Surveying & Mapping Methodology

WS SURVERY BOATESTIMATED COMMISSIONING DATE : JUNE 2012

Bathymetric survey

All bathymetric surveys are undertaken using echo sounders.

The technique involves mounting the instru-ment on a small boat and scanning the required area. The echo sounder will be attached to a mobile GPS that locks the exact geo-coordinates as the beam scans and records the depths.

At the office, data from the GPS and the base station is used to further correct the positions and then the resulting data is transfered to the depth positions. Finally a bathymetric map is produced.Topographic Survey

Topographic Survey involves the use of total stations, auto and laser levels. The most common is the leveling surveys. Similarly, surveying existing structures on land and set-ting out of buildings and other structures are also done using high accurracy instruments. The accuracy of these surveys will be less than a millimeter and the resulting maps are produced in AutoCAD maps. These surveys are then used by designers, architects and engineers.

GIS and GPS based survey

Use of real time differential GPS allows the surveyor to undertake complex and difficult jobs quickly and most importantly, very ac-curately. The GPS base stations are fixed on site and the surveyor uses the roving unit

(GPS) to mark the boundaries, such as shore line, reef line, vegetaiton line, erosion marks, landuse and others.

The result is high accuracy GIS layers that can be used in several ways for several purposes.

Terrestrial environmental

Terrestrial environmental surveys include detail flora and faunal studies, noise assess-ments, soil and groundwater analysis. These analysis and assessments are required for EIAís, feasibility studies and other technical studies.

Coastal environment

Coastal environment is one of our speciality and includes coastal structure designs and large scale project management including beach replenishment, monitoring and detail design of coastal defence structures.

Marine Environment

Being sorounded by water, the marine envi-ronment plays a critical role in the lives of Maldivians. Marine environmental surveys and assessments are extremely important as they provide important information and data for the survival of the people.

Marine surveys include coral reef assess-ments, waves and ocean current measure-ments and profiling the oceanic environmen-tal conditions using the latest equipments and technology. Most of the projects in the Maldives have some kind of impact on the marine environmentand therefore require detail analysis before any project can be implemented.

WaterSolution’sOrganizationalChart

Project Name: Design of wastewater dispoal system for Dhidhdhoo, Felidhoo and Rasdhoo island.

Issue: Design an appropriate wastewater disposal system for the three island.

Solution: Water Solutions worked in collaboration with Lanka Hydraulics Institute for this project. Water Solutions undertook the necessary surveys and environmental assessments as well as provided technical inputs.

Challenges: Logistical difficulties combined with the stress of meeting the tight deadline was the biggest challenge to the team. Some of the islands also posed practical difficulties in mapping such as harsh coastlines, strong waves, thick vegetation that made GPS useless at times and transport difficulties.

Project Name: Topographic and bathymetric survey of Herathere, Addu atoll.

Issue: In 2005, the island of Herathere in Seenu atoll was required to be surveyed as the island was selected to develop a resort.

Solution: Water Solutions undertook the topographical and bathymetric survey that was to become the basis for the resort development as there was no previous surveyed maps.

Challenges: The biggest challenge in this project was lack of any previous maps or materials, rugged nature of the island, the huge size and surveying the ponds. The team also had to face difficulty carrying out the bathymetric survey as the lagoon was too shallow for any boat access.

Project Name: Deployment of ADCP in 3 islands (Muli, Funadhoo & Eydhafushi

Issue: Install the ADCP to measure currents.

Solution: Gathered an experienced team of divers to do the job including inhouse divers.

Challenges: Strong currents prevented smooth deployment of the tripod support base at 18 meters, which weigh 40 kg above water. Fixing it on the steep reef slope was a more tough excercise. In addition, lack of diving equipment availability in these islands were logistically challenging as all equipments had to be transported from Male’.

Project Name: Topographical survey of 14 inhabited islands of Baa atoll.

Issue: Under the AEC project, all the inhabited islands of Baa atoll were to be surveyed including topography and land use.

Solution: Water Solutions undertook this survey in the specified time period. The biggest challenge was keeping up with the deadline and logistical difficulties. Neverthless, the survey was completed on time. Two teams work simultaneously starting from early morning and sometimes at night to complete the project on time.

Challenges: Logistical difficulties combined with the stress of meeting the tight deadline was the biggest challenge to the team. Some of the islands also posed practical difficulties in mapping such as harsh coastlines, strong waves, thick vegetation that made GPS useless at times and transport difficulties.

Project Name: Coastal protection of Alidhoo

Issue: Design a breakwater to protect the water villas in north-east monsoon and a create a mooring area for boats.

Solution: Water Solutions provided a turn key project including designing a 500 meter long breakwater, a mooring area and undertaking the civil works and managed the project.

Challenges: Logistical difficulties combined with the stress of meeting the tight deadline was a significant challenge to the team. Notably, importation of 18000 tons of rock boulders from India on time was the most critical component as the entire project depended on this. Neverthless, the project was completed in 5 months.

Project Name: EIA and Coastal protection of Chaaya Island, Dhonveli, North Male’ atoll.

Issue: The island’s beach and the coastline needed stabilization in order to retain the beach throughout the year. This was a challenge for the management as a result of the previous dredging works that had been undertaken.

Solution: Water Solutions undertook a monitoring programme and designed coastal defence structures that would help retain the beach and control the sand movement. The project was completed in 2007 and the whole project from the initial assessment, surveys, EIA and project management were undertaken by Water Solutions.

Challenges: The biggest challenge was the tight deadline and the fact that the work was undertaken while keeping the resort operational.
