Second we would like to thank all the fencers that participated in the competition for helping in

making it the third largest fencing competition held in Sweden and probably the largest Nordic

Championships yet, and helping in making it as good as it was.

Venue

The competition was held at Fyrishov in Uppsala. The two main halls were used, together with the

corridor outside of Hall A, the new gymnastics hall and Upsala Fäktning’s fencing hall.

Equipment

The fencing equipment was rented from Stockholm’s Fencing Federation and the Swedish

Multisports Federation.

Personnel

All personnel (except the ones acknowledged above) were members of Upsala Fäktning. A few non-

members were also recruited.

Nordic Champions

The following people were named Nordic Champion during the competition and received the Nordic

Fencing Union’s gold medal (all except the veterans, who received the Swedish Fencing Federation’s

medals).

Injuries

The competition was at large spared from serious injuries. One injury, though, required a trip to the

hospital. During the poule of the men’s cadet competition one fencer somehow got some small

pieces of metal in his eye. The medical personnel sent him to the hospital, where the metal was

removed. The club of the injured fencers has promised to examine the fencer’s mask and report its

findings.

Things of interest

One error was made in the results reported on the internet; the wrong person was reported as

winner of the women’s U/13 competition, but the error was corrected the same day.

the head referee of the competition).

The organiser deserves recognition for the good preparations and in many cases excellent arrangements to provide good conditions for fencers and officials. The scheduling and timing of the events were very well executed. In total, the competitions had 453 entries. From a refereeing perspective, the important negotiations with the participating delegations had been realised before the competitions and all participating federations were represented with referees. Also, efforts had been made to acquire additional capacity of qualified refrees. A referee room had been prepared for meetings and also refreshments, coffee and sandwiches during the day. It was not sufficient, however, to secure neutral referees in every match. With the number of participants, a much higher number of referees from other countries would have been needed. There is a difficulty that the federations only take as their responsibility the participation in the ”official” categories. The participation in the U15 and U13 are regarded as club responsibilities. The referee obligation for the Estonian delegation was upheld only by coaches who had many other tasks, something which caused some discussions. General opinion on refereeing level The refereeing level was good at the competitions. The rules for competitions were followed and the general order during the competitions was disciplined. The participants enjoyed fair conditions and the number of complaints was low. Sanctions The Estonian fencer Margo LEHIS received a black card in the T-16 of the men’s cadet competition for unsportsmanlike behaviour after spitting on the floor.
