High bonding energySiloxane bonds (-Si-O-Si-) form the basic backbone of silicone. Siloxane bonds have high bonding energy, and this backbone is the same structure which makes up inorganic materials including glass and quartz. Silicones are thus chemically stable and exhibit outstanding heat and weather resistance.

Helical molecular structureThe molecular structure is helical and highly flexible. This quality is what gives silicone its high compressibility and cold-resistant properties. There is little temperature dependence of the physical properties of silicones.

Low intermolecular forceDue to the helical molecular structure and the presence of organic groups (CH3), the intermolecular distance is large and the molecules tend not to agglutinate. This results in the low surface tension of silicones and their properties of water repellency and mold-releasability.

Combining the features of both organics and inorganics

Creating materials with more sophisticated featuresThere is another major feature of silicones: blending technologies can be used to impart additional features, creating all-new materials that have the qualities of other materials combined with those of silicones.

Over 4,000 products, with exploration into new fieldsSince bringing our first silicone products to market in 1953, Shin-Etsu Chemical has worked for half a century developing new applications and products to meet wide-ranging needs. With products in fluid, resin, and rubber forms, Shin-Etsu boasts a total of over 4,000 products. Our products are put to use in a wide range of fields, including the electronics and machinery, and the chemical, textile, construction, and food industries. Silicones are materials with diverse properties and great potential, and Shin-Etsu Chemical’s efforts are ceaseless in the exploration of new directions and applications.

Ever-expanding possibilities

Handling precautions

■ Quality, storage, and health and safety

• Many of the silanes contained in this catalog may be classified as hazardous materials under the fire safety laws of various countries. Please use caution in the use of flame during usage and storage of silanes. Be sure to read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before handling. MSDS and Hazardous Materials Database registration certificates can be obtained from our Sales Department.

• Chlorosilanes are extremely reactive compounds and contact with moisture wil l cause generation of hydrochloric acid gas. Always wear protective gear such as rubber gloves and goggles to prevent contact with the skin and eyes. In case of contact with skin or mucous membranes, wash thoroughly with water and consult a physician immediately. Take care to ensure adequate ventilation to prevent breathing of vapors.

• Always wear protective gear such as rubber gloves and goggles when handling alkoxysilane to prevent contact with the skin and eyes. Silane coupling agentsSilane coupling agents contain at least two different reactive groups within their molecules. One of these functional groups forms chemical bonds with inorganic materials, and the other forms chemical bonds with organic materials. This property enables silane coupling agents to function as intermediaries in bonding organic materials to inorganic materials, which normally tend not to bond with each other.

● Higher-quality composite materialsSilane coupling agents improve dispersion during mixing of resins and fillers, and improve the mechanical strength, water and heat resistance, transparency, adhesion and other properties of the composite materials. Silane coupling agents are also highly effective in improving the chemical bonding of heat-cure resins and their compatibility with polymers.

● Resin modification/Surface treatmentReacting a resin with a silane coupling agent can improve its anchorage to inorganic materials, its room-temperature humidity curing properties, and improve its weatherability and resistance to heat, acids and solvents. Silane coupling agents can also be used to treat the surface of inorganic materials to improve the materials’ surface characteristics.

Handling precautions

■ Quality, storage, and handling

• Silane coupling agents hydrolyze if they come into contact with water or moisture, causing a change in properties and generation of substances such as ethanol and methanol. Therefore, use caution not to leave open and always seal tightly after use to prevent the incursion of water or moisture. Replacing the air in the storage container with dry nitrogen is ideal.

• Please read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before use. MSDS can be obtained from our Sales Department.

Silicone fluidsSilicone fluids are generally colorless transparent liquids. They exhibit excellent resistance to heat, cold, and moisture. There is also little viscosity change in silicone fluids over a wide temperature range, and they have outstanding electrical properties. In addition, they are notable for their characteristics of mold-releasability, water repellency, lubricity, and defoaming properties.

● Heat resistanceSilicone fluids have outstanding stability against thermal oxidation.

● Cold resistanceSilicone fluids withstand low temperatures well. Methylphenyl silicone fluid, formulated for low temperature applications, maintains flowability even at -65°C.

● Viscosity stabilityThere is l i t t le change in viscosity over a wide temperature range.

● Chemical stabilitySilicone fluids are almost totally chemically inactive. At room temperature, they show almost no effects from alkali solutions (up to 10%) or acidic solutions (up to 30%).

