There are numerous aspen stands prescribed for cutting this entry period. The majority of these stands are mature and ready to be regenerated. There are a couple of stands that are slightly younger that have a significant amount of balsam fir and spruce in them. The Spruce Budworm is present throughout this compartment, including in these stands. The intent is to harvest these stands prior to mortality occurring and regenerating the aspen. A low quality/vigor aspen stand will be converted to red pine. There are five good to high quality northern hardwood stands that will be thinned as well. A number of mature lowland conifer stands will also be harvested. There is significant tamarack mortality throughout the compartment, so the intention is to salvage/harvest as much as we can before it all dies. It is also important to open these stands up for regeneration while the tamarack seed is still viable. The majority of the lowland ash/hardwood stands are prescribed for harvest. This intent is to harvest/regenerate these stands prior to the arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer. There are also a couple of red maple/pine stands that will be treated. A couple of these stands were shelterwood cut in the past and now the regeneration needs to be released, so the overstory needs to be removed. There is some Autumn Olive in the southeastern part of the compartment that needs to be removed/sprayed. The primary soils in this compartment are Tawas-Deford, Lupton-Tawas, Deford mucky find sand, Onaway fine sandy loam, and Rousseau fine sand. The upland soils range are mostly level with some steep ridges and knolls mixed in, and they are well drained. The lowland is level and is very poorly drained. This compartment is on the northern end of a block of state land that is approximately 8 miles wide and 20 miles long, that extends into Delta County. This compartment is primarily blocked in on the east, north, and south with adjoining state land. The western edge of the compartment borders private property. There are a number of houses and camps along the western edge of the compartment. The primary uses of this area are hunting, camping, cross country skiing and ORV riding. The Cedar River flows through the eastern edge of the compartment. None Known None The Cedar River and Devil's Creek flow through this compartment. Currently this compartment is comprised of a large acreage of aspen and northern hardwoods, particularly in the south half. The north half of the compartment has more lowland conifer present. The management treatments this decade are to regenerate mature aspen stands which will benefit early successional wildlife species. Some lowland conifer stands will be cut due to the presence of spruce budworm and eastern larch beetle. In addition, upland mixed deciduous stands will be clearcut and will provide good early successional wildlife habitat. Game species including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, and woodcock will benefit from the creation of early successional habitat. The dense stands of cedar will be retained for wildlife cover. Forest stands along the Big Cedar River have been protected with a designation of “special conservation area”. This designation will allow trees to grow larger, develop cavities for dens and nest sites, and provide woody debris on the forest floor - to the benefit of riparian wildlife species. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions

Vehicle Access:

Survey Needs:

Recreational Facilities and Opportunities:

Fire Protection:

Additional Compartment Information:

Surface sediments consist of lacustrine sand and gravel and medium-textured glacial till. The glacial drift thickness varies between 10 and 50 feet. The Ordovician Trenton and Black River formations underlie the glacial drift, and the Trenton Formation is quarried for stone near Escanaba. State land in this area has not been leased previously. An overgrown gravel pit is located in Section 19 and there is potential on the upland drumlins. No economic oil and gas production has been found in the UP.

The primary access roads into and through this compartment are County Roads 366, 551, D-4, No 29, and Westman Dam. There are numerous two track roads that branch off of these county roads that provide additional access.

Approximately 15 registered corners will need to be established.

The Forest Island ORV Trail and the Cedar River Pathway run through the southeastern portion of the compartment - east of the Cedar River. The primary recreational uses of this area are hunting, camping, ORV riding, horseback riding, and cross country skiing.

This compartment poses a low risk for any large scale fires. The dry upland areas are interspersed with lowland areas. The only significant threat would be, is if we do not harvest the majority of the spruce/fir prior to the Spruce Budworm causing a substantial amount of mortality. The main water sources would be Cedar River and Devil's Creek. Access in the spring could be an issues on some of the two track roads.

Harvest Clearcut with Retention

Overall very poor quality stand. The cedar is short and with low diameters. There are some pockets of good quality tamarack, but most of them have died recently due to the Eastern Larch Beetle. The area that is prescribed for harvest has some mortality already. Look at the other tamarack pockets when this sale is set up to see if any of the others have enough merchantable wood left. Old next step comments:

Cut all trees greater than 3" inches. The retention will be the portion of the stand not designated for cutting.

This stand is very variable, it is made up by 6 to 8 different covertypes. They are all too small to separate out and all of them are mature and should be managed the same. Old next step comments:

Cut all trees greater than 3" inches; except mark to leave some spruce and cedar seed trees/clumps in the areas of the stand that do not have sphagnum moss. In addition, leave the dense patch of hemlock in the western part of the stand, the dense patch of cedar in the northeastern part of the stand, and the dense patch of cedar in the northwestern corner of the stand. A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200.

Cold Water LakeSCA

A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.

some low pockets.

38 6120 - Lowland Cedar Sawtimber Medium

9.0 135 171-200 Mature high quality cedar stand growing on the transition zone. Over the last few years a 1 to 2 acre pocket in the center of the

stand has blown over. These trees have also have caused small pockets of other trees on the edge of the blow down to

have a significant lean. It is just a matter of time before there is more wind thrown trees. The cedar is very shallowly rooted.

There is already high volume on the ground and leaning. This should be salvaged along with the clumps that are leaning

already.

42 4130 - Aspen Sapling Well 44.1 12 Immature Stand was clearcut in 2003 on contract 036-02-01. Fully stocked aspen stand, with the open areas filling in with balsam

43 4319 - Mixed Upland Forest

Sawtimber Well

46.4 102 81-110 This stand is a compilation of many different cover types, but they are each so small that it isn't practical to separate them

out. This stand is a buffer to the Big Cedar River.

51 4139 - Aspen, Mixed Deciduous

Sawtimber Well

254.0 53 81-110 This stand is primarily a mature aspen stand with some dense pockets of red maple mixed in. Most of the aspen is good

quality, but along the southern third of the stand the soils are sandy and are not productive aspen soils. These areas will be

converted to red pine following harvest. A 100' buffer along Devil's Creek will be left.
