    Significant achievement of the 5th guru( Arjun dev ji)

    Guru ji was born on 15 April 1563.

    Father- Guru Ramdas ji.

    Mother- Bibi Bhani

    Wife- Ganga

    Son- Hargobind ji.

    (Adi Granth composed by the 5thGuru , also known as Guru

    Granth Sahib occupies same place as Vedas for Hindus, Bible forChristians, and Quran for Muslims.

    Need:-

    Due to expansion of Sikhism it was difficult to preach directly to

    all the followers.

    Requirement of authentic book to save the religion.

    To save the Sikhs from going astray.

    Poetic tendency of Guru Arjun dev ji.

    Collection and Compilation of Material

    From Baba Mohan- the son of the 3rd Guru.

    Collected the hymns of previous Gurus.

    The composition of various- Saints, Bhatts, Bards etc.

    The site of compilation is- Ramsar.

    Final subscription by Bhai Gurdas- dictated by Guru Arjun Dev

    ji.

    Finally Completed in the year 1604.

    Installed in Harmandir Sahib in 1604.

    The first granthi was Bhai Buddha.

    The book closes with- Mundvani followed by Rag Mala with a list

    Figures of speech and parables are taken from Upnishads, Puransand even from Islamic traditions.

    Language:- Gurmukhi- Panjabi of 15th and 16th century.

    Nature of the Book

    No biographical sketch.

    No reference of any miracle performed by any Guru.

    No Law of inheritance or marriage etc.

    Explicit in belief that whatever is contained in hymns is true.

    Significance of the compilation

    The first sacred book of the Sikhs.

    A light house of the Sikhs.

    Timeless Guru after Guru Gobind Singh ji(the 10th Guru)

    Embodies the true Vanis of the Gurus.

    Independent identity to Sikhisim.

    Useful and authentic source for the construction of the

    history of Punjab of that time.

    It is a book divine wisdom than the word of God.
