2017 Annual Report - Waikiki Health • 3

Sheila Beckham, MPH Chief Executive Officer

Howard Lee President, Waikiki Health Board of Directors

The past year has been another one of change and excitement! In April 2017, we celebrated our 50th year as a community health center with a fun-filled gala. In response to the increased demand for services among our patients, as well as the influx of new patients, we expanded the clinical space at our Makahiki Clinic. We built-out the third floor, adding eleven additional exam rooms along with office and laboratory space. We are augmenting our primary care services with minor surgery and are increasing accessibility to our optometry services.

At our annual conference of the National Association of Community Health Centers, in Washington DC, we had the unique opportunity to meet with a few

Congressional committee representatives. This has been particularly helpful as we navigate the health care arena.

During the past year, we have begun reaching out to incarcerated individuals who are re-entering the community. Our staff is working diligently to ensure that their healthcare and shelter needs are being met. Finally, our Care-A-Van clinic was converted to a primary care clinic, serving all people whether homeless or not. We are building capacity at that site as well.

As we celebrate 50 wonderful years of serving the Hawaii community, let us not forget the people who made it all happen. Our mission of assuring access to quality health care for underserved individuals, families and children who have few, if any, alternatives for affordable health care could not be accomplished without strong leadership, a mission driven staff, our many volunteers and our generous donors.

At a time when our nation’s healthcare system seems to be directionless, Waikiki Health stands out as a beacon of hope ready to help those regardless of their ability to pay. With our three comprehensive medical and behavioral health

sites and four sites providing medical care with a special focus, Waikiki Health serves a variety of needs including two serious issues we face today, homelessness and substance abuse. The word “Community” does not get lost in health center. We encourage you to read our annual report and decide for yourself the value that we bring to “OUR” community. Mahalo!

Mahalo to Donors(For your donation in 2016)

By supporting Waikiki Health through your monetary and in-kind donations, you help us succeed in our mission to provide health and social services to everyone in our community, regardless of ability to pay. Thank you for your generous support.

Reaching For The Stars: 50 Years of ServiceOn April 22, 2017, Waikiki Health celebrated its 50th birthday in grand style at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with our “Reach for the Stars” Fundraising Gala. Nearly 400 community supporters, donors and employees (47 in all!) came out to join in the festivities. The evening was full of glitz and glamour, and launched with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live acoustic music. Our silent auction included more than 60 items ranging from $50 gift certificates up to several stay-cation packages valued from $700 to $2,200 each.

Francine Dudoit-Tagupa, Director of Native Hawaiian Healing, started the program by performing the traditional Oli, followed by warm opening remarks from our board member, Phyllis Dendle. A special historical video also was shared with the audience, illustrating our humble beginnings and where we are today.

The evening’s award presentation, honoring the legacies of Healthcare Giants, Dr. Max Botticelli, Dr. Irwin Schatz and Dr. Neal Winn, commenced with opening remarks from CEO Sheila Beckham, followed by heart-felt comments about each “giant” by CMO Dr. Elliot Kalauawa. Family representatives for the legacy honorees were on-hand to receive the awards, including Senator Brian Schatz and his brother, Stephen, on behalf of their father, Dr. Irwin Schatz.

Our anniversary was supported by a total of 22 corporate sponsors who purchased table packages starting at $3,000

up to $7,000. Individual donors (and staff) also supported the fundraiser by purchasing tickets for $150. On April 22, Waikiki Health’s mission was shared with a diverse new group of potential donors present in the audience, providing new opportunities for future support – going beyond our traditional donors and Reaching for the Stars. Mahalo for your support!

Makahiki Medical and Dental ClinicMakahiki Medical & Dental Clinic transformed its entire third floor – previously housing administrative offices – into 11 additional new exam rooms, a behavioral health counseling office, a labs area, providers and clinical support staff offices, optometry offices, and additional patient service areas. Together with the facility’s 8 existing exam rooms on the 2nd floor, Makahiki is now the largest clinic within the agency, housing 19 medical exam rooms, 7 dental operatories, plus our full-service pharmacy on the third floor.

