The Bubble Effect is a giant transparent bubble, which supports an aerial performer inside, purely through air pressure, requiring NO external rigging. This ground breaking, large-scale installation, has emerged from a desire to create an utterly unique experience for diverse audiences, a truly mobile aerial installation independent of any infrastructure, and to push the boundaries of interdisciplinary and installation theatre in Australia. The Bubble Effect has performed seasons at Brisbane Festival, Bleach Festival (Gold Coast), Anywhere Theatre Festival, Harvest Festival and in Brisbane’s CBD as part of the G20 Cultural Program.

The Bubble Effect’s current show Universal Disco has been created with a view to touring, and with an optional community engagement framework where local kids/adults can learn dance and circus and even be incorporated into the show.

Mid January-mid November 2022

DURATIONThe whole experience is around 30 minutes including pre and post show. The pre show character gathers and warms up the crowd, and after the show the audience is invited to dance, learn hula-hoop moves, and take photos with the performers. The show can be repeated over the evening in a festival setting, with the bubbles serving as a fascinating installation in between. The show proper is 10 minutes making the show scalable ie. it can be done without the pre and post show if desired, and we have a ground based version without the bubbles, suitable for a stage/cabaret spot or more intimate setting.

SUITABLE VENUESThe Bubble Effect is best suited to outdoors or a large hall such as a convention centre. The footprint is 16m x 10m and the large bubble has a height of 6m. This means that indoors sight lines should be considered as well as the proximity of the audience.

We encourage the appreciation of diverse strengths, abilities, body sizes and learning methods. Our workshops also promote creativity, laughter, collaboration and self-confidence. With our methods participants can achieve impressive skills and become performance ready in a short period of time. These workshops can be a stand-alone opportunity for local people to learn new skills and to promote interest in our show/the event. There is also the option of participants learning a routine that can be included in our show. The format of universal Disco is ideally suited to this possibility with the pre-show component. The crowd gathering character DJ Inferno can facilitate the performance of the community participants routine as part of the warm up to the show proper. Not only does this represent an exciting opportunity for local groups, but it also fits nicely with the shows themes of unification, celebration of diversity, and general partying!

DESCRIPTION / DETAILSSuggested time for introductory workshops is 60 minutes per discipline (can be shorter to fit with school periods). These can be followed up with an optional ‘Show Ready’ Workshop of 60 minutes for participants interested in being part of the show.

MARKETING SUMMARY

We have an exciting, high quality video teaser and many high quality still images.

The impressive and highly visual nature of the installation really sells itself and is an asset to any event, even as an installation alone.

In addition, the show has great appeal to all ages and demographics. Children are particularly captivated by the fantasy of the world we create. They often dance along copying the moves and ask many interesting questions after the show! The format of the show, which includes post show interaction with the performers, provides opportunity to engage further with the story.

FREIGHT NOTESWe will travel in a large van. The large bubble weighs 175 kilos and packs down to 1m cubed. In an outdoor setting we will ideally drive right up to our performance spot so the bubble can be rolled out - or it can be wheeled a short distance on a trolley.

CRITICAL ISSUESLighting trees need to be set up in correct position. Our set is unusual and takes a few hours to set up so we need to have communication with the AV supplier prior to the event and before lighting fixtures are set up.

Weather: cannot perform in very strong winds or in rain. In the case of intermittent rain, bubbles can be deflated and covered with tarps but we need 45 minutes to reset. If this kind of rain is expected we highly recommend using stages to prevent dampness and to minimise humidity filling the bubbles.
