Vegetation management in the Upper Muskegon management area (MA) will provide forest products; maintain or enhance wildlife habitat; protect areas of unique threatened, endangered and special concern species; and provide for forest-based recreational uses. Timber management for this 10-year period will focus on harvesting older jack pine and balancing age class distributions of oak, aspen and red pine. Expected trends within this 10-year planning period are the need to manage exotic species (especially Phragmites and glossy buckthorn), the need to continue to manage cover types for a balanced age-class distribution and an expected increase in recreation pressure.

Compartment is mostly rolling terrain consisting of upland ridges interspersed withlower swales. Soils are a mixture of Rifle peat, Greenwood peat, and Houghton Muck in the lower swales and Rubicon sand, Grayling sand, Saugatuck sand, and Newton loamy sand in the more upland areas.

This compartment is entirely state land and is mostly surrounded by state land. Private property in the area includes permanent and seasonal homes on small lots and small acreages, seasonal cabins on larger acreages, and large vacant acreages..

Ram's Head Lady Slipper and Secretive Locust.

None known or detected during fieldwork.

None

The North Branch of Denton Creek runs through section 17. Numerous beaver floodings with associated wetlands are present on this creek. Lake James and Shadow Lake are 1/2 mile SW of the compartment. The NE portion of the compartment is part of Backus Lake Flooding.

Maintain ecosystem diversity in the compartment via habitat manipulation to benefit game species such as deer, grouse, rabbits, turkeys, bear, and bobcat as well as other non-game species.

Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Pennsylvanian Grand River and Saginaw formations. The Saginaw is quarried for brick making clay elsewhere in the state. Additional Compartment Information:

county roads, and forest two-tracks. Access to the wetter portions of the compartment is poor at best due to the terrain.

None necessary at this time.

A portion of the Denton Creek snowmobile trail and ORV route skirts the southern edge of the compartment and the compartment is heavily used for hunting and other recreational pursuits. If harvest activities occur during the snowmobile season of December 1 thru March 31 a snow bed must be preserved on Designated Snowmobile Trails. Ensure logging activity does not obliterate the designated trails by limiting the number of crossings. All stumps within 20 feet of the trail shall be Flush-Cut as much as possible to ensure stumps do not result in unsafe conditions. Assure ‘logging ahead’ warning signs are placed on the designated trails and snowmobile trails during logging activity.

In general, fire protection should not be a problem in this compartment due to thecombination of fuels and terrain, proximity to fire suppression forces, and the presence of many natural and man-made fuel breaks.

Proposed treatments for this year-of-entry include 65 acres of final harvests for aspen management, 75 acres of seed tree cuts for oak management, and 26 acres of opening maintenance.

19 4130 - Aspen Sapling Well 14.9 17 Immature cut and regenerated to aspen in 1998, mostly A3 but there are a few spots that are sparser (O2A1), scattered WP poles from cut

also

20 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Sapling Well 50.5 17 Immature OPIC - FMD: CUT 1998, LEFT RP FOR SEED SOURCE AND DIVERSITY, good regeneration of aspen/RM/JP/Oak, some

areas heavy to RM3 and others are A3, R/W pine poles and SL scattered thru-out stand, hardwoods and jack pine should be

pole-size next YOE

21 4122 - Oak, Pine Sawtimber Medium

11.6 96 1-50 Shelterwood cut in JAN/FEB 2010, left well crowned oak and all red/white pine, good understory of oak/A/RM/WP, stand should be held until next YOE before treating again in order for the u/s

to become more established

23 4126 - White, Black, N. Pin Oak

Sawtimber Poor

19.4 94 1-50 Thinned/Shelter-wood cut in 1999, poor to decent quality red/black/white oak SL's with scattered R/W pine poles/SL's,

understory is O/A/M saplings with scattered R/W pine saplings, seedling oak is 5-10', stump sprout oak is 10-20'

24 6128 - Lowland Coniferous, Mixed

Deciduous

Poletimber Well

21.0 84 81-110 hummocky wet ground, lowland hardwoods converting to swamp conifers, gaps are full of balsam fir saplings, interior is mostly swamp conifers and the edges are mix of lowland hardwoods

and swamp conifers

25 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Sawtimber Well

22.5 95 51-80 upland stand surrounded by swamp and marsh, poor access for a commercial cut, stand is mature and over-mature oak with a mix of species being younger, terrain is variable with several

pockets of wetter ground around bogs or tag alder swales, edges grade into surrounding wetter stands, pockets of heavy pine in

spots, if access can be gained, cut everything but oak and pine using 4" spec. OR cut everything but WO and R/W pine and

mark up to 1 black oak per acre.

