Inizio anni ’30. A bordo del leggendario transatlan-tico Rex i passeggeri si accomodano su poltrone di grande comfort ed eleganza. Per PFG Contract è la prima, prestigiosa commessa. L’inizio di una grande avventura che fra gli anni ’50 e ’60 porta alla realizzazione degli arredi per altre celebri navi da crociera come l’Andrea Doria, la Raffaello e la Mi-chelangelo. In questo periodo PFG Contract affina, da vero apripista negli interni per spazi collettivi, il concetto di design sartoriale. Un approccio che unisce manualità e cura artigianale a processi pro-duttivi e tecnologie su scala industriale. I risultati non si fanno attendere e ben presto arrivano nuo-ve, importanti commesse. Centinaia di hotel, bar, ristoranti, residence. Ogni volta una sfida stimolan-te. Un’occasione per esprimere la padronanza sto-rica nella falegnameria e nell’ alta ebanisteria, una maestria artigianale nella lavorazione della pelle tramandata da generazioni, una consolidata espe-rienza nella lavorazione dei tessuti, dei metalli e di ogni altro materiale. Nel corso della sua storia la Divisione viene coinvolta in ambiti sempre diversi. A partire dagli anni ’80 PFG Contract diventa il mag-giore produttore al mondo di sistemi di sedute per teatri, auditorium e sale da concerto progettati dai più grandi architetti contemporanei. Oggi la Divi-sione spazia con competenza in molteplici settori. Dallo yachting agli interni di automobili e aerei, dal retail ai musei, fino alle sedi di istituzioni gover-native e all’hospitality. Una presenza affermata nei luoghi dell’arte e della cultura, della politica e dell’im-prenditoria, dei viaggi e del lifestyle. Con la capacità di intervenire in contesti storici dalla lunga tradizione, ma anche nei progetti dell’architettura più avanzata, speri-mentale e futuribile.

Passengers made themselves comfortable on big armchairs on board the Rex, the legendary trans-atlantic ocean liner at the beginning of the 1930’s. This was the first prestigious job for PFG Contract. The start of a great adventure that soon led to orders for other famous cruise ships such as the Andrea Doria, the Raffaello and the Michelangelo. PFG Contract sharpened its sartorial skills on these projects and become a trailblazer in the concept of designing public venues. Its approach combined manual skill and expert craftsmanship with technology and in-dustrial scale production processes. It was not long before more new orders came streaming in, lead-ing to it complete assignments on hundreds of ho-tels, bars, restaurants and residences. It thrived on the stimulating challenge presented by each one. They also provided PFG Contract with the oppor-tunity to display its mastery in the art of high-end carpentry and leatherwork along with its expertise in working with fabrics, metals and all other types of materials. PFG Contract has been involved in numerous different projects over the course of its history. Starting in the 1980’s, it became the larg-est producer of theatre, auditorium and concert hall seating systems in the world as designed by leading architects. It is now involved in several dif-ferent sectors. Everything from yachts to cars and airplanes, retail shops to museums, government offices to the hospitality sector. Its products can be found in places of art and culture, politics and the business world along with the travel and life-style areas. PFG Contract’s long experience makes it highly qualified to work in historical environments but it is equally at ease with the most advanced, experi-mental and forward looking architectural projects.

Poltrona Frau Group is the largest Italian design fur-niture company by revenue. It is listed on the Milan stock exchange. The share capital which is fully subscribed and paid up, amounts to Euro 35,1 mil-lion subdivided into 140,275,159 million ordinary shares with a nominal value of Euro 0.25 each. The listing on the Italian Stock Exchange enabled the Company to gain greater visibility on both national and international reference markets, obtain easier access to the capital market and attract first-rate managerial resources with a view to continuous growth.

