INTRODUCTION (PARAGRAPH 1)

In the novel “Flipped” by Wendelin Van Draanen, Julianna and Bryce are very different characters. Julianna possesses many positive characteristics that make her likeable to readers. Bryce, on the other hand, is often disliked by readers due to certain negative traits. The purpose of this essay is to contrast Julianna and Bryce in terms of their personalities, their relationships with their families, and their treatment of each other.

BODY (PARAGRAPH 2)

Julianna has many qualities that make her stand out as a great person and character. First of all, her personality is fantastic. Julianna is both friendly and brave. When Bryce moves onto her street, she immediately tries to befriend him and even offers to help the Loskis unpack. From the time she is very young, she climbs the sycamore tree, going higher and higher each time. Juli also takes a stand against grown men when the sycamore tree is going to be cut down. Furthermore, Julianna has a wonderful relationship with her family. The Bakers are very loving and supportive toward one another and Juli seems to be very close to her parents, especially her father. She sits with him when he paints, talking to him and confiding in him about Bryce and her sycamore tree. She also talks to her mother about Bryce, proving that Julianna is close to her as well. Finally, Julianna treats Bryce much better than he treats her. She tries to be his friend even after he avoids her. She helps him with his spelling test and gives his family free eggs from her chicken coop. Julianna also feels bad when she does not accept Bryce’s apology for throwing out her eggs, even though she has a right to be angry. Clearly, Julianna is not just a wonderful person, but also a character that readers enjoy getting to know.

BODY (PARAGRAPH 3)

Bryce, unlike Julianna, is portrayed as a negative person and character for most of the novel. For example, his personality is not a flattering one. Bryce is especially unkind and cowardly. When Julianna first tries to be his friend, Bryce avoids her on purpose by making up excuses and hiding in his house. When Mr. Loski orders Bryce to ask Juli a question about her chickens, Bryce is afraid to do so. He also throws out Juli’s eggs rather than tell her that his family does not want them. In addition, Bryce does not have a close relationship with his family. The Loskis are very distant and unsupportive of one another. His relationship with his father is particularly bad. Bryce’s father passes on his negative attitude to his son and even helps him avoid Juli’s friendship. Mr. Loski accuses Bryce of being a coward and orders him to find out if Juli has a rooster even though Bryce does not want to do this. Finally, Bryce mistreats Juli even though Juli is always so kind to him. He ignores Juli at all times and takes advantage of her help in school. He does not support her with the sycamore tree and even throws out her eggs for two years. Bryce also allows Garrett to make fun of Juli when he learns about her Uncle David, which is especially hurtful. As you can see, Bryce has many qualities that characterize him as a negative person and, at times, readers find it very hard to like him.

CONCLUSION (PARAGRAPH 4)

In her novel “Flipped”, Wendelin Van Draanen created two very different characters, Julianna and Bryce. As readers get to know each character, they learn a lot about their personalities, how they interact with their families, and how they treat each other. Julianna is portrayed in a much more positive manner than Bryce, so it is no surprise that she is preferred by many readers. The contrast created by the author between the two main characters, however, is perhaps why the novel is such an interesting read.

BODY (PARAGRAPH 2)

To begin, Julianna and Bryce have very different personalities. Julianna, for example, has a fantastic personality. She is both friendly and brave. When Mr. Loski orders Bryce to ask Juli a question about her chickens, Bryce is afraid to do so. He also throws out Juli’s eggs rather than tell her that his family does not want them. Clearly, Juli has a pleasant personality while Bryce has an unpleasant one.

BODY (PARAGRAPH 3)

Furthermore, Julianna and Bryce have dissimilar relationships with their families. Julianna, for instance, has a wonderful relationship with her family. Mr. Loski accuses Bryce of being a coward and orders him to find out if Juli has a rooster even though Bryce does not want to do this. As you can see, Juli’s relationship with her family is much better than Bryce’s relationship with his family.

BODY (PARAGRAPH 4)

Finally, Julianna and Bryce are quite opposite in how they treat each other. Namely, Julianna treats Bryce much better than he treats her. She tries to be his friend even after he avoids her. She helps him with his spelling test and gives his family free eggs from her chicken coop. Julianna also feels bad when she does not accept Bryce’s apology for throwing out her eggs, even though she has a right to be angry. On the contrary, Bryce mistreats Juli even though Juli is always so kind to him. He ignores Juli at all times and takes advantage of her help in school. He does not support her with the sycamore tree and even throws out her eggs for two years. Bryce also allows Garrett to make fun of Juli when he learns about her Uncle David, which is especially hurtful. On the whole, Juli treats Bryce very nicely whereas he is quite unkind to her.
