If based on a comprehensive and exact diagnosis this approach may allow us to treat, for instance, mouth breathing (our schoolchildren’s occupational disease), crossbite and scoliosis/postural disorders at an early stage thus guiding the complete system

The symptoms are not always limited to jaw problems, respiratory disorders or chronic tonsillitis, but may have wide ramifications on the entire organism and the general personality. A proper sense and understanding of the associations between biology and function may provide conclusions that allow us to implement causal and preventive therapies. Kieferanomalien/Zahnfehlstellungen und Orthopädie stehen in sehr en-ger Beziehung zueinander und diese Beziehungen werden manchmal unter-schätzt oder nicht in Verbindung gebracht. Zum Beispiel kann man im Wachs-tum Körperanomalien durch Behandlungen im Kieferbereich beseitigen und umgekehrt. Dies bedarf einer genauen und ausführlichen Diagnostik um z. B. bei Mundatmern ( Berufskrankheit unserer Schuljugend) , Kreuzbiss und Skoliosen/ Haltungsschäden frühzeitig das System „ Mensch in die richtige Richtung „zu lenken.Die Symptomatik dabei beschränkt sich nicht nur auf Kieferprobleme , Atem-wegserkrankungen und chronische Tonsillitis, sondern hat weitreichende Fol-gen auf den Gesamtorganismus und die Gesamtpersönlichkeit.Durch das Gespür und das Wissen für biologische und funktionelle Zusam-menhänge können kausaltherapeutische und prophylaktische Behandlungen/Konsequenzen gezogen und verwirklicht werden. When teeth are lost, an important stimulus

for the dentoalveolar flow of information is lost. The subsequent resorption processes result in a considerable loss of periodontal and alveolar hard and soft tissues creating treatment needs. Surgical and/or augmenting procedures may be highly invasive and extensive, creating high costs and stress for the patient. A novel approach involving the replantation of root segments to maintain the dentoalveolar flow of information and the forced eruption of teeth to regenerate lost tissues is presented. Key elements are the periodontal ligament and the supracrestal fibers. Minimally invasive and non-disruptive for the patient, this approach affords clinical results that are at least equivalent to those obtained surgically, but with considerably shorter treatment times.

SPEAKER: PROF. DR. GILBERTO DEBELIAN, OSLO, NORWAYDr. Gilberto Debelian graduated from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1987. He completed his specialization in endodontics at the Univer-

sity of Pennsylvania, USA. His postdoctoral thesis at the University of Oslo, Norway, on bacteremia and fungemia in patients undergoing endodontic therapy received awards by the European Society of Endodontology and the Norwegian Dental Associa-tion. Dr. Debelian is Professor for Endodontology and Head of the Continued Education Program at the University of Oslo, Norway. He is Adjunct Visiting Professor, University of Pennsylvania. He maintains a private practice limited to endodon-tics in Oslo, Norway. In addition to a textbook and

several chapters in other endodontic textbooks he has written more than 30 scientific papers on endodontics. He has given more than 100 national and international courses covering most of the topics related to endodontology.

Endodontic microsurgery: biological principles, treatment decision-making and clinical proceduresWith the introduction of CBCT technology for surgical planning, and microscopic instruments/devices such as surgical microscopes, micro blades, efficient ultrasonic retro-tips, and bio-compatible/active retrofilling materials such as bioceramics, the success rate of endodontic microsurgery has significantly improved. Current literature shows clearly that, when indicated, endodontic microsurgery leads to success rates higher than non-surgical retreatment. The topics discussed include:- Planning feasible treatment for post-treatment endodontic disease cases- The use of CBCT technology for diagnosis and surgical treatment plan-ning - Materials, instruments and techniques used during microsurgery procedures - Prognosis on endodontic non-surgical and surgical treatments

Micro CT studies have demonstrated that in-strumentation with round files leaves 45-55% of the canal walls untouched. A new expandable NiTi file technology for irregular root canal anatomies has been introduced and will be discussed. The XP-endo Finisher (XPeF) files have been designed using the shape-memory principle of NiTi alloys (MaxWire) that react depending on the temperature they are exposed to. 1. The technological challanges and possibillities of endodontic instru-ments to predictably remove intracanal infection. 2. Physical and clinical charesterristics of the new XPeF files. 3. The clinical use of the new XPeF files. 4. Preliminary micro-CT studies on the efficacy of removin hard and soft tissues left behind or produced during instrumentation.