26 4123 - Red Oak Sawtimber Medium

5.2 94 81-110 uncut portion of Stand #14, left part on north edge of M-5 and west of Mud Lake Road as buffer for retention and visual

27 6127 - Lowland Pine Sawtimber Well

9.4 95 141-170 stand has a high water table, Tawas-Lupton muck and Dawson-Loxley peat soils mixed with inclusions of Au Gres-Kinross-

Croswell complex. may be operable in spots during frozen or dry conditions but there are some spots with standing water now, SL R/W pine with pole-size black spruce, fairly unique stand for the Roscommon Management Unit, thinning may cause widn-throw due to the high water table, clear-cut may not regenerate due to

the high water table

28 4130 - Aspen Sapling Well 39.1 27 Immature mix of QA, BTA, RM, and oak with a few of the lower/wetter areas having inclusions of J3J6, also some aeas heavy to R/W

pine, largest aspen and stump spout oak is almost pole-size, will be A6 next YOE

29 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Poletimber Well

7.0 60 81-110 upland terrain with SL oak and RP and P-L BTA/RM, scattered WP/BF saplings with heavy RM saplings in spots, aspen is

younger than the oak and pine (approx. 1960 YOO), no access to this stand except thru ST #28 which is A3/A6, recommend

holding this stand until Stand #28 is treated, good stand to leave for wildlife right now

30 4124 - Red with White Oak

Sawtimber Poor

28.9 89 1-50 shelterwood cut in 2008 leaving good oak mast trees and all R/W pine, good understory equally distributed between oak/red maple/aspen, red maple and aspen saplings are growing well and oak is both stump sprout and seedling source, should be close to fully stocked next YOE, oak grades to black oak from red oak north to south and south end has more R/W pine, hold

10 years for regeneration to become more established

31 4124 - Red with White Oak

Sawtimber Medium

48.3 89 51-80 Shelterwood cut in 1998 by removing aspen and red maple, ranges from O9O1 to O7A3, should be fully stocked next YOE

32 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Sawtimber Well

21.7 84 81-110 Very variable stand, mix of oak, aspen, red maple, and pine; oak ranges from poor to decent quality, some areas are heavy to jack pine poles and others are heavy to aspen poles, aspen and jack pine is poor quality, some areas with oak saplings starting in the understory, other areas heavy to RM saplings, scattered areas

heavy to R/W pine poles and saplings, terrain is upland intermixed with lower pockets

33 6119 - Mixed Lowland Deciduous Forest

Poletimber Well

6.9 95 81-110 hummocky ground and probably not operable for a commercial cut except in limited areas on the edge which are drier, also, aspen may not regenerate due to the age of the stand, red maple appears to be mostly younger bur there are a few

scattered mature red maple, lots of BF saplings in u.s. and if left alone stand will convert to swamp conifers, south and middle

part of the stand are wetter with cedar and other swamp conifers, possibly just dip into this stand if stands to the east and west are

treated

35 6120 - Lowland Cedar Poletimber Well

12.2 95 81-110 wet forested stand, mostly cedar with other swamp conifers

36 42121 - Planted Jack Pine, Mixed Deciduous

Sapling Well 1.7 18 Immature planted J3, regenerated with stand to the west (St#34 Compt 71105)

37 4131 - Aspen, Oak Poletimber Well

78.1 49 Unspecified A6 stand with parts heavy to W3, scattered pole-SL-XL conifers, cut part or all to balance age class distribution - cut north of SMT

if only part is cut

38 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Sawtimber Well

7.9 95 81-110 oak/pine stand adjacent to N. Branch of Denton Creek, oak and pine doing oak but oak is mature, aspen-red maple-jack pine are

younger and scattered thru-out stand, neck between the north and south parts is heavier to white pine (W8W5W3) and could be left as retention, buffer along creek drainage, recommend

shelter-wood by marking 30-50 SF/Acre to leave of oak (especially white oak) and leave all R/W pine

