    Sputtering target and other thin film forming materials from the Electronic

    Materials & Components Company are used in smartphones, tablet

    computers and other portable devices. For the semiconductor industry,

    we supply silicon wafers and the high purity polycrystalline silicon used to

    make the wafer, as well as peripheral materials such as oxygen-free

    5. Surge AbsorbersSurge absorbers from Mitsubishi Materials protect electronic devices from surges causedby static electricity and lightning. Ever since their release, our surge absorbers haveearned enormous trust from our customers. Previously, the absorbers were mainly used inflat screen TVs and car navigation systems. However, their usage has recently expandedto include air conditioners, refrigerators and other home appliance, LED lighting andcopy machines. Even further growth is expected in the future.

    7. Copper Anodes (balls)Several members of the Mitsubishi Materials Group are involved in the production ofvariously sized, high-purity copper anodes with excellent plating solubility.     1. Eco-Friendly NaoshimaThe Naoshima Smelter & Refinery maintains a zero-emission recycling structure. Thesmelter/refinery has for many years utilized the nonpolluting Mitsubishi Process forcopper smelting, and with its new kiln melting furnace, it is able to process various typesof waste, including sludge, circuit boards and shredder dust from automobiles and homeappliances on site. The smelter/refinery also treats fly ash generated in the wasteincinerators of other companies, both from within the Mitsubishi Materials Group andoutside the Group.

    2. Onahama Smelting & Refining's 100% Recycling SystemOnahama Smelting & Refining, a member of the Mitsubishi Materials Group, utilizes itssmelting facilities and technology to process home appliances and shredder dust, mainlyfrom old cars. The metal content is then harvested. Furthermore, heat that is generatedfrom combustible materials, such as rubber, urethane and resin, is used to generateelectricity, thus forming a "direct material thermal recycling system".

    3. Home Appliance Recycling PlantAs an ensemble of companies operating under the composite profile of a comprehensivebasic materials maker, the Mitsubishi Materials Group has earned the high regard ofhome appliance manufacturer with practical recycling technology. In joint investmentswith domestic home appliance manufacturer, we have established five recyclingoperations: Hokkaido Eco Recycle Systems Co., Ltd., East Japan Recycling SystemsCorporation, Panasonic Eco Technology Kanto Co., Ltd., Chubu Eco Technology Co.,Ltd., and Kansai Recycling Systems Co., Ltd.

    4. Can-to-Can Recycling for Aluminum CansMitsubishi Materials embraced aluminum can recycling at about the same time that theCompany entered the aluminum beverage can business. Recycling efforts have expandedthrough the cooperation of ordinary citizens and corporate citizen and many benefits havebeen achieved for all concerned. Along with several Group members, including UniversalCan, Mitsubishi Aluminum Co., Ltd., and Shinryo Aluminum Techno Co., Ltd., we haveestablished a can-to-can integrated recycling system whereby used beverage cans becomethe raw material for new aluminum cans through a repetitive cycle of production,collection, melting, casting and rolling.

    5. Processing Industrial Waste and Sewage Sludge at Cement PlantsCement production using waste as fuel and raw materials has drawn attention for tworeasons: First, it serves to reduce costs, and second, it gives new life to materials thatwould otherwise take up space in landfills. It is a model process for the recycling-oriented society. Of note, Mitsubishi Materials' Yokoze Plant and the Kyushu Plant, bothits Kanda and Kurosaki divisions, each take in more than 100 tons of sewage sludge aday. The sludge becomes a raw material for cement production, with organic componentsserving as fuel and inorganic components used in the clinker. In addition, throughcalcination, the sludge is turned into a powdery residue, limiting the release of nitrogenoxides, a cause of air pollution.

    6. Recycling Tungsten Carbide from Cemented Carbide ToolsJapan New metals Co.,Ltd., one of Mitsubishi Materials group companies produces rawmaterials for cemented carbide tools. They collect used cemented carbide tool fromcustomers and recycle to tungsten carbide powder with refining process.With a capability to smelt used cemented carbide products for recycling, Mitsubishi

    Materials is the only manufacturer in Japan to operate such business on a commercialbase.

    7. Reusing Waste Concrete AggregateThe demolition of concrete structures typically generates huge amounts of rubble. Inresponse, Mitsubishi Materials Group formulated a recycling system to recover high-quality aggregate from these concrete ruins and in December 2001 played a key role inthe establishment of a research group with several major general contractors to pursueadvanced applications of recycled concrete. The core technology of concrete recoverysystems is the heated separation method, which removes aggregate, such as sand andgravel, from waste concrete in a high-quality state. We are working to encourage greateruse of this method nationwide.

    A recycling-orinted society utilizes waste as raw materials in a different

    application to conserve the Earth's limited resources. Mitsubishi Materials

    Group has embraced this philosophy and, through various operations,

    including cement production, nonferrous metals smelting and refining, the

    energy business and aluminum beverage can manufacturing, companies

    within the Group effectively turn waste into reusable raw materials in

    respective business segments or render them harmless to the

    environment.

    These activit ies are complemented by addit ional eco-oriented

    businesses, such as home appliance recycling, which is undertaken in

    cooperation with home appliance makers.

    Meanwhile, the Naoshima Smelter & Refinery recycles valuable metals

    and joins the local community in a nationally recognized Eco Town

    project. The smelter/refinery supports the project through on-site

    processing of wastewater and molten fly ash produced by an industrial

    waste treatment facility on the neighboring island of Teshima in Kagawa

    Prefecture.

    MitsubishiBy the early 1940s, the original Mitsubishi zaibatsu (Mitsubishi Company), founded in the early 1870s,had expanded into virtually every sector of the economy, including mining, heavy industry, oil refining,chemicals, banking, real estate, insurance, even aircraft manufacture. It was the biggest most powerfulindustrial combine in pre-war Japan.Then, with the advent of World War II, everything changed. After the war, the single organization wasdissolved into scores of independent companies that were no longer subject to central control.The common misconception abroad however, is that Mitsubishi is still one giant company. This is not so.It is a collection of dozens of autonomous companies. Some of them have been around for more than acentury, while others have grown up in the last few years.

    Mitsubishi Materials CorporationMitsubishi Materials Corporation was created on December 1, 1990 by merger of Mitsubishi MetalCorporation and Mitsubishi Mining & Cement Co., Ltd., which had been established after the WorldWar by the allied breakup of the old Mitsubishi Mining Company. Mitsubishi Materials Corporationis one of the world largest materials companies, employing more than 23,000 people in 25 countries. TheCompany has built strong positions in metal smelting and refining, cement manufacturing & metalfabricating and is now regarded as a technical leader in areas such as silicon wafer, electroniccomponents and advanced materials.