Biokeramik) haben sich die Erfolgsquoten der endodontischen Mikrochirurgie erheblich verbessert. Die aktuelle Literatur bescheinigt ihr bei entsprechender Indikation eindeutig bessere Erfolgsquotenals der konservativen Revision. Themen des Vortrags: - Planung einer machbaren Behandlung bei posttherapeutischen endodontischen Erkrankungsfällen - Verwendung der DVT zur Diagnostik und chirurgischen Behandlungsplanung - Kenntnis der Werkstoffe, Instrumente und Techniken der Mikrochirurgischen Endodontie - Kenntnis der Prognose konservativer und chirurgischer endodontischer Revisionen.

Ausdehnung der NiTi-Technologie in der Endodontie:Die Komplexität des Wurzelkanalsystems lässt seine Reinigung zur Herausforderung werden. Micro-CT-Studien zeigen, dass die aufbereitung mit Rundfeilen nur 45-55% der Kanalwände erreicht. DVT für Behandlungsentscheiddungen in der Endodontie Die Einführung der DVT in die endodontische Praxis hat die Diagnostik und Therapie vorangebracht. In diesem Interaktiven Vortrag mit Fall-vorstellungen, in dem Behandlungspläne aus dem Auditorium diskutiert werden, werden die Vorteile der DVT dargestellt, wie die Diagnose resorptiver Läsionen oder von Schmerzen bei negativen periapikalen Röntgenbefunden. Aber auch Einschränkungen wie die Diagnose verti-kaler Wurzelfrakturen werden diskutiert und Fälle vorgestellt.

Treatment decision making in Endodontics using CBCT technologyThe introduction of Cone Bean Computer Tomography (CBCT) techno-logy in endodontic practice has improved the diagnosis and treatment of endodontic disease. In this interative lecture where cases will be presented and the audience may choose their treatment plans, the major advantages of CBCT will be highlighted such as in the diagnosis of resorptive lesions or in cases of pain with negative findings on the periapical radiographs. In addition limitations like the diagnosis of vertical root fractures will be discussed and cases presented.

Update PeriodontitisSPEAKER: PROF. DR. WIM THEUGELS, LEUVEN, BELGIUMProf. Teughels graduated in 2000 as a dentist at the KULeuven (Belgium). At the same university, he obtained in 2006 the degree of specialist in Periodontology and received the “EFP certificate in Periodontology”. In

2007, he was appointed assistant professor at the KULeuven with teaching obligations in the field of Periodontology and Human Anatomy. Currently, he works as an associate professor at the KULeuven and the University Hospitals Leuven.His research focuses on Periodontology and Oral Microbiology with a special emphasis on bacterial adhesion, microbial interactions, antimicrobials and probiotics. This has led to more than 80 publications in international journals and more than 10 chapters in books. He received several national and international

awards and is frequently invited for lectures regarding the concept of “probiotics”. In 2012, Prof. Teughels became an associate editor for the Journal of Periodontal Research and the “Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology” textbook. WIM TEUGHELS, LEUVEN, BELGIENProf. Teughels schloss sein Zahnmedizinstudium 2000 an der KU Leuven (Belgien) ab, wo er 2006 auch das “EFP Certificate in Periodontology” ablegte. 2007 wurde er dort Assistant Professor mit Lehrauftrag in Parodontologie und Anatomie des Menschen. Derzeit ist er an der KU Leuven und den Universitätskliniken Leuven als Associate Professor tätig. Seine Forschungsaktivitäten liegen auf dem Gebiet der Parodontologie und oralen Mikrobiologie mit Schwerpunkt auf bakteriellen Adhäsionsmechanismen, mikrobiellen Wechselwirkungen, Antimikrobiotika und Probiotika. Er hat über 80 Beiträge in internationalen Fachjournalen sowie mehr als 10 Buchkapitel publiziert und wurde mit verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Bis 1995 Leitender Oberarzt der Klinik für Orthopädische Rheumatologie, Schwerpunkt Endo-prothetik und Handchirurgie. Seit 1997 ist er Chefarzt der Klinik für Geriatrische Rehabilitation der Hessing-Stiftung in Augsburg. Die statistische Lebenserwartung steigt unaufhaltsam. Aber steigt auch das maximal mögliche Lebensalter, verlängert sich das Lebensalter tatsächlich? Was erwartet uns, wenn wir ein hohes Alter erreichen?
