Purpose of First Read
• Purpose: To turn the responsibility for using comprehension strategies over to the students as soon as possible to improve their learning performance and to discuss the connection of the stories to the theme.

“First Read” Procedures• A Concept/Question Board is accessible to the
students.
• Teacher models strategies using suggestions in the teacher’s guide from Link to the Theme (Found in Unit Overview-Exploring the Theme Chart). Also consider Theme Connections – Think About It at the end of the selection.
• Teacher reads orally to student in a shared read.
• Teacher models strategy use.
• Teacher gradually releases use of strategies to students. (As students become fluent, proficient readers they may read the selection independently and use the strategies themselves.)