Il Gruppo Poltrona Frau ha due centri di produzione in Italia e uno in Cina. Le strutture produttive di Cassina si trovano a Meda, nel Nord Italia e comprendono due distinte unità, dedicate rispettivamente alla falegnameria e ai rivestimenti e tappezzeria. La superficie comples-siva è di 28.000 mq a cui si aggiungono 2.000 mq di magazzini. A Meda si trovano anche gli uffici manageriali e ope-rativi di Cassina e Cappellini, per un totale di 6.000 mq. Gli stabilimenti produttivi di Poltrona Frau hanno sede a Tolentino, in Centro Italia. La superficie com-plessiva, compresi i magazzini, è di 40.200 mq.A completare la struttura di Tolentino, gli uffici opera-tivi e manageriali di entrambi i marchi, per un totale di 6.000 mq.In Cina il Gruppo, accanto al proprio centro di produ-zione, si avvale di collaboratori in outsourcing. Una rete di partner collaudati che permette alla Divisione di essere ancora più competitiva nei costi e nei tempi.

The Poltrona Frau Group operates two production platforms, one in Italy and one in China. The Italian platform includes the Cassina produc-tion facilities with two separate units, one which provides the woodworking service, and the other which deals with coverings and upholstery. Total surface area of the production facilities amounts to 28.000 m2, with an additional 2.000 m2 of ware-house capacity. The Poltrona Frau production facilities are in Tolentino in Central Italy. These production facilities amount to 40.200 m2, including warehouse capacity. The Poltrona Frau offices are also located in Tolen-tino and occupy 6.000 m2. The Group has production facilities in China and also uses outsourced resources. A network of trust-ed partners that allows PFG Contract to be even more competitive in costs and delivery terms.

PFG Contract develops, engineers and manufac-tures all the elements that comprise an interiors project: made to measure furnishings (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment), stone and glasswork, flooring, lighting and customised finishings. It also supervises the entire project from the logistics, services and customs documentation to installation and after sales assistance.

PFG Contract sviluppa, costruisce e realizza tutti gli elementi che compongono un progetto d’in-terni: arredi su misura (FF&E), infissi, opere in pietra e vetro, pavimentazioni, illuminazione, finiture persona-lizzate. Un’attenzione che si traduce anche nella costante formazione di tutti i dipen-denti sui temi dell’eco compatibilità. PFG Contract si attiene rigorosamente alla certifi-cazione ISO 14001:2004 per la gestione ambientale e alla certificazione UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 per la ge-stione della qualità. Entrambe attestano l’adozione di accurati sistemi di controllo in ogni fase, dalla progettazione, alla produzione, all’installazione e all’assistenza ai clienti. Production cycles are optimised to avoid environmentally damaging waste and help reduce its carbon footprint. All employees regularly undergo training on envi-ronmentally friendly work methods. There are a number of different steps to the process. It starts with a consultation between the architect and the designer. This consultation sets the basis for the entire project, and provides the springboard from which the business developer launches ideas and defines the working procedures. The design engi-neer will then supervise the transition to the techni-cal and functional phases and draw up the layouts with the correct proportions and symmetries. At this point the engineers draw up the designs and provide the necessary information to put the items into pro-duction. All the material necessary is then selected or made by the technical departments. Finally, in ac-cordance with the guidelines for the project and the layout, the technicians and craft workers carry out the necessary woodwork and installation of the materials, furnishings and accessories.

Il processo prevede diverse tappe. Punto d’avvio è il dialogo con l’architetto o il designer. Un momento di confronto fondamentale, nel quale il business deve-loper lancia stimoli e idee e focalizza le modalità di lavoro. È poi il design engineer a curare il passaggio alle fasi tecniche e funzionali, definendo i layout con le corrette proporzioni e simmetrie. A questo punto, è compito degli ingegneri elaborare i disegni con le indicazioni indispensabili per la produzione. Tutti i materiali necessari vengono quindi selezio-nati o realizzati dall’ufficio tecnico della Divisione. Sulla base delle linee guida del progetto e dei la-yout, infine, tecnici e artigiani eseguono gli inter-venti di carpenteria e l’installazione di materiali, arredi e accessori.

The PFG research and design department uses ISO certified laboratories to make accurate sound and temperature varia-tion resistance tests. The service includes the installation of folding or fixed seating systems and specific furnishing elements.
