Questions that come under this category are provided with various choices. You are asked to complete the sentences by filling in the blanks with the most suitable choice.
The questions for sentence completion can be related to any of the other areas of study i.e. science, literature, history, geography…. etc but the subject matter would not hinder your language abilities. You are asked to complete the sentence with the use of correct vocabulary.
These questions try to determine your ability to recognize the correct sentence structure and how you make the correct choice of vocabulary.
Techniques for Sentence Completion
For the sentence completion a few choices are given that could be selected for completing the sentences. Only one choice is correct out of the several choices. You have to complete the sentence by selecting the correct choice according to the vocabulary. For making the right choice you can benefit from the following techniques:
After you read the incomplete sentence, you do not have to look at the choices. Try to think about the correct answer yourself. If you think that you have completed the sentence and found the correct choice you can look at the list of choices. If the answer you thought matches one of the choices mentioned in the list that is most probably the right choice to be marked. If it does not match the choice, you can look for a synonym replacement. This strategy is very helpful in finding the right answer. It prevents you from confusing yourself with the wrong choices.
Do not select the choice hastily. Even if you are satisfied with your choice, try to substitute it with the other choices so that you can be more satisfied with your decision.
When you are asked to complete a sentence which has two spaces to be filled in, try to put the first word of every choice in the first blank. Note down the choice that you find best. Now for the second blank try every second choice of all choices. Note the choice that you think is the most appropriate. Check if the two selected choices are matching one of the given pair of choices. If it does, then select it as your correct choice, if not, then consider this pair as a wrong choice and attempt the other choices.
If you find difficulty in making sense out of certain words and you are not very familiar with them you can try to make an educated guess with reference to the context of the sentence. Try to break the word into various parts and analyze its meaning e.g. if you do not know the meaning of the word and you find the word unfamiliar to you, divide the word into its parts e.g. prefixes and suffixes. Thus, you can find this break up of words quite helpful in making out the right sense. If none of the techniques, works try making an educated guess with reference to the context.
When long and complex sentences confuse you then try to break that sentence into smaller more sentences by rephrasing it. After you divide it, compare it with the original sentence to avoid any misinterpretation. If you are satisfied, read the smaller sentences to get the idea more clearly.

Analogy questions
Analogy means similarity or describing likeness or a certain relation between two or more words. These questions request the student to analyze the relationship between two words in a pair and look for another similar or equivalent pair of words.
You are provided with four other pairs of words, and you are expected to match the original pair, which is given in the question, with one of the pairs in the given choices on the basis of similar relationships between them.
This exercise or such questions try to determine your understanding of vocabulary and your ability to recognize the relationship between words.
Techniques for Analogy Questions, you can follow the guidelines mentioned below :
Do not read the choices before you have analyzed the relationship between the pair of words, yourself. Try to understand the words more appropriately and think on which basis the relationship between the words is formed.
After you reach a conclusion, read the given choices afterwards to get a proper match with another pair which has the same relationship.
When you find yourself stuck with a word of difficult vocabulary, do not feel confused. Try to understand its meaning in reference to the context. And if it is somehow familiar, try to remember where and when you heard the word before. It can be a great help.
Sometimes you find that there is more than one pair that fits well to the question and is appropriate to the choice.
Then give the original pair a little more thought so that you can further study the relationship between the words and narrow it down to a more distinct one. After you are successful in finding a closer relationship, you can scrutinize the two other pairs that confused you earlier. Repeating the same procedure with these words would be very useful.
Do not get caught up by the tricks of the test makers. Sometimes the questions are provided with very tricky choices that misguide greatly. Try to think of every choice more specifically.
If you are familiar with the parts of speech and their nature, it can be beneficial in making a more sensible choice. Remember if the words in the original pair are a noun and an adjective, the correct choice you make should also contain the words in the same grammatical order.
Therefore, if you are confused with two pairs and cannot choose the correct choice you can easily look at their grammatical order and give preference to the pair of words that matches the original one.
Exclude the choice which you think is incorrect from your consideration.

