    MagnusLindbergwrotehisfirstorchestralscoreattheageof17,beforetakinganylessonsincomposition.Hewascuriousandnotafraidofgoinghisownway.Heconstructedmusicwithpost-Webernserialprocedures,asifhewastryingtoexplorethelimitsofacertainwayofmakingmusic.Theoretical,extremelycomplexstructureswerethendefying,andoftenexceeding,theskillsofthehumanperformer.

    YetatthesametimeLindbergusedtotakehismusictheorylessonsearlyonSaturdaymornings,playingtheclassicalrepertoirearrangedforpianoduetwithhisteacher.Knowingwhathadbeendonebythemastersbeforehimseemedtourgehimtotesttheboundaries.AshiscompositionteacherPaavoHeininenputit,“ifacomposercannotsaythathehasdonesomethingthathasnotbeendonebefore,hecannotsayhehasdoneanythingatall”.

    In1985cameKraft,astudyinrhythmandsound.ItwastheyoungLindberg’sRiteofSpring.Thebasicstructureandprocesseswerecalculatedusinganelaboratesoftwareprogram,butthefocuswasalreadydifferent.NowitlookedlikeLindbergwaschallengingthepossibilitiesofmusicalsound,usingscrapyardobjetstrouvésasinstrumentsalongwithtraditionalclassicalsounds.Musicburstoutwithraw,unrefinednoiseandprimitiveenergy,asintheperformancesofpunkbandsthathehadheardinBerlinclubs.“Onlytheextremeisinteresting”hedeclared.

    “Theorchestraismyfavouriteinstrument”statedLindberg,confirmingsomethingthatisclearalreadybylookingathisworklist.Aurafrom1994isanotherrevealingpieceofthejigsawpuzzlethatis,oneday,torevealthefullpictureofMagnusLindberg,thecomposer.SpiritualheirofSibelius,Lindbergtheiconoclastshowsthathe,too,isableandwillingtoembracesymphonicthinking.

    TechnicallythemusicofMagnusLindbergisbasedonasolidconstructionofharmonyandrhythm.Heoftendeploysachaconnetechnique,wherethemusicalnarrativeisbuiltoverarepeatedharmonicsequence.Despitethisthemusicdoesnotsoundtheoretical,duetothejuicysoundworld,teemingwithlife.Thereisaclearsenseofdramaturgyasifthemusicalcharacterswereprotagonistsinanabstractdrama.

    ION Inhismostrecentworks,especiallyintheconcertosforclarinet(�00�)andviolin(�006),hehasalsointroducedaclearmelodic

    aspectwhichwasnotsuchaprimaryconcerninhisearlieroutput.Aftersome30yearsofcompositionand80worksoneobservesthatMagnusLindbergisstillheading,withacharacteristiccuriosity,towardsunknownterritories,andyetremainingtruetowherehestarted.Insteadofconstructingpost-moderncollagesofothercomposers’music,hisworksareareflectionofaversatilepersonalitywhichdistilsmusichistoryoutofanabundanceofsonicinformation.Atruecomposer’sstatementinmusic.

    MagnusLindbergécrivitsespremièrespartitionsorchestralesdèsl’âgededix-septans,avantmêmed’étudierlacomposition,pousséparlacuriositéetsanscraindredes’engagerdanssapropredirection.IlconçutunemusiqueorientéepardesprocédéspostsérielsdanslalignéedeWebern,emportésemble-t-ilparcedésirdefranchirleslimitesd’uncadrecompositionelparticulier.Cefaisant,Lindbergédifiadesstructuresmusicalesd’unecomplexitéextrême,lesdifficultéstechniquesdesquellesauraienttrèscertainementexigerdesprouessesvertigineusesdesmeilleursinterprètesdel’époque.

    Toutefois,parallèlementàsesexpérimentations,Lindbergsuivit,tôtlesamedimatin,desleçonsd’analysemusicaleaucoursdesquellesiljouaitdesarrangementsdurépertoireclassiqueaupianoàquatremainsavecsonprofesseur.Laconnaissancedesœuvresdesmaîtresdupassél’incitaàs’essayerauxextrêmes,suivantencelalapositionexpriméeparsonprofesseurdecompositionPaavoHeininen:«Uncompositeurquinepourraitaffirmeravoirentreprisunedémarcheencoreinéditenesauraitprétendreavoirréaliséquoiquecesoit!»

    Lindberg,àcemoment-là,mettaitàl’épreuvelespossibilitésouvertesparlesonmusical,mêlantlessonoritésproduitespardes«objetstrouvés»recycléseninstrumentsetlestimbresclassiquestraditionnels.Samusique,d’uneénergieprimitive,explosaitenbruitsbrutsdénuésderaffinement,àl’imagedesconcertsdesensemblespunkqu’ilavaitentendusdanslesclubsberlinoisetconformémentàsonprincipeaffirmé:«Seull’extrêmeestintéressant.»

