Timber management, wildlife habitat and recreation. Maintain the existing mixtures of forest cover types and enhance age class diversity through continued timber harvest and cultivation treatments.
Level to rolling sandy outwash plains (Danaher Plains).
The compartment is a solid block of state owned land surrounded by state owned land on the west, south and east. Corporate and non-industrial private lands border the compartment to the north. The compartment has primarily been managed for timber production, wildlife and recreation. The area is heavily used for blueberry picking.
None known at this time.
None.
Fisheries Values: NoneFisheries Concerns: A small drainage in the southeast corner of the compartment is labeled as a High Priority Trout stream. After investigating with the stand examiner it was determined that this section of High Priority Trout stream is marked in error and not a stream channel at all. Even under the highest of levels of runoff and water levels, this area would not experience flowing surface water. The stand examiner is working to have this error corrected to show accuracy in the layer. No other waterbodies exist in this compartment so Fisheries has no concerns at this time.
Compartment 94 lies in the Grand Marais Sandy End Moraine and Outwash ecological sub-subsection and is part of the Danaher plains opening-pine complex. The compartment is in the Danaher-Kingston Management Area and eastern bluebird, Kirtland’s warbler, red crossbill, sharp-tailed grouse, spruce grouse and sandpiper are featured species. Pre-settlement maps indicate that the area was composed of white pine-red pine forest and white pine-mixed hardwood forest. Currently, the area is predominately herbaceous openings and jack and red pine plantations, with some inclusions of aspen. Aspen is more predominate in the northern part of the compartment.
In this pine dominated landscape, retaining a variety of age and size classes and maintaining as much structural diversity as possible in managed stands will be important to achieving wildlife objectives. Retaining soft and hard mast producing species and uncommon species in harvests will provide food sources, nest and den trees, suitable raptor nest trees, and improve stand diversity. Large opening complexes will be maintained for the benefit of those species which use them. Wildlife species potentially using this compartment include white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, black bear, coyote, sharp-tailed grouse and Kirtland’s warbler.
Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Ordovician Collingwood and Utica shales and the Trenton and Black River formations subcrop below the glacial drift. The Trenton and Black River are quarried for limestone/dolomite in the UP.

Additional Compartment Information:
There are no gravel pits in the area, but there may be some potential. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP.
Primary access to the compartment is County Road 421 and/or County Road 422. They are routinely maintained by Luce County Road Commission during the summer months. The Danaher Plains Road is another way to access the compartment from the west. There are several sandy tow tracks throughout the compartment.
none
Recreational facilities include snowmobile and ORV trails. Hunting, wildlife viewing, camping and blueberry picking opportunities also exist within the compartment.
The compartment has a good road system for suppression activities. Large fire potential is high in this area because of the jack pine fuel type. Scattered large openings may assist in suppression, but still allow fires to have very high rates of spread. Response time to this area is moderate to high. Private property surrounding the compartment could be at risk to damage from a wildfire. There has been prescribed burns in and near this compartment.
The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details
The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system

A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity.
