A complex clause gives us extra information about a sentence.

It is introduced by a linking word or word phrase:① CONTRAST although, though, in spite of the

fact that, despite the fact that

② PURPOSE so (that)

③ REASON because, as, since

④ RESULT so … that, such … that

⑤ When a complex clause begins a sentence, we use a comma to separate the two clauses.

He still did the bungee jumping ALTHOUGH he was scared.

ALTHOUGH he was scared, he still did the bungee jump.

IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT he had been studying a lot, he failed the exam.
