Using ComponentOne Controls in Visual Studio

ComponentOne products easily integrate with Visual Studio – simply install a product and controls will appear in the Visual Studio Toolbox. From there, all you need to do is create a new application and perform a drag-and-drop operation to add the ComponentOne controls onto the form. Designers and wizards make it easy to bind controls to data and to customize the appearance and behavior of the controls.

Title ComponentOne Provides Fast, Cost-effective Data Visualization Controls for Windows 8

Summary TSBITS Inc. needed to build a new Windows 8 application that would provide dynamic response to large, fast-changing data sets. At the same time, the company had to respond to a fast time to market as well as the Microsoft approval process for inclusion in the Windows 8 Store. By utilizing custom controls provided by ComponentOne and its Studio for WinRT XAML product, ITSBITS was able to meet these challenges and even lay the groundwork for deploying its application across more devices and platforms.

Situation ITSBITS, a Trussville, AL-based software development company, began building its first Windows 8 application as soon as beta code became available. ITSBITS’ brainchild, called “Burn the Mortgage” and internally known as BTM, is a consumer-oriented application that allows users to explore monthly mortgage payment scenarios that could save up to $100,000 or more in interest over the life of their mortgage. The company invested time into both development as well as the learning curve required to program effectively for the new operating system. However, getting BTM ready for the Windows 8 Store presented ITSBITS with several challenges.

The application needed to present an attractive consumer-oriented look and feel that would look and work equally well on both a Windows 8 desktop and a Windows RT tablet, and eventually the Windows 8 Phone. This look and feel also had to conform to the Windows 8 Store UI guidelines, which would be subject to an approval process. Next, as customers played out different “what if” scenarios, ITSBITS had to be sure that BTM displayed results quickly no matter what the underlying CPU hardware might be. To support Windows RT devices, BTM would have to provide a fast yet still visually effective and attractive response to fast changing data on low-strength CPU devices. Last, the application had to be ready in time for the 2012 holiday season, which represented a significant time crunch for a small development shop.

Benefit Studio for WinRT XAML controls met ITSBITS’ current needs with unexpected ease. Upon receiving Studio for WinRT XAML, ITSBITS tested Chart for WinRT XAML in multiple scenarios and found the control to be fast and reliable. ITSBITS also found that Studio for WinRT XAML integrated seamlessly into the new Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 development platform. ITSBITS easily undertook this integration in-house and built a test-viable trial of the application using the new Chart control on top of its existing code base in less than a day. “We really liked this, and not just because it was easy,” says Allison. “We have plans for BTM that go beyond the Windows 8 platform, and Visual Studio helps with that because it supports so many development stacks, like HTML5 and JavaScript. Because ComponentOne’s suite of controls snapped into Visual Studio so cleanly, we know we can still use it when we code for other platforms.”

Title Tenfold Increase in Productivity Using ComponentOne Controls

Summary Farrokh Tabatabai, Ph.D. from LifeLink Foundation, Inc., Tampa, Florida uses ComponentOne Studio Enterprise components and has created an application to view information collectively with ComponentOne FlexGrid.

Situation The Transplantation Immunology Laboratory at LifeLink Foundation analyzes and monitors the performance of hundreds of DNA probes that are used to tissue type transplant candidates and potential donors.

The application Farrokh developed with C1FlexGrid accumulates raw data then displays all relevant parameters from each individual assay and sorts by reaction strength. This allows the user to quickly assess whether a probe has a "clean" history of reactivity or exhibits "false positive" and/or "false negative" reactions. If "false" reactions are observed, the filter and sort features of C1 are very helpful in determining which genes (if any) are associated with these "false" reactions. This information is then used to update the interpretive algorithm. This not only makes future interpretation faster, but can actually improve the resolution of the assay.

Benefit he application is totally dynamic in creating eventual analyses outputs based on results from lab instruments (ad hoc) and long-term back-end databases. This allows LifeLink the freedom of adding and comparing reactions. For interpretation of an individual typing (as opposed to the analysis of the reactivity a single probe over many typings as described above), the application color codes the reactions of all probes in the set, making it easy to identify any potentially missed or extra reactions for that typing.

Before Farrokh developed this application, reactions were evaluated manually on paper. Now they can easily sort and search the reactions. This leads to at least a tenfold increase in productivity as end users can get instant answers to what matters and what does not.

Title ActiveReports helped Bit-Wizards move the EPARS reporting system into the future by offering a web service solution.

Summary Bit-Wizards designed the EPARS retirement finance tool for TSA Consulting Group, which lets employees of school systems across the country manage their retirement accounts. Users can manage funds and generate reports through the EPARS web interface.

Situation When TSA Consulting Group needed a powerful and easy-to-use financial application that streamlined the processing and compliance analysis of thousands of individual retirement transactions, they called Bit-Wizards, a managed Microsoft Gold Partner headquartered in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The proposed system had to be able to manage millions of dollars in financial transactions, be adaptable for ever-changing IRS tax policies, integrate with existing accounting applications, and of course be simple to administer. The system that Bit-Wizards created became Electronic Process for Automated Remittance Service, or EPARS.

Benefit “ActiveReports was an ideal solution because we were already using it within the web site, but in a manner that was not conducive to supporting the future expected growth. Our existing ActiveReports solution, due to the size and complexity of the reports, was actually maxing out the memory limitations of the ASP.NET framework. We found an article on the GrapeCity website that described how to create a reporting service with ActiveReports. Matt Parry-Hill, Bit-Wizards Lead Developer, used that article as the baseline of our custom reporting solution. Some critical capabilities that we added were separating the report generation from the actual web server, queuing report requests, and creating a multi-threaded backend service. The resulting solution has since processed over half a million reports without a single outage.”

Since its implementation, EPARS has handled over half a million reports, with no performance problems. Use of EPARS has grown from 20 to over 1,000 school districts, and it generates an average of over 4,000 reports a day.
