing Housings