● Non-corrosive and little effect on other materialsSilicone fluids have almost no adverse effects on metals and many other materials.

● Low surface tensionSilicone fluids have much lower surface tension than water and other common synthetic oils.

Silicone greases start with a base oil of silicone fluid, to which are added various additives and fillers (metal soap, etc.). Silicone greases exhibit thermal oxidation stability over a wide tempera-ture range, offer good moisture-resistance, and are used primarily for lubrication.Silicone fluid compounds are products with a grease-like consistency. They are produced by blending materials such as silica powder into a base oil of silicone fluid. They exhibit thermal oxidation stability over a wide temperature range and have outstanding electrical properties and water repellency. Silicone fluid compounds are used primarily in electrical insulators and seals, and for heat dissipation and water repellency.

● Heat and cold resistanceBecause the silicone fluid base oil has good resistance to heat and cold, the drop point is high, there is little oil separation, and volatile matter content is low.

● Moisture resistanceThese products have good resistance to water and moisture. Silicone greases can be left underwater for long periods; the surface will turn white, but there is almost no internal change.

● SafetyThe silicone fluid base oil is chemically inactive, so these products pose almost no risk to humans and animals.

● EfficiencyExcellent performance even when used in small amounts.

Treatment agentsSilicones are chemically inactive, have very low surface tension and provide good water repellency, releasability, and lubrication. Thus, silicones are also commonly used as fiber and fabric processing agents. They are used to treat natural and synthetic fibers or fabrics to make them water repellent or waterproof, to impart flexibility, and are commonly used to improve the texture and sewability of textile goods, resulting in higher grade and more functional products.

● Water repellencyForms a coating (oil film or hard coating) on textiles to provide excellent water repellency.

● SoftnessSilicone greatly reduces the friction coefficient between fibers to achieve distinctive softness.

● DurabilityThe flexible film which forms on the fiber surface improves the durability of the fabric with respect to washing and dry cleaning.

● Rebound resiliency (“stretch-back”)Fabrics have excellent rebound resiliency due to the flexible elastic coating which forms on the fiber surface.

● TransparencySilicone processing agents improve the hyperchromic effect and colorfastness due to the transparent coating which forms on the fiber surface.

● Weather and heat resistanceThe chemical bonds which form the backbone are siloxane bonds (Si-O-Si), so the interatomic bonding energy of these processing agents is high and they have excellent weather and heat resistance.

Release agentsThe surface tension of silicone is low and it spreads easily, so it provides good wetting of fine, irregular surfaces. It is chemically inactive and can be used with almost all molding materials. Silicone has excellent heat and cold resistance and offers good performance over a wide temperature range. These characteristics are why silicone is used as a mold-release agent in a range of industries including the rubber industry, resin industry, food processing industry, and die casting. Silicone mold-release agents are available in various forms including emulsions, oil types, solvent types, bake-on types, and sprays.

● VersatilityCan be used in diverse applications including rubbers, plastics, metals, and foods.

● Mold-releasabilitySilicone mold-release agents are non-compatible with almost all organic materials, so they offer outstanding mold-release performance.

● Heat and cold resistanceThey have excellent resistance to heat and cold and provide good mold-release results over a wide temperature range.

● Chemical stabilityThey are chemically inactive, so they do not cause corrosion, swelling, or deformation of molds or molded items.

● Can be used on complex moldsSilicone mold-release agents have low surface tension, so they provide good wetting of intricately shaped molds. This means that even complex molded items release easily from the mold.

Silicone resinsSilicone resins are composed of highly branched 3-dimensional polymers. They form coatings with outstanding heat resistance, weather resistance, electrical insulative properties, and water repellency. They generally dissolve in organic solvents, and are used in diverse applications to improve durability, safety, and reliability.

● Heat resistanceSiloxane bonds (Si-O-Si) form the backbone of the molecular structures of silicone resins. Siloxane bonds have high bonding energy and the temperature of thermal decomposition is high, so these resins have excellent heat resistance. There is typically no decomposition, degradation, or discoloration even in high-temperature conditions of 250°C or more.

● Electrical insulative propertiesSilicone resins exhibit excellent electrical properties over a wide temperature range. In particular, even at high temperatures there is little decline in electrical insulative properties, and good resistance to arcing.

● Weather resistanceThey exhibit outstanding weather resistance, with little degradation caused by UV rays or other elements. Coatings exhibit little yellowing, chalking, or loss of gloss, and they maintain stable coating properties over long periods.