Critical reading questions
As for questions related to critical reading, try to judge your reading skills and how you understand and interpret what you read. The verbal section of the GAT includes a few passages which require answering questions related to the passage.
Techniques for Critical Reading Exercises
There are a few techniques related to the critical reading questions. These techniques are considered as an effective guideline for solving such questions:
Do not read the questions before reading the whole passage. Try to skim through the whole passage and then read the questions to look for a more specific answer.
■ Read the passage quickly with understanding but don’t panic. Try to analyze what the whole passage is about and what message or main idea the author really intends to convey.
While reading, mark the lines where you think the passage carries the most important points. These strategies would definitely help you find the answers.
1 Synonyms:
Some words are linked together in a pair which means the same or has a similar dictionary definition.
For example: (Pretty - Beautiful). They are synonyms.
2 Describing qualities:
Some pairs of words contain some words in which one word describes the other word.
For example: (Heavy- Rain)
3 Class and member:
Some pairs have words which are based on class and member reference.
For example: (Electronics-Radio)
4 Antonyms:
Some pairs consist of the words which are opposite to each other.
For example: (Love- Hate)
5 Describing intensity:
Some pairs consist of the words in which one describes the intensity of the other.
For example: (Smile-Laughter)
6 Function:
In some pairs, a word describes the function of the other word.
For example: (Pen-Write)
7 Manners:
Some words in a speech describe the manners and behavior.
For example: (Polite-Speech)
Some pairs in a word describe the profession and its workplace.
For example: (Doctor-Clinic)
5EXCELLENCE IN GAT
When you find yourself stuck with a question, don’t waste your time on it and go ahead for the next question.
■ Sometimes answering other questions guide you for the earlier question. However, if you still cannot find the answer, mark it to be done in the end more calmly when you are having enough time to think.
Try to familiarize yourself with the types of critical reading questions. Once you know the nature of such questions, you will be able to find the answers more quickly.
1 Central idea :
Some questions request you to to explain the central idea or main theme of the whole passage. Sometimes, the opening and closing lines of each paragraph can give you a better clue about answering such questions properly.
2 Specific details :
Sometimes, in the purpose of analyzing your scanning abilities, you are asked to answer questions related to some specific details about the passage. Such questions are about ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘which’ and ‘who’. You can get the answers of this type of questions from the area of the passage which you marked in the first reading. They are the lines which contain the most important information included by the author.
3 Making inferences :
Most of the questions ask you to infer from the passages expressing your opinion about what is included in the paragraph. It is finding the implied meaning and making your own point of view.
These questions try to assess your judgment, so you must be clear in your mind about what the author is referring to and then make your own opinion according to your understanding of the text. Read and think about all the choices and analyze each one logically according to your comprehension rather than the author’s point of view.
4 Meaning in context :
Some selected words from the passage are pointed out and you are requested to explain them with reference to the context. This is to check your reading comprehension. Sometimes the word that describes something in a dictionary portrays it the other way when it appears in the context. The test tries to judge your ability to make sense of the word in the context.
5 Author’s approach:
Some questions ask you to explain the mood in which the author is writing and whether it is sarcastic, humorous, witty, sad… etc.
When you are asked questions like these, you can look for certain expressions, words, phrases or exclamations, which describe the tone, mood or style of the author. The feelings of the writer are mostly exhibited through choice of words. While answering these questions, read the message carefully observing particularly the use of words.
6 Title selection:
Some passages ask for selecting a title that best suits the passage. Remember that the chosen title shouldn’t be narrowly or broadly selected. Try to avoid choosing those titles that describe only one or two paragraphs but the one which is applicable to the whole passage and portrays it best.
The commonly asked questions for critical reading are as follows

Reading Comprehension
1 A newspaper reporter interviewed a farm-er who won top prizes for his corn in the farm-ers’ festival year after year. In the interview, the reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors . “How can you afford to share your best seed with your neigh-bors when they are entering corn in competi-tion with yours each year?” the reporter asked.
2 “Why sir,” said the farmer, “didn’t you know! The wind picks up pollen from the rip-ening corn and blows it from field to field. If my neighbors grow low quality corn, cross-pollina-tion will steadily lower the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neigh-bors grow good corn.” From his answer it is clear that the farmer is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor’s corn also improves.
3 So it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help their neighbors to live in peace. Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

Read the passage and answer the questions below:
Prince Henry the Navigator Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) was the son of King John I and Queen Philippa of Portu-gal. He was a leader in the early days of exploration. Although he was called Prince Henry the Navigator by the English people, Prince Henry never actually sailed on any of the voyages of discovery he sponsored. Instead, Prince Henry established a school for the study of the arts of navigation, map-making, and shipbuilding. This would allow sailors to better guide their ships and to come up with new ship designs. His goal was to find a route to the rich spice trade of the Indies and to explore the west coast of Africa. The ships that sailed the Mediterra-nean were too slow and too heavy to make these voyages. Under his direction, a new and lighter ship was developed, the cara-vel, which would allow sea captains to sail further and faster.
Despite the creation of the caravel and the knowledge shared at his school for sailors, Prince Henry had a great deal of difficul-ty persuading his captains to sail beyond Cape Bojodor off the west coast of Africa. According to legend, beyond this point in an area known as the “Green Sea of Dark-ness,” the sun was so close to the Earth that a person’s skin would burn black, the sea boiled, ships caught on fire, and mon-sters hid waiting to smash the ships and eat the sailors.
It took fourteen voyages over a period of 12 years until a ship finally reached the equa-tor. During the two-year period from 1444 to
Prince Henry the Navigator
Reading comprehension 1446, Prince Henry intensified the explora-tion of Africa, sending between 30 and 40 of his ships on missions. The last voyage spon-sored by Prince Henry sailed over 1,500 miles down the African coast. Although he never sailed on the expeditions, the voyag-es that he paid for in the mid-1400s helped launch Portugal into the front of the race to find a sea route to the Indies.

