Cris HernandezEnglish 100MorrisNovember 18, 2014Compare and ContrastBeing bilingual in society is sometimes look down upon, we see how people discriminate others for the way they speak either because their first language was not English. People always try to find excuses to discriminate people either because of them being girls or the way they speak. In most cases it turns to people being embarrassed about their own parents because of the way they speak. In the essay by Sandra Cisneros The Only daughter she describes how her siblings would discriminated her for being a girl and they did not want to play with her. This comes to show how people discriminate all around for different things. In Mother Tongue, Tan writes about the awareness and discrimination about broken English compared to Standard English. In Tans essay she quotes her mothers speech to demonstrate her mothers broken English, it was a very trivial story but the thing that is worth looking at was her mother's grammar. The quoted parts were filled with grammatical mistakes and the text was quite confusing. Yet, according to Tan You should know that my mothers expressive command of English shows how much she actually understands In other words, her mother had better command in English than all that was evidently showed in her story. She could read very sophisticated and high level documents without much difficulty. Tan demonstrates, She reads the Forbes report, listens to Wall Street Week, converses daily with her stockbroker, reads all of Shirley MacLaines books with ease - all kinds of things I cant begin to understand However, some of Tan's friends confessed that her mother language was not very comprehensive because most of them could only get 50% or less of what Tan's mother was trying to say.Through his essay Public and Private Language, Richard Rodriguez describes how from an early age he recognized his public and private identities as separate. His home was a more private world than the homes of his English-speaking peers since his family members were able to bond over their feelings of estrangement and the Spanish language they shared. Further, Rodriguez recognized his public identity at an early age, since he was more self-conscious when he spoke English, both because it was an unfamiliar language with unfamiliar sounds and because when he spoke English, there was always an audience. As his ability to speak English rose, so did his confidence in his public identity. The story "Only Daughter" by Sandra Cisneros is about being the only daughter out of seven children. The author tells us how she sometimes felt left out because her father would always tell everyone he was the father of seven sons, not because he had seven sons but because thats how it would sound like in Spanish. She also felt left out because none of her six brothers would play with her because they didn't want to be seen playing with a girl. As they grew up all seven of them went to college and had impressive careers. The author's father would praise his sons for being doctors but was disappointed when his daughter graduated from college without a husband. The author's father was glad she had received an education but always expected her to be married and have her own family. To know her father's expectations of her the author was glad that her father never gave her a hard time about her decision to major in English, even though she would have liked for him to ask her what she was writing every once in a while. The author wanted to make her father proud of her. She made him proud by one day sharing a book that she had written and it made her happy when he asked where he could get a copy of her book for the relatives. From all the essays you can see how discrimination was happening to the point where even their own family was ashamed about the way they were, from Sandras siblings not wanting to hang out with her because of her being a girl to Rodriguez being ashamed of his English speaking. There are occasions in which people just take everything and worry too much about the way they look, who they are, and the way they speak but that is not something that should matter. The essays shows how Tans mother had a difficult time speaking English and that comes to show how people discriminate just simply because their first language wasnt English. Rodriguez knows how he is ashamed of speaking English because hes self-conscious because of the way he speaks English.
