We understand the South African insurance market, and all of its complexities, which is why we’re able to carefully manage our clients’ specific needs. This is one of the reasons we’ve formed and fortified strong local and international partnerships with underwriters who have Global Rating Accreditation.

Our company was established by black entrepreneurs and has significant experience in fields such as asset financing, manufacturing, energy, mining, property, construction, transport and logistics. We are proudly 100% HDI-owned, governed by Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) principles and credentials. With a passion for creating partnerships, Mmela helps to benefit both the poor, and fast track the empowerment of women (with a focus on those in rural areas), children and the disabled.

We provide Short-Term and Life Insurance solutions for individual, commercial and corporate clients, working with the AA and Netcare 911 on an on-going basis. Walking side by side with you, we engage in service conversations towards practical goals continually.

Our Business Approach

The key to our resilient business model, which is the result of our in-depth experience in both the public and private sectors, is supported by these 3 pillars which are common to all sectors requiring insurance services:

• Value, an equation balancing expertise and cost

• Risk transfer, a highly skilled exercise requiring diligence and experience to shift risk from one party to another

• Affordability, the science of marrying costs to the expectations and restraints of our clients

Mmela also actively embraces the tenets of the King III Report on Corporate Governance.

Mmela’s operational excellence programs are built on the following key pillars and components:

Management Accountability and Our Operational Excellence Vision

We strive to be the financial services company most admired for its people, processes, partnerships and performance.

We recognise that to achieve operational excellence, we must all share in our clients’ vision and business objectives, provide leadership accountability, vertically and horizontally, across the operations that build, support and nurture an operational excellence culture, and an alignment of processes to service requirements that require personal involvement and ownership across the organisation.

Resources Mobilisation, Utilisation and Customer Facing

Our people, processes and systems are all uniquely structured, designed and operationally aligned to provide our clients with an exceptionally reliable and efficient service.

Our operational excellence is not something separate from our business. It is central to how we manage and run our organisation to achieve our vision of success. Our process’s purpose, scope and objectives are well defined to deliver consistent and predictable service to our clients.

Our Operational Design and Construction

In designing our operational infrastructure for clients, Mmela takes into consideration factors such as reliability, operability, maintainability and total operations cycle cost trade-offs in making incremental cost savings for our clients. In addition, we believe in processes that actively engage our employees in customer satisfaction and the minimisation of process failure risks.

Our Processes are Continuously Improved and Their Relevance and

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

Effectiveness Regularly Measured and Verified

By regularly measuring and verifying our processes, we can confirm that the process objectives and results are being achieved, and that the critical components of the process are adequately designed and robust enough for the efficient execution of the expected service level. Thus our process procedures are also tested and continuously improved.

Change Management is Key for a Paradigm Shift in Operational Excellence

We believe in thinking out-of-the-box, to deliver cross-functional activities which create enduring value for our customers. In this way, Mmela manages to do more with less, and thus pass, on a sustainable basis, operational cost savings to our clients.

Our change management strategies reinforce a task and traditional command and control behaviour, that encourage our employees to question every aspect of our operations, whilst instilling enterprise systems thinking - for that elusive added-value to our clients’ business.

The Mmela leadership team is continuously engaged in assessments and participates in prioritisation of assessed gaps.

5. OUR APPROACH TO B-BBEE

FSP 20557

Page 16: COMPANY PROFILE - MmelaManager at Powertech Electrification and Aberdare Cables respectively (all within the Altron Group). He maintained his momentum by serving as an Executive at

Since inception, Mmela has implicitly understood the importance of transformation throughout all its operations, and within the broader society in which we operate. We continue to exceed the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) Codes of Good Practice for Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE).

We recognise that B-BBEE is a framework that redresses the exclusions and imbalances of apartheid, and is a key driver of South Africa’s continued sustainable growth.

Approach

We at Mmela employ diverse but integrated socio-economic strategies that include, but are not limited to: • Increasing the number of black people that manage, own and control enterprises and productive assets • Facilitating ownership and management of enterprises and productive assets by communities, workers, co-operatives and other collective enterprises • Developing human resources and skills • Achieving equitable representation in all occupational categories and levels in the workforce • Preferential procurement • Investment in enterprises that are owned or managed by black people

Transformation Pillars

Our transformation strategy is based on 7 fundamental pillars, which together provide a framework for comprehensively addressing transformation and empowerment throughout the group. These include: Ownership, Employment Equity, Procurement of Goods & Services, Human Resource Development, Enterprise Development, Corporate Social Investment and Equity.