Read the passage and answer the questions below:
In 2009, the world’s most profitable car manufacturer, Porsche, has announced in a press release it will build a four-door car, to hit the roads in 2009. The luxury carmaker will invest $1.2 billion on the new vehicle. Porsche expects the new car, to be called the “Panamera”, to sell somewhere in the region of 20,000 mod-els a year, which would make it the com-pany’s best-selling vehicle. The Stuttgart based factory is famed for the other three models that make up the Porsche line-up– the Boxster, the 911 sports car and the Cayenne SUV. Porsche’s announce-ment confirms rumors that have been rife on the Internet that “some delectable new creation” would be emerging from the company.
The car is to be built solely by Porsche in Stuttgart and bear the “Made in Ger-many” hallmark of quality. Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, the President and CEO of Porsche, said: “The Panamera is the right car as it has all the typical DNA charac-teristics of a genuine sports car. In terms of performance, design, and driving dy-namics, it meets Porsche’s high stand-ards in every respect. We are making our customers an attractive offer in the top performance segment.” The car will com-pete against other luxury family oriented models from Mercedes, Maserati, Aston Martin and Bentley. Porsche looks set to continue its uncanny knack of producing top quality automobiles for top profits.

The explosion of a star is an awesome event. The most violent of these cataclysms, which produce supernovae, probably de-stroys a star completely. Within our galaxy of roughly 100 billion stars the last super-
nova was observed in 1604. Much smaller explosions, however, occur quite frequently, giving rise to what astronomers call novae and dwarf novae. On the order of 25 novae occur in our galaxy every year, but only two or three are near enough to be observed. About 100 dwarf novae are known altogeth-er. If the exploding star is in a nearby part of the galaxy, it may create a “new star” that was not previously visible to the naked eye. The last new star of this sort that could be observed clearly from the Northern Hem-isphere appeared in 1946. In these small-er explosions the star loses only a minute fraction of its mass and survives to explode again. Astrophysicists are fairly well satis-fied that they can account for the explosions of supernovae. The novae and dwarf novae have presented more of a puzzle. From re-cent investigations that have provided im-portant new information about these two classes of exploding star, the picture that emerges is quite astonishing. It appears that every dwarf nova – and perhaps every nova – is a member of a pair of stars. The two stars are so close together that they re-volve around a point that lies barely outside the surface of the larger star. As a result the period of rotation is usually only a few hours, and their velocities range upward to within a two-hundredth of the speed of light.

In the sixteenth century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration, Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail around the world. As a young Portuguese noble, he served the king of Portugal, but he became involved in the quagmire of political intrigue at court and lost the king’s favor. After he was dismissed from service to the king ain.
of Portugal, he offered to serve the future Emperor Charles V of Spain.
A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees W longitude to Spain and all the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan offered to prove that the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one of these ships was exploring the topography of South America in search of a water route across the continent. This ship sank, but the remaining four ships searched along the southern peninsula of South Amer-ica. Finally they found the passage they sought near a latitude of 50 degrees S. Ma-gellan named this passage the Strait of All Saints, but today we know it as the Strait of Magellan.
One ship deserted while in this passage and returned to Spain, so fewer sailors were privileged to gaze at that first panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Those who remained crossed the meridian we now call the Inter-national Date Line in the early spring of 1521 after ninety-eight days on the Pacific Ocean. During those long days at sea, many of Ma-gellan’s men died of starvation and disease.
Later Magellan became involved in an insu-lar conflict in the Philippines and was killed in a tribal battle. Only one ship and seventeen sailors under the command of the Basque navigator Elcano survived to complete the westward journey to Spain and thus prove once and for all that the world is round, with no precipice at the edge.

TsunamiThese huge waves wreak terrific damage
when crash on the shores of distant lands or continents. Under a perfectly sunny sky and from an apparently calm sea, a wall of wa-ter may break twenty or thirty feet high over beaches and waterfronts, crushing houses and drowning unsuspecting residents and bathers in its path. How are these waves formed? When a submarine earthquake oc-curs, it is likely to set up a tremendous amount of shock, disturbing the quite waters of the deep ocean. This disturbance travels to the surface and forms a huge swell in the ocean many miles across. It rolls outward in all di-rections, and the water lowers in the center as another as another swell looms up. Thus a series of concentric swells are formed similar to those made when a coin or small pebble is dropped into a basin of water. The big dif-ference is in the size. Each of the concentric rings of basin water traveling out toward the edge is only about an inch across and less than a quarter of an inch high. The swells in the ocean are sometimes nearly a mile wide and rise to several multiple of ten feet in height. Many of us have heard about these waves, called “tsunami”. Nothing was done about tsu-namis until after World War II. An underwater earthquake in the Aleutian Islands could start a swell that would break along the shores and cause severe damage. These waves travel hundreds of miles an hour, and one can un-derstand how they would crash!

