COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE

We use comparative and superlative adjectives to compare two or more nouns.

The formation of the comparative and superlative depends on the number of syllables in the adjective

ONE-SYLLABLE OR TWO-SYLLABLE ENDING IN -Y:To form the comparative, we add -er to the end of the adjective.

Happy Happier than The happiest

Long Longer than The longest

Small Smaller than The smallest

Big Bigger than The biggest

To form the superlative, we add -est to the end of the adjective. (general rule)

The pig is smaller than the rat.The ox is the kindest.

TWO-SYLLABLE NOT ENDING WITH -Y AND MORE THAN TWO-SYLLABLE

The rat is more intelligent than the cat. The rat is the most intelligent

The rooster is more nervous than the horse. The rooster is the most nervous.

The ox is more headstrong than the monkey. The ox is the most headstrong.

Comparative Of EqualityWe use comparative of equality to say that two things are equal in

some way. And the structure is ...as...as...

As intelligent as a rat.As fast as a pig.As strong as tiger.