● Water repellencyDue to the orientation of the methyl groups in the molecules, the surface of the cured material has excellent water repellency.

● High hardnessSilicone resins are highly branched 3-dimensional polymers, and the backbone structure of the cured material is similar to that of glass, so these materials can be used to modify surfaces to make them inorganic substances.

Paint additivesSilicone paint additives have very low surface tension. This property makes them very effective when added in small amounts to paints. Silicone paint additives are highly effective for surface modification, and for preventing various paint film flaws.

● SlicknessSilicone paint additives function to lower the friction coefficient of the paint film surface, making it slicker.

● Forms hammertone finishesSilicone paint additives are used to create hammertone finishes by the formation of cells due to a convection effect in the paint film.

● Prevent floating and floodingSilicone is dispersed in the interior and surface of the paint film, thus preventing the convection effect during paint drying.

● Prevent blockingDimethyl silicone fluid contains various functional groups that react with paint resins, thus improving durability and compatibility with paints and providing an antiblocking effect.

● Defoaming effectSilicone paint additives function to break down foam in paints.

● Improved resistance to moisture and salt waterThe molecules contain functional groups which bond with metals and inorganic matter, and contain functional groups which bond with the paint vehicle. This improves the adhesiveness of the paint film and improves its resistance to salt water.

Two-component RTV rubbers(for electric and electronic applications)

A two-component RTV sil icone rubber compounds cures by adding a specified amount of a curing agent to the base compound. Like one-component RTV rubbers, two-component RTV rubbers have outstanding electrical properties and resistance to heat and cold, while also offering improved deep-section curability and storage stability.

● Properties identical to those of one-component RTV rubbersElectrical properties, heat and cold resistance, shock resistance, weather resistance, curing characteristics, etc.

● Deep-section curabilityThe curing reaction proceeds uniformly at the surface and internally, regardless of rubber thickness.

● Adjustability of cure speedCure time can be adjusted by changing the type or quantity of curing agent, or by heating.

● StorabilityThe base compound and curing agent are stored separately, so the product will not become unusable due to curing during storage. Two-component RTV rubbers can be stored for long periods.

Two-component RTV rubbers (for moldmaking)

Two-component RTV silicone rubber compounds for moldmaking are suitable for mold masters for molding with polyester resin, epoxy resin, urethane foam, wax, plaster, and low-melt-point metal alloys. These RTV rubber compounds allow accurate reproduction of the shape of the original. They are easy to use and are thus used widely in industrial applications, as well as by hobbyists looking to create the perfect replica.

● WorkabilityThe base compound and curing agent are mixed and then poured into the mold to create a silicone rubber mold quickly. Workable time and cure time can be adjusted.

● Mold-releasabilityThe cured rubber releases easily from the mold, so mold-release agents (soapy water, wax, etc.) are unnecessary.

● Dimensional stabilityThese rubbers offer good dimensional stability, with little shrinkage.

● FlowabilityThey have excellent flowability, so the original form is reproduced accurately. This includes even intricate shapes and details such as fingerprints and wood grain.

● Heat and chemical resistanceThese rubbers have outstanding resistance to heat and chemicals.

● Deep-section curabilityMoldmaking RTV silicone rubber compound cures uniformly throughout the mold, regardless of thickness.

● Non-exothermicNo heat is generated during curing, meaning no adverse effects to the original.

●Generally, cure speed can be increased significantly by adding CAT-RS (at 0.1-0.2%) as a cure accelerant to condensation-cure products in addition to the curing agent, or by heating addition-cure products. Other trial products are available, so if the products listed above cause problems in moldmaking, please contact Shin-Etsu for further details.

●Linear shrinkage values are the shrinkage values of a 2 mm sheet, not shrinkage values of an actual rubber mold.●Shrinkage values in condensation-cure products are somewhat higher over longer periods such as one week, one month, etc.

✽1:Values shown are the lengths of time during which products maintain flowability at 23°C, but the viscosity of RTV rubber compounds increases with time, so work should be performed in the shortest time possible. ✽2:Standard cure time varies according to the size of the curing material.

