Comparison of two music videos

The first video I have chosen is the We Found Love Video

by Rihanna. She varies in her style of music, but it is mostly R&B, Hip

Hop and Pop. She has a wide audience of people who enjoy her music

I think that this song in particular, looking at the video, there is lots

going on and attracts more of a younger adult audience.

The song is a fast up beat song and the video matches this, it’s fast

and there’s a lot to watch. The video tells a story, it matches the lyrics

and is quite narrative in this sense.

From the three main types of music videos (performance, narrative and

concept) it doesn’t just come under one of these categories. We see

Rihanna performing and see her singing at times too, as I said it tells a

story and also includes concept, with lots of effects and editing done.

The costume in the video matches the style of video. They both wearDoc Martins and denim jackets to give them a particular image, and thesmoking and drinking matches the way the makeup has been done andthe style of clothing they’re wearing.

There isn’t just one style of camera angles and settings that is used.Due to the song being fast the shots are all different and all over theplace flicking from one to the other all very swiftly. It never stays just onone shot for a very long time apart from at the beginning when it is slowwhen she is talking quietly.

Rihanna, just like most other artists has her own motifs. Rihanna’sstyle, her tattoos, her forever changing hair style, her ‘rock chick’ look

isher particular style. This are the features which represent her.

The next music video I have chosen to analyse is Lego House by EdSheeran. He is famous for his acoustic music, therefore his songs areall very calm and very often have meanings to them.In this video it follows his whilst singing, it is mainly based on hisperformance, as it watches him the whole time. But of course at thesame time is narrative and telling a story which matches the lyrics tothe song.

Ed Sheeran does not spend a great deal on costume and makeup. Hedoesn’t really have any specific ‘motifs’ but to him one thing thateveryone knows him by is his messy ginger hair and his lazy, scruffysort of look.