40 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Sawtimber Well

15.5 50 51-80 Upland mix of oak SL's and Aspen/Red Maple poles, aspen and red maple are younger than the oak, black oak is declining and

starting to fall apart but the white oak is looking okay so far, stand has numerous areas of advanced oak saplings, stand is

cut in 1/2 by a small /narrow drainage which will need to be crossed, recommend final harvesting to 4" spec. and leaving all

red/white pine and all white oak to maintain stand as a aspen/oak/pine mix, possibly mark up to 1 well-crowned black

oak per acre also

41 4139 - Aspen, Mixed Deciduous

Sawtimber Medium

1.7 95 1-50 island surrounded by marsh, no access

42 6119 - Mixed Lowland Deciduous Forest

Sapling Medium

3.7 19 Immature non-commercial cut over the course of 1991 -1996 for emergency deer feed, no access due to wet terrain

43 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Sawtimber Well

7.4 94 111-140 Stand was left as a buffer for cut to the west and south and consists of a mix of oak, pine, aspen, and red maple; aspen/jJP are over-mature as is most of the oak, spots are oak/pine while others are aspen/RM, aspen is slightly younger than the oak but not by much, jack pine is around 60-70 years old, stand would probably regenerate to aspen with a few bare spots if clear-cut

during the dormant season to maximize aspen sprouting

44 4139 - Aspen, Mixed Deciduous

Poletimber Well

2.3 53 Unspecified Poor access to this stand, would have to freeze a road or use crane mats to cross _____ of "L" type, small stand with low

volumes

46 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Sapling Medium

7.4 17 Immature mix of aspen, red maple, and oak; fairly sparse in spots, has low ground/higher water table in spots, mostly slow growing, cut with

stand #20 but did not leave R/W pine residual, could consider planting to jack pine after roller-chopping but will do OK if we just

let it go and cut it at rotation age

48 6124 - Lowland Spruce-Fir

Poletimber Well

11.1 94 81-110 wet cedar swamp with a few scattered hardwoods

49 6129 - Mixed Coniferous Lowland

Forest

Poletimber Well

53.8 94 81-110 wet conifer swamp, starting to break up in spots

52 61199 - Lowland Hardwood (OI)

Sapling Medium

2.1 49 Unspecified OPIC - FMD: HABITAT CUT IN 1994, EVEN MIX OF FIR/WP/A/RM, SLOW GROWING BUT GOOD COVER FOR

WILDLIFE

53 42140 - Planted Mixed Pine

Poletimber Well

4.2 25 Immature Stand regenerated with the stand to the west in 1990, planted RP mixed with planted and natural jack pine, also scattered

hardwoods, fairly short height-wise still but just reaching pole size, some pats fairly sparse but overall still fully stocked

54 4130 - Aspen Sapling Well 3.7 17 Immature Cut and regenerated with stand#77 in 1998, good stocking of A3 mixed with oak and red maple

56 4133 - Aspen, Mixed Pine

Sapling Well 8.8 27 Immature upland surrounded by "L" on 3 sides, most of the stand except for the south part was cut with Stand #11 in 1988, RP was left

when stand was cut so now it is mostly and A3 but with a super-canopy of RP XL's, stand will be A6R7 next YOE, east part of

this stand grades into lower ground with lots of RM poles

60 4319 - Mixed Upland Forest

Sawtimber Well

1.8 95 81-110 small peninsula of high ground surrounded on three sides by swamp, oak SL with black spruce poles, understory ranges from saplings to pole size; small acreage, limited volumes, high value

for visual, and no spot large enough for a landing

63 6128 - Lowland Coniferous, Mixed

Deciduous

Poletimber Well

17.1 95 81-110 cedar /balsam fir swamp with scattered hardwoods, wet with standing water is spots

65 6129 - Mixed Coniferous Lowland

Forest

Poletimber Well

9.8 94 81-110 swamp conifers with heavy tag alder under-story, wet terrain and very slow growing

66 4139 - Aspen, Mixed Deciduous

Poletimber Well

6.4 37 Unspecified Aspen stand regenerated in 1978, mix of aspen, red maple, and oak, middle of the stand has a wet pothole with tag alder and

RM/WP, parts of the stand have oak SL where they left oak mast trees

75 4125 - Black, N. Pin Oak Sawtimber Well

27.5 89 81-110 decent quality black and white oak with some red oak, mixed with some scattered red maple and small clones of TA which are just merchantable, scattered R/W pine poles also, oaks saplings started in more open areas, lots of camping areas in this stand; recommend a shelter-wood cut removing aspen and red maple

and unmarked oak, leave all R/W pine

77 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Sapling Medium

10.4 17 Immature Cut and regenerated in 1998, farily equal mix of aspen, red maple, and oak; should be fully stocked next YOE

