Compassion

A pastor in north Idaho was going through a very difficult time dealing with the stress of his job. He really didn’t

have a whole lot of people to talk to, and started wondering what he was going to do. He found himself thinking that he was a failure, and couldn’t do this job

anymore because of the stress. He would go home and find that the stress didn’t end there.

His wife would tell him that everything was going to be alright. His congregation loved him, but his stress didn’t go away. He sat at his desk trying to deal with it until he decided to pick up the phone and call someone. Who would he call? The only person that he could think of was a person in the church that he knew would listen.

When the person picked up the phone, the pastor asked if he could take the time to talk to him. The response was warm and kind,”If you need me I’m here.” Tears came from the pastor’s eyes, as this was what he needed. It was not all the good counsel in the world that helped him, or the people that told him what he wanted to hear. It was just a person who cared, a person that would listen.

Who do you have in your life that you care for?

What have you done to show this person that you care?

Who do you know at home or work that you have a hard time with?

How do have compassion on them?

It’s easy to have compassion on them that love you, but how about the people that dislike you? Do you ask, “How did they get that way?”

Be compassionate. You never know who might show up on the

jury at your trial. The test for real compassion is asking yourself

what you have done for your neighborhood. When is the last time you visited a widow? When is the last time you took a young child without a father with you to have some fun? Or the last time you

took the lowest paid person out to lunch?

Real compassion comes from the spiritual side of man.
