It can happen at any age—even among children. Anygender. Any ethnicity.Kidney stones are one of the most commondisorders of the urinary tract, affecting one inevery 10 people nationwide, and they areon the rise, particularly among women andchildren.
Although not life-threatening, kidney stones areamong the most painful conditions health careproviders encounter, and the chance of having arecurrence is great. In fact, half of the peoplewho have a kidney stone will have anotherwithin 10 years.
Kidney stones are small “pebbles” of salt andminerals that build up in the urine and canrange in size from a small grain to a golf ball.They can occur in the kidney itself, the ureter(the tube connecting the kidney to the blad-der), or in the bladder. Some can pass throughthe urinary tract without a problem, but othersmay get stuck and require medical treatment.