    «L’orchestreestmoninstrumentpréféré».CetaveudeMagnusLindbergconfirmecequitransparaîtdéjàdesaproduction.Aura,en1994,ajoutaunepiècenouvelleetsignificativeaupuzzlequirévélera,plustard,sonenverguredecompositeur.FilsspiritueldeSibelius,Lindberg,l’iconoclaste,s’ymontre,luiaussi,capabled’aborderlapenséesymphoniqueetrésoluàlefaire.

    Techniquement,lescompositionsdeMagnusLindbergsefondentsurunesolideconstructionharmoniqueetrythmique.Ilsesertsouventduprocédédelachaconneappuyantlaprogressionmusicalesuruneséquenceharmoniquerépétée.Samusiquerompt,néanmoins,aveccecôtédoctrinairegrâceàununiverssonoresavoureuxetdébordantdeviefaisantpreuved’unvraisensdramatiqueoùdespersonnagesmusicauxseraientlesprotagonistesd’undrameabstrait.

    Danssesœuvreslesplusrécentes,enparticulierleConcertopourclarinette(�00�)etleConcertopourviolon(�006),Lindbergintroduisitunedimensionmélodiqueabsentedespréoccupationsdesesproductionsprécédentes.Aprèstrenteannéesdecompositionetquelquesquatre-vingtsœuvresàsonactif,MagnusLindbergsetournetoujoursaveclamêmeaviditéversdesterritoiresinconnus,toutenrestantfidèleàsesdébuts.Loindescollagespostmodernesrencontréschezd’autres,sesœuvresreflètentunepersonnalitémultiplequidiffusesonhistoireàpartird’uneabondanteinformationacoustique.Lemessageducompositeurpassevéritablementparsamusique.

    GSiebzehnjährigschriebMagnusLindbergseineersteOrchesterpartitur,ohneKompositionsunterrichterhaltenzuhaben.UnerschrockenundvollerNeugierverfolgteerseineneigenenWeg.SeineMusikbautedamalsaufpost-Webern’schenseriellenPrinzipienauf,gleichsamalsgältees,dieGrenzenbestimmterKompositionstechnikenauszuloten.Dietheoretischen,extremkomplexenStrukturenfordertendieFähigkeitenderInterpretenheraus,überstiegensiebisweilenbewusst.

    ZudieserZeitbegannLindbergUnterrichtinMusiktheoriezunehmenundspieltedieklassischeLiteraturinKlavierbearbeitungenvierhändigmitseinemLehrerdurch.AngeregtdurchdasWissenumdieErrungenschaftenderMeister,schienerförmlichdaraufzudrängen,aufneuesGebietvorzustoßen–ganzimSinneseinesKompositionslehrersPaavoHeininen,dererklärte:„WenneinKomponistnichtvonsichsagenkann,etwasgetanzuhaben,wasvorihmnochniemandgetanhat,kannernichtbehaupten,überhauptetwasgetanzuhaben.“

    ImJahre1985entstandKraft,eineStudieinRhythmusundKlang.DamithattederjungeLindbergseinSacreduprintempsvorgelegt.ZwarhatteerdieGrundstrukturenundVerfahrenmitHilfeeinesaufwendigenComputerprogrammserrechnet,dochstandendiesenichtmehrimMittelpunkt.InzwischengingesLindbergeherdarum,dieMöglichkeitenmusikalischenKlangsbisandieGrenzenzutreiben–nebentraditionsverbundenenklassischenKlängenkamenauchobjetstrouvésvomSchrottplatzalsInstrumentezumEinsatz.DieMusikbrachmitrohem,unbändigemLärmundurtümlicherEnergiehervor,ähnlichdenPunkkonzerten,dieLindberginBerlinerClubserlebthatte.„NurdasExtremeistinteressant“,erklärteer.

    „DasOrchesteristmeinLieblingsinstrument“,bekannteLindberg,womitsichbestätigt,wasauchausderListeseinerWerkeersichtlichwird.Aura,ausdemJahr1994,isteinweiteresaufschlussreichesPuzzlestück,dasdazubeitragenwird,einesTageseinvollständigesBilddesKomponistenMagnusLindbergzusammenzufügen:AlsgeistigerErbevonSibeliuszeigtderBilderstürmerLindberg,dassaucherdenWillenunddieFertigkeitbesitzt,sinfonischesDenkeninseineKunstzuintegrieren.

    InseinenneuestenWerken,insbesonderedenKonzertenfürKlarinette(�00�)undVioline(�006),isteinklaresmelodischesElementerkennbar,wieesinLindbergsfrüherenWerkeneherimHintergrundstand.Nachgut30JahrenkompositorischenSchaffensund80Werkenistzubeobachten,dassMagnusLindbergsichnachwievor,mitseinercharakteristischenNeugier,inunbekannteGefildevorwagtunddabeigleichzeitigseinenAnfängentreubleibt.AnstattdieMusikandererKomponistenzupostmodernenCollagenzusammenzusetzen,reflektierenseineWerkeeinevielseitigePersönlichkeit,beidersichauseinerFülleklanglicherInformationMusik-Geschichteherauskristallisiert.EinwahrhaftesBekenntnisinMusik.