Commitment to B-BBEE & Equity Goals

Mmela Financial Services embarked on a process of attaining a B-BBEE score card in recognition of the codes of good practice. The rating agency, Emex – a SANAS affiliated verification agency, rated Mmela to be a Level 1 contributor.

OUR APPROACH TO B-BBEE

OUR APPROACH TO B-BBEE

Preferential Procurement

Over the past 12 months, Mmela has engaged approximately 240 suppliers across the country, that have a B-BBEE rating. The company has supported these SMME’s by procuring goods and services in excess of R35m.

Enterprise Development

Enterprise Development serves to create wealth by providing existing, and start-up entrepreneurs, with the opportunities to grow and sustain their businesses through training, coaching and mentoring, as well as access to funding and markets.

Enterprise Development rests on 2 pillars, namely: Program Design (required to ensure that every decision, distribution and implementation activity is thought through and planned efficiently) and Program Profile (ensuring that clients can select from a variety of different enterprise development vehicles).

Success Story

LBMJ Recoveries and LBMJ Assessing were born with foresight and are both proving to be a success. Both companies now serve Mmela with distinction as far as their respective roles are concerned.

Mmela has therefore not only created jobs, affording the previously disadvantaged individuals opportunities, but it has turned into an incubator for these developed businesses. Both companies are rapidly pulling away from Mmela, and have new shareholders and new management. Though they still share the operational premises with Mmela, they have gained their independence in all respects.

Government has prioritised key initiatives around the country according to greatest need. We view these initiatives as moral obligations for which we willingly embrace responsibility. Our CSI goals make a perfect fit with the dti code of good practice for B-BBEE.

With Mmela, it’s not about compliance, it’s our way of life to support initiatives that we feel gives hope to the needy and underprivileged people, schools, old-age homes, communities, and the often forgotten members of our society.

Our philosophy is that it’s not just about providing funding, it’s about creating long-term, sustainable partnerships that can make a difference. To this extent, we have selected the following CSI initiatives that are close to our hearts:

Pay back to our hearts

Fred Habedi Primary School in Kwa-Thema, near Springs, holds special and personal meaning for the Managing Director of Mmela Financial Services – it was where he began his journey. To reciprocate and express sincere gratitude for the school’s effort in his formative years, Mmela provided new electronic learning aids in their science laboratory after they had once been robbed of this facility.

Education for the disabled

The Efata School for the Blind and Deaf in the Eastern Cape has been on cruise control with 100% pass rate for the last five years making it a worthy recipient of a R50 000 annual donation from Mmela Financial Services to take the children further.

Care when approaching journey’s end

In early August last year, Pieter Wessels home for the elderly in Nigel, a non-racial sanctuary, suffered a catastrophic fire, leaving a number of residents dead and the remainder virtually homeless. Mmela Financial Services were very proud to be numbered amongst those who rallied around this home, donating R10 000 and monitoring the process of reconstruction with a view to further assist as, and when needed.

Where Grace and Hope truly goes the distance

As with all our efforts concerning re-investment in social upliftment, the Grace and Hope School in Seshego, by catering exclusively for learners with disabilities, has been identified as having the ‘greatest need’ for our attention. Children with disabilities have massive engines in their hearts, always revved-up to prove their true potential. The alignment with Government policy has prompted us to reserve a R100 000 donation for this institution, whilst maintaining a watchful eye concerning the needs of its pupils.

All passengers on board

Mmela will never hit the brakes when it comes to uplifting the community, which is why we endeavour to donate clothing, groceries, toys and many more items to a centre called PUSH (Persevere Until Something Happens), based in Eldorado Park. This centre is an orphanage home for children with HIV/AIDS and those who are homeless. The facility houses more than 200. On the day we parked the donation in PUSH’s driveway, we were also able to celebrate all the children’s birthdays during August 2011.

Our hands – firmly on the wheel

43% of Mmela Financial Services shares are held by Mmela Rural Trust. The significance of this ‘High Court-formalised’ ownership is the forward-motion force felt by the community (with emphasis on women) of Bloedfontein, in Mpumalanga. We’ve become partners with the people of this community, establishing crèches and donating essential provisions, creating feeding schemes and initiating Early Child Learning Development and Youth Development programmes.

We Travel the Road Together

Time is the most precious commodity that any person can give. Our staff voluntarily identify projects and regularly support these important initiatives.

At Mmela, we utilise the past to better tomorrow, keeping South Africa by our side, every step of the way on the path to finding a fairer future for all.