Marie Curie was one of the most accom-plished scientists in history. Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered ra-dium, an element widely used for treating cancer, and studied uranium and other ra-dioactive substances. Pierre and Marie’s amicable collaboration later helped to un-lock the secrets of the atom.
Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Po-land, where her father was a professor of physics. At the early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a blithe personality. Her great exuberance for learning prompted her to continue with her studies after high school. She became disgruntled, howev-er, when she learned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women. Determined to receive a higher education, she defi-antly left Poland and in 1891 entered the Sorbonne, a French university, where she earned her master’s degree and doctorate in physics.

Marie was fortunate to have stud-ied at the Sorbonne with some of the
greatest scientists of her day, one of whom was Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre were married in 1895 and spent many productive years working together in the physics lab-oratory. A short time after they discovered radium, Pierre was killed by a horse-drawn wagon in 1906. Marie was stunned by this horrible misfortune and endured heartbreak-ing anguish. Despondently she recalled their close relationship and the joy that they had shared in scientific research. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by herself greatly increased her distress.
Curie’s feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was asked to succeed her hus-band as a physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was the first woman to be given a pro-fessorship at the world-famous university. In 1911 she received the Nobel Prize in chem-istry for isolating radium. Although Marie Cu-rie eventually suffered a fatal illness from her long exposure to radium, she never became disillusioned about her work. Regardless of the consequences, she had dedicated her-self to science and to revealing the mysteries of the physical world.

Sentence completion :
Technology is rapidly expanding the scope of capabilities for both professional and person-
al use; such is the case with smart phones. Pro-fessionals now have devices available to them capable of digital media, internet access, phone communication, multi-person scheduling and office tools for documents and presentations. Businesspeople that are often mobile may max-imize the use of these critical features on smart phones.
Individuals who simply enjoy the luxury of mul-ti-function devices often use these devices for friv-olous pursuits such as downloading catchy ring tones, instant messaging about the latest gossip and looking up the world record for most cans crushed on one’s head during the Super bowl. This fusion of capabilities and increased availa-bility of such devices could be a sign of a growing blend in society between work and personal life, or individuals could simply be taking a luxurious approach to their connectivity in personal lives.

We are profoundly ignorant about the origins of language and have to content ourselves with more or less plausible speculations. We do not even know for certain when language arose, but it seems likely that it goes back to the earliest history of man, perhaps half a million years. We have no direct evidence, but it seems probable that speech arose at the same time as tool making and the ear-liest forms of specifically human cooperation. In

the great Ice Ages of the Pleistocene period, our earliest human ancestors
established the Old Stone Age culture; they made flint tools and later tools of bone, ivory, and
antler; they made fire and cooked their food; they hunted big game, often by methods that called for considerable cooperation and coordination. As their material culture gradually improved, they be-came artists and made carvings and engravings on bones and pebbles, and wonderful paintings of animals on the walls of caves. It is difficult to be-lieve that the makers of these Paleolithic cultures lacked the power of speech.
It is a long step admittedly, from the earliest flint weapons to the splendid art of the late Old Stone Age. The first crude flints date back perhaps to 500,000 B.C. While the finest achievements of Old Stone Age man are later than 100,000 B.C., and in this period, we can envisage a corresponding development of language, from the most primitive and limited language of the earliest human groups to a fully developed language in the flowering time of Old Stone Age culture. How did language arise in the first place?
There are many theories about this, based on various types of indirect evidence, such as the language of children, the language of primitive societies, the kinds of changes that have taken place in languages in the course of recorded his-tory, the behavior of higher animals like chimpan-zees, and the behavior of people suffering from speech defects. These types of evidence may provide us with useful pointers, but they all suffer from limitations, and must be treated with caution.
When we consider the language of children, we have to remember that their situations are quite different from that of our earliest human ancestors because the child is growing up in an environment where there is already a fully developed language, and this is surrounded by adults who use that lan-guage and are teaching it to him.
For example, it has been shown that the earliest words used by children are mainly the names of things and people (“Doll,” “Spoon,” “Mummy”), but this does not prove that the earliest words of prim-itive man were also the names of things and peo-

ple. When a child learns the name of an object, he may then use it to express his wishes or demands:
“Doll!: often means “Give me my doll!” Or “I’ve dropped my doll:
pick it up for me!” The child is using language to get things done, and it is almost an accident of adult teaching that the words used to formulate the child’s demands are mainly nouns, instead of words like “Bring!”’ “Pick up!” and so on.