78 4139 - Aspen, Mixed Deciduous

Sapling Poor 3.9 7 Immature Cut and regenerated in 2008, not great regeneration but should be fully stocked by next YOE, if not fully stocked in 2027,

consider planting to jack pine, stand is a mix of aspen and red maple with scattered oak and pine, left all white oak and some

red oak and white pine when cut,

79 6128 - Lowland Coniferous, Mixed

Deciduous

Poletimber Well

35.0 94 81-110 wet conifer swamp, mostly swamp conifers

80 4310 - Pine, Oak Mix Sawtimber Well

2.1 94 81-110 Stand was left as a buffer for the cut to the west in 71105, now stand is converting to an oak and red maple stand, stand is too small to bother with commercially, Wildlife Division suggested in 2007 YOE not to treat this stand and let it convert naturally, FRD

still concurs with this proposal

81 6119 - Mixed Lowland Deciduous Forest

Poletimber Medium

14.1 95 81-110 stand is marginally more upland than surrounding stands which are "E" or "L", no access without a major road project across wet

terrain, water table close to the surface in most of the stand, scattered pockets of "L" and wetter spots with "Q" types within

stand, hummocky ground, soils are poorly to moderately drained sands and the KOTAR classification is PArVCo (north end) and PArVHA (south end), stand is just at SL size, lots of wildlife sign

82 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Sawtimber Well

12.5 94 81-110 mature decent quality R/W oak SL's and mature BTA SL's with RM poles, heavy understory of WP especially on the south 1/2 of the stand, east edge grades into swamp conifers and red maple

where there is a narrow drainage between Stands 49 and 79, hold and manage for white pine at some future YOE

83 42260 - Natural Pine, Mixed Deciduous

Poletimber Well

6.7 84 171-200 long narrow W6 stand with north central arm of W9, transition zone of pine along creek, scattered oak logs and XL's with

scattered R?W pine XL's also, west end is more O7W3 east end is more W6A5O7, maintain as a buffer on the marsh along

Denton Creek

84 42290 - Natural Mixed Pine

Poletimber Well

5.3 51 141-170 stand just reaching log size and growing well, mix of white pine and red pine with scattered hardwoods and jack pine, going towards all-aged as there are some older white and red pine XL's and younger white pine coming in underneath as well

(almost pole size), hold 10 years and thin when aspen to the east and west is harvested, maintain now for visual along the

snow trail

85 4130 - Aspen Sapling Well 13.7 7 Immature Cut and regenerated to aspen in 2008, mostly BTA which regenerated well, scattered oak SL

86 4130 - Aspen Sapling Well 6.9 16 Immature A3 regenerated in 1999 with the cut to the oak stand to the west, scattered oak logs and XL's also, stand is somewhat of a

transition zone between the upland oak and the swamp conifers with the east ede of te stand having a few low/wet areas

88 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Sapling Medium

4.4 4 1-50 Shelterwood cut in 2011 with Sand to the west in 71105, scattered/W pine and R/W oak were left, featured stand is now

the oak/red maple/aspen saplings, will be fully stocked next YOE

Sawtimber Well

4.8 84 111-140 Mostly R/W pine poles/SL's with scattered hardwoods, also scattered R/W pine XL's, stand is growing well and moving

towards all-aged but there are no distinct age classes, hold and use for visual on the SMT and thin in 10 years with Stand #84

95 6119 - Mixed Lowland Deciduous Forest

Poletimber Well

6.9 49 Unspecified Q/E or P-type depending on the wetness of the terrain, somewhat of a natural broad drainage with lots of standing water in the hummocks, wettest spots are tag alder understory and the

rest is balsam fir saplings, the north east corner is heavy to aspen and the rest is more Q or E- type

97 4191 - Mixed Upland Deciduous with Conifer

Poletimber Well

7.7 49 51-80 aspen plus a mix of everything else, grades from upland to lowland, stand is cut in half by a drainage between St#2 and #47, cut or hold as desired, if cut - mark oak/pine to leave for

diversity/mast and buffer "G" and any low/wet areas

98 4199 - Other Mixed Upland Deciduous

Poletimber Well

7.0 49 51-80 stand surrounds a "G" stand and is in turn surrounded by "L" and "Q" types, upland grading to lower ground as one goes south, water table is close to the surface in much of the stand, stand

consists of red maple and white birch poles and SL with balsam fir poles, BF saps in the understory thru-out stand, good stand to

leave alone for now, lots of wildlife sign in stand