✽3:We recommend using CAT-RM when making thick matrices. CAT-RT does not have deep-section curability.✽4:Three-component type with CAT-RM and CAT-24 added. ✽5:CLA-4, a fast-acting curing agent (8 hours at 23°C), is also available.✽6:By using CAT-1310L with KE-1310ST, or using CAT-1314L with KE-1314, work life increases to 300 minutes (23°C).✽7:After adding the curing agent and allowing to set for 24 hours at 23°C, an aftercure process (heating to 150°C for 30 min) can be used

SealantsSilicone sealants are elastic sealing materials that offer outstanding durability, weather resistance, and adhesion. As buildings and structures move, such as during earthquakes and typhoons, silicone sealants move flexibly with them. They are therefore commonly used in sealing applications in high-rise buildings and housing, civil engineering, clean rooms, and in the joints of aquariums.

● Durability and weather resistanceOutstanding durability and weather resistance, with almost no degradation from UV rays or ozone.

● AdhesionWith the use of an appropriate primer, silicone sealants offer high adhesion to almost all materials.

● Moisture resistanceOur silicone sealants have superior durability, weather resistance, and adhesiveness, so they form airtight, moisture-proof seals that last for years.

● Resistance to salt damageSilicone sealants are highly resistant to salt damage, so they can be used in buildings and factories in coastal areas, offering high durability.

Rubber compoundsSilicone rubber compounds have properties of both inorganic and organic materials. They are composed of unique si l icone gums and high-purity silica. Silicone rubber compounds offer many outstanding features not found in other organic rubbers.

● Heat and cold resistanceAt 150°C there is almost no change in physical properties, and they maintain elasticity at temperatures at which typical organic rubbers become brittle.

● Weather resistanceSilicone rubber compounds can be exposed to UV rays, wind, and rain for long periods with almost no change in physical properties.

● Oil resistance, solvent resistance, chemical resistanceSilicone rubber compounds have superior oil resistance at high temperatures. They also have outstanding resistance to solvents and other chemicals, and are nearly impervious to polar organic compounds and dilute acids and alkalis.

● Electrically insulativeThey are stable over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. And even when immersed in water, there is almost no decline in performance.

● Compression setThey are stable over a wide temperature range (-60°C to +250°C).

● Transparency and coloringSilicone rubber compounds are highly transparent, meaning they can be easily colored with pigments.

The name “LIMS” describes a molding system in which l iquid si l icone rubber is used in high-precision injection molding machines. All steps are automated, from mixing to molding. This system saves labor and time, and makes it easy to produce high-quality molded items.

● Saves timeAddition-cure liquid silicone is used, so cure speed is fast and molding time can be reduced.

● Increased productivityThe materials are liquids, so molding can be done at low injection pressures. The system is also suitable for molding of high-precision components.

● Automation of the molding processSuitable for flashless, runnerless molding. And because molded items release easily from the mold after curing, the molding process can be automated.

● Environmentally friendlyThere are no byproducts generated during curing. With flashless and runnerless molding, there is no need to p rocess was te ma te r i a l , mean ing a more environmentally friendly manufacturing process.

LIMS(Liquid silicone rubber Injection Molding System)

Selective Self-adhesivesLIMS Selective Self-adhesives adhere to resins without sticking to the mold, so they allow integrated molding through automation.

*Rubber may adhere to the mold depending on the material used for the mold and the condition of its surfaces. Conduct a check before moving to mass production.Additionally, prolonged continual use may cause deterioration of the mold surfaces, or the LIMS material may adhere to mold surfaces, so be sure to perform regular maintenance.

T he ST se r ie s i s a l i ne of p ro duc t s of heat-shrinkable silicone rubber tubing. The inner diameter shrinks by about 50% simply by heating. The ST series are used for insulation, protection, and sheathing applications. These rubber tubings have superior heat and cold resistance, flexibility, and electrical insulative properties. They typically maintain their performance characteristics over a wide temperature range, from -50°C to +200°C.

● Labor saving● Electrical properties

Electrically conductive rubber productsThe EC series is a line of silicone rubber compounds that have been given electrical conductivity through the addition of carbon and other electrically conductive materials.

● Durability

Thermal interface phase change materialsPhase change materials are high-performance thermal interface sheets that soften with heat. Heat softens the sheet for a better conforming fit, which reduces thermal resistance. The result is superior dissipation of heat.

● Made of silicone, so they provide long-lasting, dependable performance.

● Sheets are easy to handle.● Reworkable.

Thermal interface silicone productsThe TC series is a line of products made of thermal conductive silicone rubbers which offer superior electrical insulation. Special fillers have been added to boost thermal conductive performance. The products of Low-hardness TC series are elastic, have good contact to heating elements and heatsinks, and offer highly effective heat dissipation.