Construction, which started in January, was complete July 3, at which time CEO, Sheila Beckham, Native Hawaiian Healing Director, Francine Dudoit-Tagupa, and Director of Operations, Jay Tamashiro, participated in a traditional Hawaiian blessing. Once fully staffed, the 3rd floor will have 9 new healthcare employees, plus 2 additional full time MDs. Marketing efforts to drive new

patient traffic to the Makahiki Clinic included revised commercials on KGMB/KHNL TV, direct mail pieces to the surrounding neighborhoods, an ad in Honolulu Family Magazine’s “Back to School” issue, plus local press coverage in Pacific Business News. Waikiki Health’s Director of Operations, Jay Tamashiro, had been working on the logistics for this project since October of 2016, and funds to support the initiative came from private donations and patient service revenues.

A young patient visits with Waikiki Health’s Dental Director, Dr. Rachel DiPasquale.

to donorsPu uhonua – “a safe place of healing”: Pre-/Post-release Assistance to Oahu InmatesWaikiki Health’s “Pu uhonua” initiative provides a support system of education and encouragement to inmates – targeting Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders – incarcerated in Oahu correctional facilities and prisons. While “Pu’uhonua” is presented in a cultural framework, it is designed to inform, motivate and inspire any inmate. The program reduces barriers to accessing services and provides tools for achieving success.

The “Pu uhonua” pilot was developed and implemented in 2016 by Waikiki Health’s Director of Native Hawaiian Healing, Francine Dudoit-Tagupa. “Aunty Fran” provides health education interventions to Oahu inmates, helping them create their “Going Home Plan for Success.” She is accompanied by a Waikiki Health insurance eligibility specialist, who informs inmates about their health insurance options, and helps them apply for insurance, SNAP, Social Security, state IDs, birth certificates, and other needs, so that upon release the inmate’s applications can be submitted promptly. Inmates are offered a medical home at Waikiki Health, and provided linkages to Waikiki Health’s Next Step Shelter, job training programs, and other resources.

A collaboration with many other partners, “Pu uhonua” aims to reduce recidivism, encourage community reintegration, promote family reunifications whenever possible, and break the cycle of incarceration. “Pu uhonua” has achieved the following results: (July through December 2016): 830 inmates received health education interventions; and 467 released inmates found a medical home at Waikiki Health.

Aunty Fran has served as Waikiki Health’s Director of Native Hawaiian Healing since 1998, is a member of the agency’s Leadership Team, and has been a Registered Nurse and Native Hawaiian Healing Practitioner since 1978. She has achieved more than 15 years of education and over 25 years of practice in healing modalities of Lomilomi, Ho’oponopono, La’au Lapa’au and La’au Kahea. She also serves as a Cultural Advisor for the Board of the Chaminade School of Nursing.

Care-A-Van Doubles Exam Rooms, Increases StaffWaikiki Health’s Care-A-Van Clinic, located in Kaimuki, recently doubled the number of its exam rooms from two to four to accommodate more patients; improved the facility’s behavioral health counseling office to provide greater patient privacy; and augmented its staff, adding a physician, nurse practitioner, licensed clinical social worker, medical assistant and a patient services representative.

The Care-A-Van Clinic has achieved the status of a Patient-Centered Medical Home, Level 3, (the highest level), offering primary and preventive care to the general community, with emphasis placed on reaching those in need. The facility, which welcomes residents of neighboring Palolo, St. Louis Heights and Wilhemina Rise, is the only primary care clinic serving those areas that takes Medicaid and accepts uninsured patients.

In 2016, the Care-A-Van Clinic provided 3,628 medical and behavioral health visits to 2,229 patients.

“It’s humbling to be part of an organization that has a deep connection to the community. The fact that Waikiki Health has been an integral part of serving our community is a testament to the trust our patients have for our staff and providers. I look forward to Waikiki Health’s next 50 years of service.” Dr. Rachel DiPasquale, Dental Director
